Boudicca.
After the death of King Prasutagus of the Iceni in East Anglia ~AD 60, the conquering Romans decided to revoke Icenian independence and seize Icenian territory. His wife, Queen Boudicca (or Boadicea) was flogged and her two daughters were raped.
In revenge, Boudicca led a brutal attack against the occupying Roman settlements. Burning down 🔥 the towns of Camulodunum (Colchester), Londinium and Verulamium (St Albans), and destroying the Roman Ninth Legion.
In response, Roman governor, Suetonius Paullinus sent two Legions to quell the uprising. Facing defeat, Boudicca is said to have taken her own life and according to popular legend is buried beneath platform 9 of King’s Cross station in London. 🚂
Boudicca remains forever a British national heroine and a symbol of the struggle for justice and independence.
