Pennhurst State School and Hospital was a state-run institution for mentally and physically disabled individuals of Southeastern Pennsylvania. After 79 years of controversy, it was closed on December 9th, 1987 because of its long history of being understaffed, dirty and violent.

I've worked with folks who lived in a place like that in their youth. The trauma that they live with more significantly affects their daily life than their disabilities does.
My younger brother is mentally disabled, so happy he got to grow up at home with me. This breaks my heart.
They education on that wasn't around then . Only thing they had was electric
Me too. It’s even more painful when you have a family member or child with a mental disorder. I’m just grateful that they are alive in this day and age where there is more education on it.

I have a disabled son and it's kills my heart knowing if he was born in those times he would have been mistreated.. I feel for all those 'inpatients' who called pennhurst their home

@@michaelmayo-vb5fl im not saying they didn't but mental disability was so frowned upon and so much abuse was rife not saying abuse doesn't happen today but at least many understand what mental disability entails now. And they are not just chucked in an asylum

@@rebeccaaldridge8114 Just remember that it was often the families (parents/caregivers) of the disabled patients that often had them admitted. Yes, many of them were pressured by doctors and other authoritarian figures at the time to do it because they'd scare the families into believing that they "weren't cut out to provide that kind of care" to their disabled family members... but just as many willingly had them admitted because they had no desire to care for their disabled family member. They were thought of as a drain emotionally and financially, the families were "embarrassed" for not having a "normal" family member, so they had them locked away so they could continue on as normal and wash their hands of the whole affair.

I've been in the paranormal field for almost 30yrs so I've been to some of the most haunted places in America. In all my years investigating hauntings, some residential, some abonded, and others being in hospitals, asylums, prisons etc theres absolutely NOTHING that compares to Pennhurst. This is not a place for the faint of heart, the timid, or easily scared because these spirits will definitely feed off of that and truly give you an experience you'll never forget! Pennhurst & Wavely Hills are hands down my favorite locations to investigate because they have never let me down!
I’d love to investigate both places
I have been in the paranormal field for over a decade and by far my worst was a place in Maryland Glenn Dale Hospital. It is the only place that I have EVER had my team leave an investigation do to injury and fear for more injuries. While on an investigation my partner and I (both lead investigators and founders of the team and neither green by any stretch at this point) walk into 2 rooms side by side. One per room at which point I hear him talking to me from the other room and I thought he was behind me. I turn around and a solid black mass is at which point I say oh shit and as soon as I get that out it rushes at me and I am picking myself up at my partners feet. Through the wall. This was the point he helps me up we call to the rest of the team to grab whatever they have with them and exit the buildings After 20 minutes out side him and I decided to call it send everyone home and HIM AND I packed up making sure we were never out of sight of each other there again. Now comes the stupid part him and I have another investigation there we are lining up with another team leader from another team and all three of us have safety protocols set in place and the three of us will travel together with out splitting up at any time

It made me sad when the guides said that many residents bodies were shipped home once they passed away since that means if someone was sent here as a child their family didn’t want to bother with them until they died😢 thanks for another great Grim adventure & showing this historical place before it’s demolished!🖤👻

I used to work at an over 200 year old psychiatric hospital in Brattleboro VT and there's lots of buildings that have been abandoned on the property that are almost similar to this. They even have a graveyard across the street and a tower the patients built a hundred years ago. The property is private unfortunately but it's such a cool space to explore. I was a shift lead so I had keys to all these places and me and co workers used to sneak in lol. Definitely a fun job.

@@jaydeeelady those are plenty easy to go get copied , done it many times, they usually don't care anyways but if you are worried about it just put a piece of tape on it with a letter or name of something magic markered on it, easy !
I took care of a woman who grew up there. The scars were still visible that they had given her. The psychological scars were worse.
Heartbreaking!!! What parent throws their child away to a place like this??? It’s also sad a haunted house is here. These are precious souls after all. Ghost Adventures did an excellent video here. When exploring the utmost of respect should be shown. Thank you for doing this in daylight.
I visited pennhurst with a school trip last spring and I didn't feel any bad energy, but I did feel overwhelming sadness. Our tour guide made us sit in the grass in silence for a few minutes and I had to stop myself from crying. After we left, I had one of the worst headaches I have ever experienced, and I was exhausted for the rest of the day. this was the first time ive ever been to a paranormal location so I have nothing to compare it with, but I do know that pennhurst drained me after being there for only a couple hours.
we also had a former nurse explain some of the museum items to us and the way she talked about patients was really upsetting to hear. I don't trust that she was not mistreating people herself.
The clips with the nurse explaining the music room really makes it REAL and adds that human aspect to it. I always viewed this places as a "creepy place" but of course it was a real place with real people and real situations. Great video as always!!!

