- 60 years ago this month the debut of the Stones' first long player record. After a string of singles that brought them success after success the Stones finally put together their first proper album. What are your favorite songs from this album? Best debut album EVER! Favourite track? That's easy, 'Walking The Dog', the closest we ever got to a Mick and Brian duet!

@@HangFireStonesPodcast His rough, rasping singing voice was very different to his polite and mannered speaking voice! Reminds me a bit of Dave Davies' voice whenever he sang early Kinks songs (check out their version of Tommy Tucker's 'Long Tall Shorty'!).

I’m gonna say it, because it’s true, BEST debut album ever, and the moody album cover (UK), without the band name, really makes it a statement ! Vinyl is a must to get the full impact ! And it’s been 60 years, WOW !! 😀👏

The Rolling Stones first record is really great. Back when Brian was an integral part of the band and they all honed in on the merging blues with rock and roll. I just listened to it the other day, actually. And I will listen to it again shortly! I have the US version. Thanks Justin!

Just in addition what you said about the great, bold cover. As far as I know, it was the first LP Cover of a band without a title or the name of the band. Just the dark picture and in that time, from unknown, long hairy, not smiling men. For me it's art!

My favorite band since I was 9 years old (fact!) and I’m 60 now. My first album was Hot Rocks but I have to admit, I barely played disc number one with their earlier stuff. Disc number two with the late 60’s - early 70’s classics are what caught my ear. I loved the guitars and in your face rebellious vibe these songs were oozing with. Still my “go-to” music all these years later 🤘

I bought the US release and been a fan since. "Little By Little" is my favorite track
I love it too, even though it's basically a re-write of Jimmy Reed's 'Shame, Shame, Shame'.
It took me a while to shake off the Shame, Shame, Shame vibe but it's simply irresistible!

@HangFireStonesPodcast I dig your perspective and vibe. There is no doubt this debut is far beyond doing covers. Their version of I just wanna make love to you is fantastic and the early original Tell Me is a darn good early 60s tune that showcases Keith and Mick's ability to craft a song together.
Such a great debut album! I prefer England Newest Hitmakers to the UK release just due to the fact that it has Not Fade Away as the opening, absolutely killer track, along with Route 66, I Just Want To Make Love To You, and Tell Me!

Hi Justin, glad you are giving this album a much more positive review than you did a few weeks ago on the London Years video that you made with Scott. This has to be one of the best debut albums I have ever heard from any band. Definitely in my top 3 Stones albums of all time, maybe my number one.

For a first album it just has so much attitude and they seem to approach the songs much more aggressively than the originals which probably served them well when they played them live.

It's their most underrated album ever and shows what a great cover band they were at the beginning. If I ever make a list of my top 10 Stones covers, at least half would be from this album. Interesting how they turned I Just Want to Make Love to You from a slow blues into a rave-up. Buddy Holly's Not Fade Away was a toned down version of the Bo Diddley beat, the Stones put Bo's raunch into it. Acoustic guitars never rocked harder. Carol blows the live (Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out) version away. One other thing: Not Fade Away replaced Mona (I Need You Baby) on the US version. It was released in the US on The Rolling Stones, Now! in 1965.
I wonder if they were instead influenced by Chuck Berry's mid-tempo version of 'I Just Want To Make Love To You', though that is very different from the RS version too!

Also, I would add a exhortation to purchase the Mono versions of the early albums. Way the Stones should be heard. Not according to me but Keith himself.

Best debut album ever. I do prefer the USA versions of the early albums so I think Not Fade Away is the better opener. Although I hate the title of the USA version,so I just call it The Rolling Stones.
The thing I don't like about the USA version is that they dropped 'Mona'! Would've made more sense to drop 'Tell Me' instead, as it sounds out of place with its Keith harmonies (all the other song's backing vocals are by Brian and Bill!).
I own both versions, American and English. It's one of my preferred Stones' albums. Love 12 x 5 too. Decca should do a double album with them ( the first and the second albums) 'cause they have the same aura, I think. Pure rhythm & blues. One may say I'm crazy (In fact I am, lol) but this is the best phase of the band to me. Of course I love all of them. (Greetings from Brazil, guys! I saw them at the Maracanã and at the Copacabana beach.)
I may just like the American version best because that's what I grew up with. As far as best phase of the Stones, I can't be objective about The Rolling Stones as I'm just a huge fanboy and I think every album by them is a masterpiece lol.

Great album i still put it on quite regularly a great introduction , album wise i then skip to Aftermath.
I have always thought it odd they are separated as UK and US versions when it makes more sense to label International and US .

Definitely. I’m 65 years old and I’ve attended at least one concert of every US tour, starting in 1978 with the Some Girls tour at JFK Stadium in Phili.
