Turbo. Heavy on the cheese, and the fun. And some really over-the-top guitar solos. If this is a pop album, a guy like me is pleased to hear a pop album full of shredding and riffs. The guitar synth sounds were an interesting dimension, and sometimes really cool, like on "Out in the Cold". The inclusion was a continuation of a bit of usage on songs like "Love Bites" from the previous album.... but in a more all-out upfront approach rather than just as coloration. The short-lived "pop-metal guitar-synth era" was kind of interesting... "Somewhere in Time", "Afterburner", maybe even "Hysteria" is in there.... a certain sound and approach that was a bit of a trend that quickly disappeared. There are some albums where you can just hear them and go "oh yeah, this was during 1986-1988"... even the songwriting approach was a part of it.

I can't remember exactly, but the first JP album I purchased as a kid in the 80's was either "Turbo" or "Priest...Live." I still have those original vinyl. They're a bit worn now. That "Turbo" era introduced me to them and then I purchased more of their material. They became my favorite metal band.

Twin Turbos would have been cool. It was supposed to be half-retrospective half-modern and I think that would have pleased some of the people who frown at Turbo. But it also wouldn't have been as focused, and would have been a higher price point, so maybe it wouldn't have sold as well with people who were new to the band. Who knows. All I know is, I'd like to have heard what it would have sounded like if all 19 songs got fully finished at that point in time.
To me, this album is better than Ram It Down, which has some good songs and some stuff that sounds like it was just thrown together at the last second.

The title track is the best song on the album IMO. The intro synth guitar, the song building up gradually and the slow tempo in the beginning of the guitar solos before kicking up the tempo again is what makes this song so great. There will allways be people that hate when a band try something new. If it had an impact on Power metal bands, I can’t tell, because I dont listen much to that genre. But for me this album is in my top 5-6 list over Priest albums, nr. 1 is Defenders of the faith🤘😎

You forgot 2 songs from the Turbo sessions that were released. There were 5 (not 3) Turbo session b-sides released as bonus tracks when they remastered their discography in 2001. They were: "All Fired Up" (released on the Turbo reissue), "Prisoner Of Your Eyes" (released on the Screaming For Vengeance reissue), "Red, White And Blue" (released on the British Steel reissue), "Turn On Your Light" (released on the Defenders of the Faith reissue), and "Heart Of A Lion" (released on the Metalogy box set). That leaves 2 unreleased songs from the Turbo sessions (considering the other 4 were placed on Ram It Down). Those remaining 2 that are still unreleased are: "Under The Gun" and "Fighting For Your Love" (as you already mentioned). Last thing to point out, Rob re-recorded "Heart of a Lion" and "Prisoner of Your Eyes" in the studio in 2000-2001 for his Live Insurrection compilation album he did with his band Halford and he even played Prisoner of Your Eyes live on Rockline in 2002. Lastly, do you know if the 4 songs from the Turbo sessions that were placed on Ram It Down were re-recorded during the Ram It Down sessions, or are they the original recordings from the Turbo sessions?

I respectfully disagree. Priest were chasing mainstream success. That song would have been one of the best songs on the Top Gun soundtrack which sold like 10 million copies. What a great song to introduce people to the band, and they could still play it live. As a matter of fact, it would probably be their biggest song in America, instead of some hidden gem on the back of an album.

Everything about it was different than Defenders. It was "geared" more toward the audience. Very theatrical. A song like Parental Guidance was obviously aimed at adolescents. Kind of like Star Wars. When you went into the arena there were barely any people over 25. Mostly kids. *strongest song. Locked In. Because of the cool driving riff, modulation in the chorus and the leads. 2nd is Out in the Cold

Turbo is an awesome release by an awesome Heavy Metal band. If not for this album we would not have all the awesome Power Metal bands of today. Judas Priest is the lineage of Power Metal, and IMO Turbo is the starting point of the new breed of Power Metal bands. I strongly suspect that Freedom Call have based their image, style and sound off of Turbo. And that is a good thing. Turbo is one of the albums where every track made it to my “Best of Judas Priest” playlist on my iTunes library and apple devices (don’t pretend you don’t have a similar playlist yourself, or you wouldn’t be here!). Whereas releases like Nostradamus have a few tracks contributing to said playlist. Songs like Reckless, Locked In, Out In The Cold, and the title track release happy chemicals in my brain and are certified Heavy Metal Ear Worms. If the synthesiser opening of the Turbo track doesn’t fill you with utter excitement (though admittedly for a very different reason than say, the drum fills opening Painkiller), then you are missing out. Painkiller is great to push your workout, Reckless is for when your having a bad day and need cheering up. Such is the power of (Metal) music. The cassette of Turbo lived in my Walkman for months on release and I still visit this release on my iPhone regularly. Turbo is Metal and is what I would categorise as a “Summer Album” in feel, along with Blizzards of Ozz, or 1987. As an extremely wise young man once said in a Judas Priest documentary “Judas Priest are number One!” I’m enjoying these video’s, keep ‘‘em coming.

