    Reminds me when I was a kid I would bring a ferro rod, 550 cord a flashlight with 50 batteries, a whole metal mess kit and camp stove a foil blanket. just to go 10 ft into the woodline behind my house. Now after years in the military I usually it’s a Nalgene bottle of water pack of smokes, radio w/ efhw and lifepo4 battery, and maybe the drone/go pro to go climb mountains for Sota

    • @hamradiotube
      @hamradiotube  Рік тому

      You could get lost in those 10 feet and need to set up camp. Better to have it and not need it I always say.

    Would like to know more about the waist belt. That is what potentially makes the pack load bearing by transfering weight from shoulders to hips.

    • @hamradiotube

    The backpack seems like kind of a let down, enough room for radio gear, not really enough room for radio+hiking gear.

  • @kd5you1
    @kd5you1 Рік тому +1

    That seems like a really great backpack with lots of places to store stuff. I recently bought a different backpack for my bug out setup, and I have 75 feet of RG-174 coax in a small plastic container I bought at Randalls. The smaller coax seems to help with weight in both the backpack and when running up the side of a mast. I wish Sotabeams would get their fiberglass masts back in stock, because some of their masts would work really well in a POTA/SOTA/bug out bag. 73 KD5YOU

    Tell me if I worry too much, but I worry about the knobs on the 891 while crammed in there like that in just a canvas bag, under a bit of weight. Am I being too paranoid? I will say that I was moderately impressed by the price. I fully expected him to say that they were charging $160 just for the bare bag and $40 for the extra accessory bags.

    • @hamradiotube
      @hamradiotube  Рік тому

      After dropping my 891 in the snow when I was activating the middle of a frozen lake and the 891 took it like a champ, I stopped worrying about it.

    Looks like a nice pack. 👍 I was hoping you were going to fit the cat in there. THAT would be entertaining. Maybe not for you or the cat, but certainly for your subscribers. I've been using Mosiso padded laptop sleeves to transport the Ft-891 and tuner in my go pack. They also make good pistol cases.

I did this a decade ago when I was insane and played around wih green military manpacks; Green Radio Roundup, April 2006 QST. For those of us "of a certain age", this pack is far too large. My own experience is that I will fill every nook and cranny of a pack, ultimately making it just something to put in my truck (not on my 70 year old back). That's why I purchased an 857 Sierra Pack from Portable Zero LLC. A nice snug fit for my FT-818 (in an Armoloq frame), two 1.5 Ah Bioenno batteries, an EFHW 40m antenna, 25 ft of coax, and a Microsoft Surface computer for logging. Essentially, it's too small for me to overload.

Antenna Hole at the top for Pedestrian Radio Use . Just hoping one of those sto. Bags fits my TS480HX LOL. All the Best , 73, W5heh

      I have the Portable Zero rails on my 7300 so I'm not worried about it at all. But, Gigaparts is going to be releasing bags/sleeves for several different radios very soon. I've tried out first hand the prototype bag for the 7300 and had input into its design. It fits in the bag even with my rails on it, and then that fits into the bigger bag no problem.

      @@chadbruce8534 Its a $60 pack that has design elements with a ham user in mind instead of yet another bag that 'also' works for hams. The Maxpedition water bottle pouch that lots of people use for the 705 costs nearly the same...a water bottle pouch. It isn't going to be all things for everyone, but its hitting a lot of the points that many of us have been looking for and unless the folks at Tom Bihn or Kifaru suddenly become interested in this market, we probably won't see anything else this focused (excepting the hyper-focused options like Icom's bag). I don't know what kind of view you were expecting, but I think most people would have a tough time coming up with significant criticisms for what it is so far.
