Regarding the Alpha Centauri supernova: Wouldn't our Sun's solar winds deflect a large amount of the stellar gas, dust and winds from the supernova?
That's possible, but that adds an added risk of our sun's magnetic field being twisted to the point where we get some crazy solar flares and such.