Turbo is pretty cool, catchy 80s rock/pop album + you can still hear the Judas Priest in it. They had done some goofier songs before (Hot Rockin'), and Turbo is definitely goofy in some parts (Locked In), but also emotional in others (Out in the Cold), twisted (Reckless) and kicking ass (Turbo Lover). The other songs are really popy, but they had also done some pop sounding songs before (Evening Star, Living after Midnight). From my perspective, it's not as heavy or deep as Class, Screaming or Sin, but it definitely has some elements from previous albums. Defenders had some synth elements and you can still hear some goofiness on the legendary Painkiller. Don't forget, there were albums like Rocka Rolla or Point of Entry, and yes, those albums were not epic, but they still have the soul of Judas Priest, so the Turbo does. Ram it Down was a bridge between Turbo and Painkiller in some ways, so we should be happy for Turbo. As I have already said, Painkiller reminds me Turbo in some parts (for example Touch of Evil).

The only drawback is when they play live they don’t use the same since or if they play a smaller venue and they cheat or they use backing tracks to create those sounds, but if they were to play alive, show with no, since it has sound good, it has to be next level.

I liked the way the band made it and I just can't get it enough of listening to this album.
It's full of fun, which lacks in many metal albums to me, and it's a shame that they made "Ram it down" heavier to justify themselves with the hardcore fans because it's not the way it was meant to be.
It takes guts to take new decisions when you are a well-established band like them and they won the challenge. Definitely.
"Locked in" is my favourite tune because it's well balanced between their style and the (then) new stuff.

When I first got this album, I was a bit shocked because the opening track didn't sound like Judas Priest at all, but it was a great song in its own way, something in between Metal, New Wave (proto- Hip Hop) and as I now know Industrial - at that time I would have compared it with New Romantic music. It wouldn't have been so much of a shock if I'd already heard the Screaming For Vengeance and Defenders of the Faith albums, which were already incorporating a slight Industrial element, but my previous listening experience was Scoop 33. I think Turbo Lover possibly inspired the music to the animated sci-fi series Ulysses.
I had long liked the synth sounds that were featured on this album, but previously they had gone with what I then considered boring music that had no other merits in my opinion at that time, so now I was getting the best of both worlds. Still, my favorite songs from the album don't feature those sounds: Rock You All Around the World and Parental Guidance were were just what I loved Judas Priest for, the one skyrocket elating and the other something between that and ice cold cutting, especially the solo.
Some of the other songs on this album have lost their appeal to me, not because of the synth element but because they are too light. I think there can be a conflict between instant likeability and what people will still want to listen to decades after buying it.
I think the album was also riding the zeitgeist in 1986 but can sound dated today, apart from my two favorite tracks, which are in classic old school Power Metal style and Turbo Lover which is a classic song in its own right. Remember, the revival in the Popularity of Heavy Metal had its way paved for it by Transvision Vamp and was spearheaded by Europe and Bon Jovi. But that in turn created the audience for Thrash Metal that would completely change the direction of Metal development. I actually liked Judas Priest's next album, Ram It Down, a bit less when first got it than I had liked Turbo, which is not to say I didn't like it, but it felt as though instead of leading the field Priest were now imitating their on imitators (especially Motley Crue). Perhaps it felt more dated because it was so similar but time had passed.
Taking up the best sides of Thrash Metal but still keeping their characteristic melodies and vocal style on Painkiller both modernised Judas Priest and was more to my taste. I suppose I most like music that is completely over the top!
To conclude, like you, I consider it far too good an album to be dismissed as Rubbish (especially given its influence on other metal bands) but coming fro the band that also recorded sad Wings Of Destiny, Sin After Sin, Unleashed in The East, Defenders of The Faith and Painkiller, no way does it make my top 5, either. Even if you're looking for a more sing-along album, British Steel has better songs. But I would caveat that by saying one of my favorite songs is on Turbo, and a song with one of my favourite guitar solos.

A standout, deep track on Turbo has got to be "Private Property"...
"You think you're cool and got it all

    I don't believe how you'd conceive
That you're good enough for me
You think you've got it all sewn up
But I'll cut you right down to size
The way I figure you don't exist So you'd better realize..."
    and
    "You live in a fantasy
    I don't even care.
    If you're lookin' for sympathy
    It ain't here !"
... That's 50 lbs of attitude in a 20 lb bag no matter how you look at it !
And Rob may not be showcasing his signature screams on "Private Property", but he sings those lines with the attitude and inflection only Rob can give them !