Places like this being torn down is such a bittersweet thing. It’s tragic what happened to the kids there but at the same time the building itself is such an interesting piece of history.
It kind of bothers me that they have turned this place of such tragedy into a haunted house. These places deserve respect and reverence considering that an estimated half of the “children” died while in Pennhursts care.
Bruh the haunted house has absolutely nothing to do with the history. Besides even if it did it doesn’t matter because they’re all dead now. Other asylums do the same so who cares.
I love 10 minutes from Pennhurst. When my dad was a kid, they used to give field trips to Pennhurst to look at the patients. The schools took the kids on field trips to Pennhurst when it was still functioning as a hospital. Talk about messed up right?

Here's a question: What happens to the spirits if the building is torn down? Do they still linger on the property, or are they finally set free from that area?
That’s something I always wondered too but I’m assuming they’re free. Either to roam or to their peace
Since they're stuck here, I think they need help being set free to the other side.
I feel like they probably join up with other homeless and lost spirits, Much like our wayward homeless people here.
Remember, the sad dear patients who were abused and died there , be respectful of the dead there , they have been through enough. Anyone who turns that into a Halloween haunt has no conscience or class.
The room you went to in the Mayflower building for the most haunted place had a lot of activity for us when we were there filming a paranormal investigation for our channel. Actually had the same voice come through our spirit box repeatedly. We "played" hide and go seek with him and the catballs. Once he touched them, he very clearly told us to hide them again. Great place to visit!
This reminds me so much of "American Horror Story, Season 2, Asylum"! It must have been hell on earth. These poor boys! 😔

Being a Bostonian now residing in SoCal love the old building's of the east coast you can just feel the energy inside.
Loved this video,it's strange how when explaining the different rooms and what they were used for they say we used to or we had 100 people in one room when they weren't even born yet its just shows how much the building mean to them even after all this time
I am glad to see that you got to document this before it is tore down, I am also glad that it is being torn down, all the pain that went on in that place--although horrible--should never be forgotten.

I work at a indiana prison that started out as a mental hospital than changed in 1977 to a prison. Very spooky all over. State is in process of getting ready to tearing it down and building new. Reminds me of Pinehurst
Watching this definitely reminded me of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. The Haunt looked creepy.
A horror museum I recently visited has a brick from Penhurst. I'll bet that place was a real nightmare for people. Sad stuff.
Loved this video, i went to Votech out there and lived in an apartment about 10 minutes from Pennhurst. Before it was an attraction, I went to explore it one rainy day and was met with police officers wanting to arrest me for trespassing. Luckily there was a mulch company down the street and he came over and saved my ass.

It's hard to imagine because we live in a different world now. Back then this is where you sent your children with disabilities. Parents were told that taking care of their child themselves wasn't an option. There were some parents who resisted and raised their children, but others took the advice of the professionals at the time.

I want to give a big shout out to anyone who currently works, or has worked, at one of these institutions, and who has truly given loving care to the patients. My cousin was born with a developmental disability. She is higher functioning, but my aunt and uncle were unable to give her the full time care she needed. So as a pre-teen, they placed her at one of the few remaining state institutions. My cousin has quite litteraly lived her whole life there, as she still lives there and is almost 50 years old. My aunt and uncle have been pleased with, and thankful for, the care she has received there. She has had many of the same caregivers for years. They feel that the workers there have provided her with the best life possible based on the circumstances
Love seeing you guys in Pennsylvania. I live not too far away and actually was a counselor for mentally-challenged kids in Northeast Pennsylvania in my college years. It’s a challenging job for sure, but rewarding.
I've seen a number of videos of paranormal investigations done at Penshurst. I've even watched a documentary that I think was done in the 60s about the place. One heck of a creepy place. The things that were done to the patients were horrible.

Already impressed by this investigation, and you haven't even started! So many paranormal teams have investigated this site; however, it feels like this particular visit will be the most exceptional! Impeccable match-ups, cinematography, historical background, Michael's steady camera pans and glides, and Jessica's commentary (and presence!)--another stand-out Grimm exploration.
I think that before the building's are demolished they should at least take some historical artifacts out and perhaps even make a museum about the asylum itself rather than simply letting the history die. Perhaps they should just do a sweep of the buildings thoroughly first so that they can make sure that they aren't destroying anything that may be important/interesting to the history of the Pennhurst Asylum. I for one would be very interested to see a museum of artifacts from the asylum. Also, having a museum to respectfully share the story of these individuals would simply just be more respectful towards the people and the children that were involved with this asylum. I am truly devoted to the mysterious and the spooky.

