+Len Burke MAN ! You guys were an awesome group!!!! I roll my eyes when anyone calls you guys a one hit wonder. You had a whole bag of great soul hits!!!!!!!!
The 5 Stairsteps need to be remembered and honored for their contributions to the landscape of soul music. I hope if Unsung does not pay tribute ...that I will find a way to make it happen.
Since the Beatles used to cover Motown songs on their first two albums, it's only fair that a R&B group cover one of their songs.....besides this is the best version of "Dear Prudence" i've heard.
It's been 13 years since your comment, but I wanted you to know that there are lots of The Beatles covers by R&B artists. I have a playlist on here of R&B covers of them. It's worth checking out! ✌🏾❤️✊🏾and🤘🏾
Oh, I remember when the Stairsteps came out with this one. But the New York radio stations were so hooked on the Beatles, this solid cover version remained virtually unnoticed. Glad you found it and uploaded it, HeyRoz!
On this day in 1970 {March 15th} "Dear Prudence" b/w "O-O-H Child" by the Five Stairsteps entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #85; fifteen weeks later on July 12th, 1970 it peaked at #8 {for 2 weeks} and spent 16 weeks on the Top 100... And it reached #14 on Billboard's R&B Singles chart... Between 1966 and 1971 the Chicago soul group had fifteen Top 100 records; eight using the name The Five Stairsteps, six known as The Five Stairsteps and Cubie, and then with their last charted record it was just, The Stairsteps...
+sauquoit13456 "Dear Prudence" peaked in the 60's when djs started flipping the record over and playing the beautiful "Ooh Ooh Child". The label pulled the single, and sent it back out with "Child" as the "A" side. A different "B" side was on this single. I don't know if Buddah ever released "Dear Prudence" as a single again. It IS a great version.
I have`nt heard this in more than thirty years. As beautiful as the Beatles original was, this version almost surpasses it.Glad to know others loved it as much as I did
This is one of the reasons I LOVE UA-cam. This song pop into my mind out of nowhere. I didn't even remember that it was the Beatles, and then the Five Stairsteps, and whammo, there it is.
Really goes to show how talented they were. That's not a easy song to do with its intended spirit. And they had a few add-ons that were very well done.
@lwmson Funny thing, I've always considered this among the best of the Beatles work. There is such a pureness, non-stock sound to this song, after hearing how the song was devised it made sense. I have on vinyl and .mp3 probably every cover made of this song, and...it's my all time favorite. This is actually my favorite version (including the Beatles which is actually 3rd behind Doug Parkinson's version).
Until I heard this, I thought Alanis Morriset did the best cover of Dear Prudence, even though it was live and not studio. Ooh Child was always a big fav of mine, but it wasn't until today that I checked out more of their catalogue. Thank God I did! THIS is what real music is all about: it hits ur soul, makes you move or it moves you, and you don't want it to end, so you play it again. Louder.
I bought the single because I was such a Beatle fan and was only 10 years old when the White Album came out was too much money for me. They really do a nice job on this. Played the single a lot back then.
love u some five stairsteps very unique WAHID one of a kind UNIQUE back then as now u gave us dear prudence and ooh child things are gonna get better now how old was uyall with that ol skool wisdom that we all still need then as now no sepecially now yall were special then as now and im so sorry for all your loss u and your story belong in the smithsonian as well as every history book and may God bless your Mom and Dad
If I recall well this song was written by Lennon regarding Mia Farrow's sister Prudence, when traveling to India in their spiritual quest voyage to visit the Maharishi. (I guess was 1968).
This is a great version of this song. I actually like this better than the Beatles original. I immediately bought the single when it came out. And as others have said, when the flip side "Ooh Child" became a hit they re-issued "Ooh Child" with a new B side.
This is from a great album released in 1970. OOh Child was on it too, but I am looking for a couple of other really great songs from the album. If anyone can post them, I would love to have them. They were a favorite of one my dearest friends who has since passed away. But he sang them all the time: Sweet as a Peach and Up and Down. Great to hear Dear Prudence again!
i found their version on a oldies re-issue 45 in 1990(my 45 of ''OOH CHILD'' has ''WHO DO YOU BELONG TO'' on the b-side).great soul version of this BEATLES classic!
This was a Family that was slept on! Maybe with a little more Promotion I believe They & tha Sylvers wouldve been absolutely spectacular oh yeah & their 2nd incarnation as tha Invisible Mans Band was Great 2!
I rarely love covers, but this was as good, maybe even a bit better than the Beatles original...and that's pretty hard to do. I was a kid on a different level in the early 70's I loved the sophistication of the Stairsteps over the J5 (and I loved the J5).
Very nice cover of this Beatle song. The song was never really considered a Beatle classic, but it was one of my favorite Lennon-McCartney tunes nonetheless.
2009herbie - WHO the hell are you talking about, its definate that you have the wrong group... hahaha the oldest member of the Stairsteps in was sister Alohe Burke followed by Clarence Burke Jr, James Burke, Kenneth Burke (Keni Burke), Dennis Burke but they were on George Harrison's Dark Horse Label for a stint - Clarence went on to form The InvisibleMan Band while Kenny (Keni) enjoyed a successful career as a solo artist and producer.
Actually both versions Music is what makes the song..the lyrics are a little play groundy..but the music is very erie and different..the beatles were good for very strange sounding songs...ie a day in the Life, mind games(John Lennon) Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds..yes the beatles really really took you to another place
And they were just kids and family h ok w many doors can you knock on today and they singing and more importantly acting and loving in HARMONY I pray their parents gets their blessings for giving us so much joy through them love them was so underrated and unappreciated but I love them now then and forever🏆🥇r 💃🕺🎶🎵🥁🥁
John and Paul was blown away when they heard this version of Dear Prundunce
Thanks to all the fans
+Len Burke was that little kid you? the female is beautiful. beautiful family. where are you guys from?

