Hey Ricky You Did Do A Vid On Patchbays, Marlow Went In With More Depth!! I Thank Both Of You!! Now Which 1 Of You Can Come Over & Help Me Wire My Gear?? 😉👊🏾
I bought a patchbay few moths ago for all my effects pedals and synths. I’m so glad you posted this. I’m a fairly new to analog and I didn’t understand why no one else talked about this. I think this video is fantastic.
Caveat: Depending on what kind of signal you are working with there are also more advanced ways to wire certain patches i.e. normalled, half-normalled or parallel.
Very good advise. I've used a mixer instead of a patch bay for the past few years but as my collection of instruments exceed my mixers channels I've decided to get a patch bay to keep everything connected and the mixer controls what I'm using at the time. Thanks for reaffirming this for me
Good video. I could probably use one. I completely feel you on just not wanting to move the gear around constantly. It just costs so much to be organized. Always a tough choice when you balance buying gear vs buying patch bays/racks/cables, etc.
Agree. Custom length and lighter gauges of cables. 1/4 patch bays are pretty heavy once every patch is filled. So getting a Rear Cable Support Bar is essential.
@@chh8975 I went back and looked and it was cheaper than I remembered. Mogami W2552 Microphone Cable (164', black) Currently $74.95 for 164ft on B&H website
I'd put the inputs and outputs into the patchbay of every piece of gear and then you'd have complete control. I'd never hard patch in and outs of separate gear in the back.
Definitely great advice. I have one PB already, but need at least one more to account for all the gear. So far, I’ve gone the mixer route. But, have known the benefits a PB can provide. I too have unused gear for my mastering chain, that the PB would make ready for daily use. Once I buy more cables, I’ll plan out my PB design. I’ve just been buying more gear over the past years. Which adds to the confusion. Going back to having an organized workflow, would surely increase creativity. 👍🏾✌🏾✊🏾
Hey Marlo, thanks so much for the video and all the other videos that you make. Love your channel and your beats. So my question is what type of cable are you using to connect your equipment to the patchbay? Are you using quarter inch Y cables? Thanks again
Cool video, 9:10 however would be easier to see connections if you took effort to film the front of your patch bay, angled view shows not so much to us. You know what you do, we don't, on the visual side ;) Thanks!
Great vid as always! I have a question: When you plugged the Rhodes output (mono/one cable) to the SP202 (stereo input), the sounds come out in stereo and not just on one side. How do you set up your PB so that mono sources can be patched into a stereo source and not have only one side of speaker output sound? (My Analog Heat for example outputs only one side) 🤷🏻
If I'm not mistaken if you input a signal into the let channel of the AH you'll get a stereo out. In this video I was using the patchbay to connect the rhodes to 1 input of the Mpc and then the mpc puts it out in stereo.
…and again very inspiring video, think I’m pulling the trigger and order one finally…! Maybe you can tell me which patchbay exactly do you have right now and will you recommend that one ? Thank You !🙏✊
Although mixers do a similar job of input and output the patchbay is much different with the only purpose of intercepting signals and easily routing them.
I’ve been thinking for awhile about how I can connect all my devices with little interconnection and being able to have a similar workflow as yourself.
Soooo... Your rack has an awful lot of empty space. Time for some 19" samplers so your patchbay doesn't feel so alone? I was thinking about getting a patchbay as well just so I don't have to unplug stuff on my interface all the time and to put less strain on the input jacks. Great video as always dude!
yeah I usually just pick the sampler I wanna work with and use it for the day. Having a mixer could help sometimes but a patch is more convenient for this I feel plus less space and is passive.
@@mpchead yeah, man id love to create some sort of passive mixer system which is basically like what you got, maybe buttons to manage all that spaghetti cableonara instead lol
@@irorosun6990 I’m not sure the reason exactly. Just something i’ve heard before from different sources.. “connecting balanced to unbalanced could damage equipment” etc. I’ve got a CLEANbox Pro (ART) routed to dedicated channels on my patchbay to safeguard this.

did someone say patchbay?? i'm here for it.
Thanks for making get one. Your video was the trigger.

Im trying to find the best fitting patchbay for me.

That's cool, I might also include my mixer in for extra routing.
Ive had my MPC Live2 for a little over a year. I finally hooked up my patchbay and my mser with my mpc. Thank you Thank you @@mpchead
That's excactly what i searching for 😀, an easy way to plug in/out in everything faster !!!
go for it, things thing helps a lot
One very important thing is to use TRS cables to prevent noise, even with the signal being mono. Bit more expensive but 100% worth it.
But what do you do if you connect audio gear like tape decks that have only RCA connectors? You can only convert RCA to TS connector, right?
was just thinking about this yesterday actually, planning on making myself a small desktop "patchbay" so i can have the MPC input always accessible
Good video. I could probably use one. I completely feel you on just not wanting to move the gear around constantly. It just costs so much to be organized. Always a tough choice when you balance buying gear vs buying patch bays/racks/cables, etc.
Correct on the cable front. It is worth it to learn how to solder and buy the parts and make your own cables

Just regular guitar cables
@@mpchead Thank you. 🎧🥁
AWESOME thanks
Thank you. i have one question about connecting a mixer to a patchbay. Does the mixer comes upstream or downstream the patchbay?
Wow nice video. What brand is that?
Neutrik
@marlo so this would be considered “thru” how you have it set up correct?
Yes I believe that's the correct term

Great overview of how handy patchbays are - can’t believe I’ve gone so long without one! Where did you get the desktop rack from?

This is a Neutrik NYS SPP L but also look into the blue Samson patchbay, looks better and I might get that as well.
Do patchbays have a power socket
Not this one
Nice looking setup Marco! Could you do the same with a mixer?
Although mixers do a similar job of input and output the patchbay is much different with the only purpose of intercepting signals and easily routing them.

Devias usar terra na patchbay
im probably one of the few that hates PB's but I see the purpose

I don't have everything connected yet 😅 there will be any room left once I plug everything.
great video, but it’s a little dark
Confusing lol
There is some latency? For example playing rhodes thru patchbay to roland and sampling to mpc?
No latency. Maybe it was because of the effects I had in the mpc. The patchbay is just a through signal so it should not create latency.
Your voice sounds pretty roomy, maybe you should think about some damping on the walls/carpet on the floor
Thanks I sent my carpets to clean, they'll be back this week.
I thought I was done buying gear, and then I bought a patch bay.
Exactly
i like my mixer, but if i ever get outboard gear then a patch bay is a must. why have i never seen a mixer in your studio. what devilry is this lol ?

be careful not to connect a balanced signal into unbalanced gear “so I’ve read”.