We recently went to Pennhurst for a project, and we are happy to say that they no longer have plans to demo the auditorium. We were able to fly drones inside almost all the buildings while we visited and it was amazing!

Brings back memories of me visiting my aunt who was in an a asylum for 50 years, I was only a kid and the place terrified me and my sister and we would cling to my mother in there, I still have faint memories of been stopped on the huge corridors full of roaming people asking us for cigarettes..Thankfully they closed it in 1989....❤❤
So many poor souls suffered horrifically all their lives in those buildings! That place is full of very very bad energy!!!!
God bless all of them.... especially the ones who were just put away or totally forgotten I have a 20 yr old who was born with a heart condition he's a little behind, but it's ok if I have to take care of him the rest of my life I will it's fine. I'm his momma and I Will!

Wow.....what a bunch of talented artists to create all those characters.....truly impressive. I am also sad that buildings like these are to be destroyed. I live in upstate New York in the Fingerlakes area and the town 6 miles to the north of me...Newark....has a institution like this that is abandoned and still standing.....you should try to come to Newark to explore it. There are actually a bunch of haunted areas in the Fingerlakes. The Belhurst Castle which sits on the banks of Seneca Lake is haunted....plus it's a beautiful hotel if you come to the Fingerlakes area....the Castle is in the town of Geneva.
This is such a sad place because of its history. That place is massive.
I’m watching this as I sit behind the school at the wastewater plant I run. As I type this I can see the School through the woods. If I get called out here at night it’s a sense of someone watching me until I go through the gates of my wastewater plant, then it all goes away like a normal world

i went to Pennhurst years ago. I truly believe i experienced something paranormal there... As i was walking down the halls, I got EXTREMELY cold. My bones felt cold. I was shivering and my teeth were chattering. Everyone else in my group were completely fine (I remember it being relatively warm out)... that place is very dark. May all those innocent souls rest in peace

I worked on a campus similar to this as a young nursing student, and the video brought back memories of those days. Understaffed and people of all mental capacities being "herded" at times. It was a sad situation. I just wonder where the spirits will go when they destroy these buildings.

Watching you guys walk down that tunnel reminded me of a story my mom has told me many times: part of her nursing training back in the 70s included psych training in a place similar to Pennhurst, which also had a tunnel like that. From day one the nursing students were told to have their keys to the building on them at all times, and always travel in pairs, because years prior a young student was in the tunnel alone and was murdered by a patient who had snuck down there and essentially ambushed her.
You guys are great! How cool is it to travel the country checking out spooky sites and attractions with someone you love. Happy Halloween!
I just wanted to say thank you to all the souls that lived there throughout its time in operation. We all owe them our gratitude because in all honesty they all sacrificed themselves sometimes unknowingly and unwillingly so that we could learn about mental health and physical disability’s and abilities. If it weren’t for them and others in other facilities we wouldn’t know half of what we know now. Unfortunately a lot of testing was done on a lot of people in these places. It’s sad to think about but at the same time it helped future generations of people who have the same issues. So thank you to all of the people who lived in these places in the past.

This is a solid video. Not only does it include a building that has never been video documented on UA-cam (Atleast as far as I know) but it also features some rather rare historical footage of the Asylum from the 1940s or 50s.

We went to Pennhurst a few years back for Halloween since we don't live far and man.... that place shook me to my soul. Scared the hell out of me lol.
Big fan of scary stuff, so of course I love the paranormal side of things as well. Seeing you guys get a call to come and film here is awesome! It's such a shame that they are tearing some of the buildings down, but understandable because of the condition of some of the places still standing ( or soon will not be ) But knowing you were able to film the places they let you guys into before demolition; just screams to me how much they care at Pennhurst. I’m an RN. Unfortunately in the U.S. we still have “care facilities” for the sickly poor and aging that would make most urban explorers cry. I have seen facilities that give me nightmares to this day. The State Board often turns their backs and warn the facilities of when they will visit which does not paint an accurate picture of day to day neglect. I saw people all alone, unable to move, crying in their rooms, and overwhelmed care givers with little education who can’t possibly take care of their load of patients. The charge nurses and owners? Sit on their asses and market their facilities to unsuspecting families. We have not changed-just different names and settings.
Well done, as usual! Love your channel for the historical stories, and artifacts, I normally would be ignorant of. Doesn’t hurt to at least be aware, of the subject matter. Knowing is much better than not knowing.