Soul legends from my hometown of Chicago paying homage to the legendary John Lennon. Musically, it doesn’t get any better 👌🏾💯
O o h child brought me the Them , and then I discovered this glorious cover! I'll be smiling the rest of the day
Great version of a GREAT song! Love to all that love this one dave west London ❤️ x

They have some of the biggest hits that still get played at the Stepper Sets in Chicago
love this group all of them gorgeous
Man, this is fantastic! The Five Stairsteps give a funky nuance to this John Lennon song. Thanks a lot for this.
Very impressive, I've played this song at least twice daily for the last year. Never gets old.
This is one of the reasons I LOVE UA-cam. This song pop into my mind out of nowhere. I didn't even remember that it was the Beatles, and then the Five Stairsteps, and whammo, there it is.
why am I just hearing this at 31 yrs old...and why am I tearing up😢😟
I'm just hearing it for the first time at 31 years old too! Absolutely brilliant version :)
Played on BeatlesandBeyond Radio years ago
perhaps for the same reason I am doing the same but at 54. :)
This cover is so strong, it kicks its own ass.
What a beautiful family!
I really like the Beatles but this is my favorite version of this song... drum's, Bass, and piano are outstanding on This cut.
Many of my friends only heard this version. Still rocks
Really goes to show how talented they were. That's not a easy song to do with its intended spirit. And they had a few add-ons that were very well done.
OMG. Just OMG. What a beautiful recording this is.

Thanks for your music. RIP Clarence Burke, Jr.
RIP Clarence Burke, Jr. & Cubie Burke....
I just found out recently that Clarence Jr was gone ... Now Cubie?!! 😢
I think it was a year apart from each other
Are the other 4 still living? They were before my time, but like their music.
@@emilymalden3310 James died 2/19/21. To the best of my knowledge, the other three siblings (Alohe, Dennis, and Kenneth "Keni") are still alive.
These guys are great... Best version
I loved this record. It was the flip side of Oooh Child. RIP Clarence. You will always be a part of us.

I always liked this group. My favorite song of theirs was "Didn't It Look So Easy?", which I believe should have been a much bigger hit!
This is the absolutely the best version of this song.
If I recall well this song was written by Lennon regarding Mia Farrow's sister Prudence, when traveling to India in their spiritual quest voyage to visit the Maharishi. (I guess was 1968).
Great version !!

Always loved this song, but I'm really grooving on this version.
This is a great version of this song. I actually like this better than the Beatles original. I immediately bought the single when it came out. And as others have said, when the flip side "Ooh Child" became a hit they re-issued "Ooh Child" with a new B side.
That must be worth a good amount.
Love this version...

@PetePeterkin I most certainly did...because the "B" side is the one I played the most.

Did they live on Manhattan Ave?
J "Bigfoot" B behind the kit