    My opinion:
If 80s Judas Priest was a five star-restaurant menu, you have great apetizers like British Steel-Point of Entry, the best main dish ever Screraming for Vengeance- Defenders of the Faith and then it comes. The ultimate desert: Turbo!!!
It is so good that is almost a gift from the band to the fans. Everytime I listen to it, I can hear the band say "listen this rare diamond, cause you'never have the opportunity to listen to something similar from us"!
And of course Turbo was the best ending to this era and a great chance for an epic Tour and Live Recording Album/VHS !

Again says the old guy who was there when it happened: Priest weren't the first heavy metal artists to use synths in the 80s, nor was Turbo the first Priest record to use synths. Though it's not as prominent as the synths on Turbo, there are keyboards on Sad Wings of Destiny (where my copy even credits Glenn Tipton as playing "Guitar and keyboards"), Killing Machine/ Hell Bent for Leather, and Stained Class.
In terms of other artists, Dio began releasing keyboard-heavy metal albums in 1983, with Black Sabbath using keyboards on Heaven and Hell, Mob Rules (giving sythns a whole track), and Born Again. Keyboards are central to Deep Purple's sound, and Motley Crue, Def Leppard, and even Venom had used keyboards prior to Turbo's release. (That's not even getting into Van Halen, whose status as "metal" is debatable now but whose inclusion under the heavy metal banner was near-universal in the 70s and 80s.)
We didn't hate Turbo because of the keyboards.
We hated it because it looked and sounded like weak-ass pop-friendly MTV crap at a time when bands like Metallica and Slayer were redefining what metal could be.

Now what Turbo's got going for it..."Private Property", "Out In The Cold", "Wild Nights, Hot and Crazy Days", "Turbo Lover" and "Locked In" which are wicked songs no matter what people say about the guitar synths and "lame" or "commercial" songs.

I don’t consider KMFDM metal. They are industrial. Many of the guitar riffs are sampled. Like the song that uses Angel of Death. I saw them open for Ministry in 1988. Nothing metal about the live show. They were good. Unfortunately for them, Ministry with Ogre from Skinny Puppy, Mike Scaccia and the chain link fence completely killed it. It is one of my top shows.
A year after KMFDM formed The Young Gods from Switzerland were sampling heavy riffs. I have no idea what kind of sampler they used starting out but it required cassettes to play.

Recently finished Rob's book and, along with other things, I don't feel he was completely honest with what Turbo was about. I genuinely think it was a calculated effort to be more commercial and make more cash., something which JP had been trying to do since they dropped the poetry and art of Stained Class for Killing Machine. They felt that synth was the was forward, commercially, as that is what was doing well in other musical genres, and hoped to get in on what they thought would be a new craze before the other metal bands.
I don't dislike the album, but it doesn't have a single song that really gets my blood going the way most JP albums do. 'Hot For Love' is a guilty pleasure though.
Rob also mentions in his book that the lyrics weren't up to snuff either. Whilst this is definitely partly due to his headspace at the time, what with the tragic death of his then-boyfriend, along with addiction and other issues, but I'm pretty sure the other members, whom were also contributors to lyrics, were wanting songs that were extremely simple, watered down and catchy, again, for the mainstream.
Another thing that surprises me is how he mentions in his book that his voice was significantly better during the production of Turbo, as he had recently given up alcohol, among more powerful drugs. And yet, it sounds more strained and subdued here than even on Defenders. It isn't until Ram it Down that he really starts to sound like the Metal God (again).

    • @MetalPilgrim
      @MetalPilgrim  2 роки тому

Totally agree about the voice. One thing though: I think he was actually talking about the Fuel For Life Tour, no? I'm not 100% positive, have to double check it though, but if that's the case then he's 100% right, his voice was amazing on that one

This was the album that made me turn my back on Priest in 1986. Turbo Lover is a good track with a great solo, but too many of the songs are ridiculous eg. Parental Guidance. At that point I just gave up on traditional metal for good and went to the heavier pastures of thrash metal and hardcore punk. When 1986 brought us great albums like Master of Puppets, Reign In Blood, Peace Sells.., Pleasure to Kill, Game Over, The Age of Quarrel, Convicted, I just couldn't stay interested in bands that were heading for more commercial pastures. I just couldn't relate to what Priest were about now. And Judas Priest just looked silly as hell with the hair metal look. Just look at the pictures of K.K. from that tour. I'm over it now but I still never put this album on. I like Turbo Lover, Out in the Cold, and Locked in and that's about it. BUT it's still a better album than Ram It Down which is easily Judas Priest's worst album.
