At the end of 2018, I went from South Brazil to San Pedro de Atacama, Chile with my VW Beetle. Passing through the Argentina highlands, better known as Puna. One of the most impressive places I have ever seen. An immensity of desert, volcanoes and salt flats passed through my window, as did llamas and alpacas. The altitude, the rarefied air, the wind, the thermal amplitude and sandstorms were just some of the factors that I had to learn to deal with. In addition to the problems faced with the car that became deficient due to not having enough air pressure to work normally, there was still wind, making the car practically stop at times, having to drive in first gear even in flat tarmac roads. The only way out was to be patient. When at almost four thousand meters above sea level, the fuel pump was no longer able to do its job due to the thin air. In an immensity of a desert, there are no stores neither mechanics to solve such problems, I had to improvise. I used a fuel gallon on the roof of the car as a tank, so I was able to leave Argentina, enter Chile, and return to Argentina again until I arrived "in the lowlands" again. I crossed two borders, passed through police and military controls with a gas tank over the car and a hose with a filter hanging over the rear window, and here I am to share this story!
I was thinking about renting out my house and leaving California and living in one of my bugs thanks for the inspiration!!!

Great trip, beautiful music! Did you sleep in the Bug? I have the 1974 super beetle my parents bought at the factory in Germany. It was shipped back to the Seattle area. I am 71 and I am thinking of getting it fixed up and traveling in it. When I was 16 and my cousin Eric was 14 we took back packs and traveled in Alaska for a month. at the huge mountain now called Denali I spent the night sitting in a Bug talking to an Austrian guy. Of course it’s daylight almost all night in the summer. He slept in his VW Bug even though he was very tall.
