- A look inside Merc Non Integrated trim system. Did get the motor to run. It does run strong but not my formal recommendation on how to fix them. Instructional purposes only. Thanks for your continued support and as always, Thanks for watching!!!
Great Job! Same thing happened to my power trim motor ('81). Stopped working and went to price a new one and was shocked to find out what a rebuilt cost. So, I took the thing apart, went through the same things you did, only difference, I put black Permatex on the back plate and front to seal it and keep moisture out. It worked flawlessly up to the time I sold the boat. Thanks for another great video. L6's rock.
Absolutely the most gone electric motor I've seen revived. At top of video I was thinking, "no way", but now wow! Great save...
Thanks, very informative. I had an older aftermarket Prestolite pump/motor I was keeping as a spare for my boat, and when I went to test it, no bueno...Watched your video, did the same steps to my pump motor, and it is back to life again!
Thanks for the video Son, My 1979 trim motor is the same as yours and your video gave me the confidence to refurbish mine. Took it apart sanded down all the rusty parts and re-greased and put it all back together in about 3 hours. I used a wire wheel to clean up the armature and 120 grit sandpaper for the magnets. Works great now. Yet I still know that I have to eventually get a new one.
I knew I was going to a tleast try to take mine apart but I found this video and it's exactly what I needed to do. Saved a few hundred bucks, thanks a ton!
It was on the trim install video I missed the the unlocking part thanks I have learnt so much from you
A vise, power drill, crokus clothe, clamp drill in vise and spin armature while holding strip of cc, clean it up real nice, enjoyed video, by the way, fixed my XR6 with all new ignition and powertune, exhaust ports stopped up, runs great.
your video saved me a ton of money! It was absolutely the brushes. Just took it apart exactly like you, thourough cleaning and 45 yer old pump works like a charm! a little tip for y'all, if you lose the little ball bering at the top, just get a bicycle ball bearing. Local shop will prolly GIVE it to you.
Hi MerCSon L6, have you ever adjusted the valves inside the reservoir. There are 3 adjustments, 2 ball bearing/spring type and 1 with a valve/spring type. I believe they hold the pressure when raising motor trim/tilt. I took mine apart to clean. When reinstalling I found that the motor would fall down quickly once raised….. ie it wouldn’t hold. So I assume the valves need closing off further. Ram in not leaking at all. 😀🤞🍀🍀🍀🏖
Opened the reservoir and tightened down the 2 valves down again, and found that this fixed the problem…… the motor stays up and comes down ,only on the down trim switch. Thanks for the “Inspiration”. 😊🍀🍀🍀🌈
Will be rebuilding on my 89 Black max soon. Great video 👍🍻
Great video. Dealing with an issue on my trim/tilt too. Haven’t fully taken the pump apart yet and this video was helpful to get a feel for things before I dig in. Merc 1100ss.
my trim motor bricked.. looks like i was here a few months ago watching this.. now i need to do this job.
Good video to see. Thought mine went out a while back, but it turned out to be a wiring issue. Cost of replacement is ridiculous.
Going to share your videos on iboats
I have an1985 115hp and am having a hard time figuring which kit i need to rebuild the tilt trim cylinders hoping you might know the part numbers. Thanks for the videos very helpful

Great video , keep up the good work .
Do those motors have any kind of heating element that when too hot they stop working like a over current protection heater? My tilt trim works for a few seconds then stops. My only idea so far from what I've gathered so far is to troubleshoot the motor itself first then if all is good the wiring. The solenoids and wiring and toggle switches are brand new.
Negative. Something us wrong with your pump my friend. Son
@@MerCSonL6 thank you for replying, it could be the brush's might be cheaper to buy a new one tho
Hi , can you tell me is a trim unit for a 90 h.p. is able two be bled .
Great video and thanks for posting. I have a 1971 135hp merc L6 with power trim. Pump works fine and the motor trims and tilts as it should. My problem is if you trim out and let it sit overnite the next morning it's gone down. Got any suggestions?
There's a leak in your trim cylinders. Son
I have a 83 Merc 2 stroke with tilt and trim. It works for a few seconds and then stops. You have to wait a few seconds and then it will work again. I don't know if the 83's even had relays to get to hot.. what could be the problem
i took the valve body apart trying to get the motor housing separated...i guess this was unnecessary ?? just needed to separate the valve assembly from motor housing ?? i wish we could have seen you seperating the 2 parts...
Please reohrase the questions. I'm a little confused (which doesn't take much). Son
My PT motor was stuck, exactly like yours, though the end cap came all apart when I went to pull the rotor out, the ball was seized into the cap like yours, tearing everything apart. Trouble is, when I source new endcap assemblies w/ brushes, all the new ones have both bushes ON the new cap, where one of my brushes is actually coming off (soldered to) one of the coils inside the body of the assy, NOT the cap itself, any ideas why? I can't find caps that match my brush config, though I believe my motor is an ARCO 6217, which was a replacement for the stock one Merc had at the time I think.
It would probably be better to replace. DB electrical has what u need. Son
Quick question for you, how do you test
The solenoid and the switch? One of them are gone out on my boat, cant figure out witch one.
Disconnect the switch. Jump 12v to the trigger side of the Selenoid(s) and if it works your switch is bad. You can also disconnect the switch and use a volt meter to see if when you press the switch voltage is being transferred to the green/blue. Let me know. Son
@@MerCSonL6 thank you so much, I disconnected the switch and jumped the green wire and the motor tilted. Now I just need to find a new switch that's not 100 bucks.
Can anyone tell me if it's possible to fix this if it's been flooded with hydraulic fluid. an which would be my best approach to do so thanks
You need new seals....
Great job! Love your videos I have a 90
hp 1986 L 6 . I’m having problems with my reverse gear it is not engaging, forward works fine. Also my throttle lever is very old and poorly maintained by the previous owner it literally broke into pieces do you have any suggestions which throttle lever should I buy and from where? Greatly appreciated thanks.

