I got a Duncan Imperial from a mall once when I was a kid. At the time I was impressed with the build quality of it because before that I only got yoyos like the ones you saw at Target but it also made me think yoyoing was extremely hard because it was so difficult to get it to sleep and it died out before I could really do anything. It was only about a decade later that I understood fixed axels and bearings and stuff like that.
I had those Duncan yoyos starting out and they were good for learning how to throw but ultimately stunted my growth. Wasn't until I was much older that I realized you had to have an "unresponsive" yoyo to do all the cool tricks. On a complete whim I bought my first real yoyo, a MYY N12 on Amazon, and ever since then I've taken it seriously. I would not recommend these big box store yoyos to beginners though. There are some great beginner yoyos from YYF and MYY that will have longevity and aren't complete garbage to use. I will make the exception for the duncan limelight however, I have one and it's kinda cool as a novelty throw. Never giving up my Shutter or Outlier 2 though.
Holy shit dude, you are one hell of a co-sign. Hobby Lobby actually has Yo-yo factory Whips....I think that is the best you can get besides a novelty toy store.
Back in the day the Duncan Yoyo man would show up at various stores and shops all over. He would put on demonstrations and show us how to do tricks and such. The corner grocery store would do a booming business selling yoyos. Those were great days.
I hadn't yoyo'd in 10 years after my protostar was stolen. I found a butterfly XT at Target for $5 and it was decent enough for me to do some tricks with. Prompted me to get back into it at least!
@@-thunderousofficial- I don't think the original butterfly has a ball bearing in it and I didn't see any others at Target. Since I learned on semi-modern yoyos like the dark magic and protostar, it wouldn't of had the same impact on me. The Butterfly XT has a ball bearing which lets you do most of the simple tricks on it easily, including some string tricks.
So, our local target(s) almost always have Butterfly-XTs. Sometimes they are out, but all the stores here at least have a SKU for one. If I recall, they are about 7USD. They are usually over by where you found the Rubik's cubes on that wall with the board games, some stores it's located in that section with the bins. It's certainly a yoyo I have personally outgrown. But if someone takes interest in the hobby and they aren't ready to purchase online, A Butterfly-XT is perfectly serviceable for learning your fundamentals like Sleeper, Breakaway, etc. etc. etc.
I have gotten ones for party favors from the department stores. Always brings smiles to kids faces, but I agree they never let long. Lol then again no toy with a toddler lasts. Loved the vid!
Back in the early 2000s they had full on YoYo stores. With the High end ones displayed in glass cases. Yomega was big back then so i had a Fireball and the X Brain.
I had one of those spring loaded light up yoyos that you found in the toy store when I was 7 or 8. It was probably the coolest thing I had at the time, would definitely get one again as it was really easy to use. Probably not the easiest to do tricks with but it was fun.
I tried doing this, (I wanted to see if I had any better luck) and I found a bunch of yo-yos. I bought 3. 1. Duncan Imperial 2. Skyva UNRESPONSIVE YO-YO 3. Metal yo-yo that can be responsive, UNRESPONSIVE, AND 5a! (And it came with a Whole kit- A TON of strings, weights to make it 5a, unresponsive bearing, and bearing remover!) Love the video!
I started on a blazing team yoyo that comes back up automatically, I thought I was so good with a level 1 yoyo then I got a duncan butterfly freehand yoyo and that taught me! I now use a Magicyoyo V4 and K2 aPlus
There used to be a store in Kansas city that had a ton of different unresponsives. They closed permanently. I checked a place in Chicago and they only has shutters. Sad. I don't think there's anywhere else in the US.
Im practicing with a Duncan Butterfly XT i bought from Target for $9 a few months ago. Used to love yoyos when i was a kid 25 years ago or so and remember duncan and yomega as the hot brands at my school. Was suprised they had it at target. Works amazing for my level and nostalgia is off the charts.
What do you do if you got your yo-yo off of Amazon? Mine is really weird.and the part of the yo-yo is going outward in a point, even thought it’s supposed to be going inwards so I can do the tricks like the dna.:(
Just a few years ago yoyos were still popular. I live in southeast asia so you can't really step into a toy store without seeing a big pile of Blazing Teens yoyos. Now they're all just gone. At least the online community is still there.
I found my yomega brain the other day and it got me into yoyos again and I did order a Glow ascent to start using and get into the more advanced stuff. This video reminded me that I got my Yomega brain from Toysrus and they also had the fireball when I got my brian many years ago. Too bad toysrus is no longer around. I did see they are doing a thing with Macy's or some department store to sell toys in their stores but I'm sure it will only be the top best selling toys and they most likely will not sell yoyos.
I’m new to your channel and I think I think I was at that same target at the start… LIKE I LITERALLY BOUGHT THAT MARVEL YO-YO BC I WAS GETTING IN TO YO-YOING AT THE TIME AND I DIDNT KNOW IT WAS NOT THAT GOOD. It broke the day after lol
1:21 where I live your lucky if packages from America arrive in 2 months. And most things you have to buy form america because most English companies are in America and it is pain
If you do a green triangle that pops out from the front you can do a cool trick. Pop it and then in the same pop Brent stole back into it its pretty cool when you repeat it
In December 2024, Walmart had the standard Duncan Imperial models priced at about $7. Target has the same ones, plus their standard Butterfly, sll for just $3 at their front discount area -- in their toy section they had the Butterfly XT with metal ball bearing axel at $4.59. Hobby Lobby has the Whip-It for $5.99.
as a 50 year old guy, in rural america they never had real yoyos to buy. duncan butterfly or imperial was the best you could do. But at least its physicaly possible. I got a sage that i like. probably upgrade to a metl one one of these days. I wonder if you could upgrade a duncun to a bearing. Darn it there goes my weekend.

Big 5 is by far the best local store I have found yoyos in..... Was that the mall of america?!?! Cus there is a yoyo store there that is exclusively yoyos
I have over 300 yo yos.been doing yos for 35 years.back then they actually had Full fledged yo yo stores that onlyyyy sold yo yos. They were popular. It's where I first bought my playmax bumble bee turbo.A highly sought out yo yo today.Back then also a metal yo yo was 200.00 compared to 30.00 ones today.Amazing
Lucky every store had throws cause if one didn't I was gonna get it's email address and complain lol this was such a good vid Lucas ur killing it keep these kinda vids coming and you break UA-cam I'll help by watching lol
You're pretty much spot on about shopping online for the higher end yoyos. I was able to get a Duncan Bumblebee and Hornet as well as another Duncan that had extra spacers that allowed you to change it from a looper to a butterfly design for string tricks don't recall theodel name though .I found them 10 years ago at Toys R Us but they've all closed now.

Same!
Sase
Same here. I would still get the imperial and butterfly more for nostalgia and basic tricks than any complex tricks
I remember Big 5 used to always sell Freehands. Sometimes the Whip or the One. Found a Grind machine at a Sport Chalet once.
Can't knock a limelight, it's a good "oldschool" style yoyo with some fun lights. Also those were the old style ones with wood hubs.
My first Yo-Yo was from hobby lobby. It was the whip responsive yoyo and it was what got me into yoyoing
I used to get yomega yoyos from a little science store. That was quite a few years ago but I loved that store! They need more like it!
Was that store A 2 Z in Massachusetts by chance ??
That YoYo ball was fire!!!😂😂😂
