I am new to FreeCAD. This is the second tutorial of yours I have watched. You do an exceptional job of explaining you actions, and reasons for them. Please keep making English versions. You appologise for you English, because it is not your first language, but you explain yourself better than some native English speakers I have dealt with.

Thank you Florian for making this tutorial in English. I didn't know one could reference named constraints like that, which seems very nifty. A similar approach which might be better in some cases is to use a spreadsheet. It allows grouping all such named variables making it easier to get an overview of all parameters. To do so one would add a spreadsheet to the project, and add values in a cell with an assigned alias. The aliases can then be referenced as with the named constraints with e.g. "Spreadsheet.wt". This can allow for more complex relations where for example the value of once cell could be the evaluation of a function.

I've just started using FreeCAD within the last month and your tutorials have been the best structured that I have come across. Please keep up the great work. I've been following the non-English also as the UA-cam auto CC does a pretty good job of auto capturing and displaying with a bit of error in some words. Things like FreeCAD getting transcribed as Freak and other small things.
It's a bit slower following but that works out great and gets me to focus better.
I truly appreciate the teachings and proper methods of approach instead of the shotgun method most other tutorials seem to present.
Your English is superb so no need to worry.
I really like the series of examples that you supply giving users the opportunity to learn to do it on their own and then follow up with seeing a professional approach as to how to get it completed. Also, highlighting reinforcing the trouble areas that FreeCAD has is very nice (e.g. Topological Naming issues, etc.). I was not aware of the issue until you mentioned it in this video. That is how new I am to the system.
    Keep up the marvelous work.

thank you for the video. I created the pipe on an alternative way, two concentric circles. The thickness wall for the cross reference between 1st sketch and the rectangle did it creating a construction line between both circles and taking the measure as reference. Quite nice tips you are giving, I am learning a lot and I have stopped using external geometries or creating sketches on faces following the robustness hierarchy to tight and controll all the model. 1. coordinate systems 2. planes 3. faces 4. edges

I tried doing this before watching the video and I think it should've worked. Instead of extruding the cylinder by rotating a rectangle sketch, I extruded a pair of concentric circles. Everything was just fine until I tried making the grove, at which point everything just kind of broke. The geometry was all messed up and no matter which rotation axis I used, reversed or not, symmetry or not, it just turned into garbage with random polygons sticking out and the circle holes becoming triangular. When I did this again after watching your video with the revolving rectangle to create the tube, the thing worked fine.
What is the issue? How do I avoid that?

No specific reason, Spreadsheet Workbench was just not part of the things I wanted to explain here. If you have to deal with a lot of parameters, spreadsheet is of course the better option.
It's the common problem: You cannot show everything i a 10 minutes tutorial without further explanation, and suddenly you find yourself recording some 50 minute tutorial.. :)

      @@FreeCADAcademy You're most welcome. I learned a lot.
In this video and others by different authors you talk about the dangers of the FreeCAD naming hierarchy - or something like that. I think it has to do with not using the 'link to edge' functionality.
Any chance you could make something on that topic?
I've used link to edge *a lot* and have often found myself frustrated with FreeCAD somehow 'getting it wrong' further through a models development - especially if I have to use undo. I'm wondering if this is why you and other contributors advise against it.
      Thank you!

Hi great tutorial. I am using v0.19 the same as what you are using, yet I am not able to enter the formula like you do. Constraints are not recognised. I have found the only way around this is to enter the sizes into a spreadsheet as I progress, and then use those.

I'm experiencing a problem at this step also. My model vanishes and then I get the error "linked shape object is empty" if I follow through with the expression. Maybe a bug in this version? (I'm also on 24291)
Edit: Found a post describing why this was not working (in my case at least) and it has to do with "construction geometry" we used in a previous step. It is perhaps a persistent change vs. the assumed momentary switch. I went back into the sketch and selected the rectangle, then pressed the construction geometry button, and it let me proceed with the groove. Here is the link where I found the solution:

Great tutorial! But you're falling into the trap that computer programmers used to make, or trying to be too compact with variable names. Now there are some standard engineering terms, such as ID & OD, for the inner diameter and outer diameter of pipes,. Of course, these are probably different in English & German, so you might not know them. But "slot_x" might be a better choice than "dd"