Thanks for your response appreciate it sorry forgot to mention it is a top mount and has power trim found a couple on amazon just not sure which one it is.
Mercson, my valve body is leaking and once my 140hp is lowered pump runs but not enough oil left to raise the motor back up. Where can I get a seal/ gasket kit to rebuild the resavoir and valve body? Thanks for any help.
I left the air vent screw tightened(don’t travel with open to prevent leaking) and ran trim for a bit and I think fluid went into motor, what is your recommendation to clean the fluid out of the pump and armature
Brake cleaner and elbow grease. Son
Hey mate,
What’s the difference between the 76395A3 and the eBay listed 76395A2
Hi MerCSon, Appreciate your videos
I have a similar Mercury T&T unit to this one in the video
My issue is the actual pump system
Do you have any material of taking the pump apart
Or can you point to Manual to assist
Took things apart and need a diagram to ensure all goes in the correct spots
Thanks 🤞
Are you referring to the valve body by saying "pump system?"
Yes, that is right…….. I have worked thru it and replaced the value body unit. Thanks 😊
Is there any other motor I can use besides this one i cant find it nowhere there sold out everywhere any recommendations
DB electrical has them. So does Amazon. Son
I have look on Amazon
Is there a way you can put a link if possible thanks
So how do I unlock the motor so I can move the trim up and down
Cut off the reverse lock. Son
What kind of seal keeps the oil out of the motor, I've got one that keeps getting oil in the motor and shorting it out
My trim stalls halfway up. How do I get my trim to go up pass the halfway point? It goes up after I lift it with my hand.
Lift your engine completely up and lock it. Then check your reservoir to make sure its full. Son
@@MerCSonL6 I lifted my motor all the way up. Reservoir is full. Air is out of the line. Trimmed it down fine. Trimmed it up & still stalls at halfway point. Should I check the trim up wiring?
How do you add or check the fluid on this?
Through the flathead screw on the corner of the pump with the engine in the upright position. Son
i was on my last lap of the last day of boating getting ready to take my boat home for the season when the trim motor bricked... With this 1 video I too can rebuild my motor.. I have this exact trim unit... do you know of a cheap aftermarket replacement for this motor ? all the comparability numbers end 1 series before my number... I have 45060A1 everything I saw says stuff starting at A2 and going up.
I saw Sierra brand with this number 18-6763 is this a correct aftermarket unit ?
I don't know part numbers very well. Are you looking for a new trim pump?
Have a 70' merc 800 thunderbolt. tried this but it was shattered inside, know where to find a new motor? thanks in advance and appreciate da vids

@@MerCSonL6 thanks so much man. Guessing you can't replace just the motor on top and have to do the reservoir with it. How would you recommend extracting the existing fluid if there is no bleed valve behind the transom?
@@AimaginationHub it's a messy job. I would Uninstall the pump from the stern and unscrew the hoses with a drain pan underneath. Have plenty of rags handy. I always make messes changing out trim pump. 😅
@@MerCSonL6 sounds like a plan, thanks man + for the super informative videos
@@MerCSonL6 hey man just got the pump about to do the job. Im having trouble locating the passthrough piece that allow the 4 hoses to passthrough the boat to the pump. any ideas? thanks man your videos have been a huge help to a 20 year old with no prior knowledge on this sht!
How do you bleed the system of air?
Gravity. Son
Are those power trim pumps hard to find? I have a mercury thunderbolt ignition 65 hp motor without power trim.
They can be difficult. But most dual ram systems are the same despite different serial numbers. Son
mine is leaking fluid how do i stop this leak
Where?
