It’s not just JB, the whole of Malaysia, except the highlands, is much hotter than Singapore. That’s because their towns and cities have lesser trees and not landscaped. They have less towering buildings as the land is large and widely spaced out. Walking on the streets of Malaysia can really darken your skin. That’s why the Malaysians are more tanned than Singaporeans. The islands like Penang, Tioman, Langkawi are much more scorching hot and I got sun burnt even though I use sunscreens. 😅 In big countries, getting from one place to another is more inconvenient and time consuming if they don’t have MRT. Owning a car is the most efficient way to get around. That’s why most Malaysians drive and you don’t see many people walking on the streets outside the city areas except the silly foreigners! 😅Some Malaysian households have 2-3 cars and motorcycles parked at their porches, as the family prefer to drive around since their cars are way cheaper. I feel it’s best to retire in your own country if you have lived most of your life in Singapore as nothing beats the familiarity and sense of belonging. Think about the flush of emotions that encompass you on arrival at Changi Airport whenever you return home from your overseas trips. In your heart, you probably chant out “It’s great to be home”. That’s exactly what I mean. This sense of belonging is so comforting and re-assuring. At least, in my own country during my old age, I know I’m going to be well taken care of and enjoy the rights and privileges of my citizenship here. In another country, you’re just a guest, worse, face discrimination even if you may not be aware of! 😅
I went to Jb a few times, I don’t agree the food is better than Singapore, just cheaper. The best food in Malaysia is in KL or Penang, definitely not JB. I dont’t know about JB but when I was staying in KL, national parks there are not safe to walk at, many motorcycle gangs like to gather there. I felt very unsafe even in broad daylight. When I came back to Singapore, the feeling of walking free and safe even at night at parks is something I would never give up
Usually, people in Malaysia own cars and don't walk around much. Some families have a household income of less than SGD 2,500 per month but still own two Toyota cars, a beautiful landed double-storey house, and have three schooling children, as the cost of living in Malaysia is cheap and salaries are not high.

Mr Loo, you mentioned you have setup a company in Malaysia. Will you have an episode to talk about what is required to set one up and the cost of maintaining it to fulfil the tax and compliance requirements? Do you need a local to partner with you etc? Thank you!

Good insight. Having stayed in Penang for 20+ years, I fully agree with Mr Loo. I had started to shuttle between Malaysia and Singapore (staying a few months in each place each time) since about 3 years ago. It is not sustainable based on my personal experience; too tiring and one cannot commit long term to some activity/plan in each place. If one reaches the stage of old age when independent mobility is an issue, one won't want to live in Malaysia.
Great that you have started a nomadic way of living. (Not too great if its not in retirement 😅). I am also planning to do so when I retire in another year or two. It is definitely not going to be cheaper given the travelling & rental costs every other month, but it'll hardly be boring I should think. And not confined to JB, but to shuttle around Malaysia & the regional countries using our home as a base to recuperate and plan. I guess when it gets tiring, one can just slow down & holiday less. 😅 Maybe in doing so I'll appreciate Singapore more ... and settle into my final resting place. 😂 (I guess most would want to come back eventually)....
I don’t understand how straddling between 2 houses is money saving 😂 got to pay for and maintain 2 houses. Mr Loo, if I were u, I will just get a nice big condo in Singapore. My children will visit me more often if my condo compound is fun and have lots of space to run around. My grandma stayed in a cluster landed house with condo facilities. Every Sunday, all her grandchildren visit and gather at her house. I am very close to my cousins as we all grew up together, spending all Sundays together.

Katak di bawa tempurung! Please come to JB and feel it for yourself. Don't simply make comments without the facts. JB is not like 20 years ago. We didn't force you to retire in JB/Malaysia. It is a good gesture and free will. Tks.
Malaysia is big. Why only retire in Johor only. Why only focus on trees roads and weather. Here we don't necessarily live in flats apartments like bird nests so only disturbing mentally. Here easily own big houses with all amenities available with big lands so gardening or sweating out in yr garden keeps you healthy mentally. Also here so much food and choices but be disciplined. If overeating it surely shortens yr lives. Why kill yrself. Control what you eat n stay healthy.
Thank you for your very good upfront alert especially on safety & security. Also not to forget the yearly heavy flooding and the notorious traffic & drivers' attitude there... big, heavy vehicles will not give way to smaller vehicles.
@@Jaymore639 Might as well learn driving over there, maybe easier to pass. a mode of transport is needed to live there, at least a car or bike is more affordable there, when in Rome live as the romans do. Be it Rts or Hsr, in the future it is going to be very crowded, right now woodlands mrt and tel is crowded with trains going to the city while those towards woodlands north is sparse. Likewise for je and boon lay mrt. These 2 towns are flooded with people.

Dear Mr Loo. I'm sure many people are aware of your wealth. Considering your high profile, I don't think it's advisable for you to frequent Johor Bahru (JB) due to safety concerns.
Imagine some criminals also watching this video, they will target to kidnap him and his wife. End up have to do final youtube video. They even know where he stays.
I did stayed in my friends' house in JB 25 yrs ago..lt is true JB is really hot and the air is quite stifling at night.....tks for you good advice....swamhiji
All your points are good and valid. The issue is that this is a rich man problem, or businessman like you, not for ordinary folks. Rich and certain earners will have these FIRST WORLD problems Other than that no way. lol
Good for you. Singapore need more people like you to earn more, pay more taxes to fund the ageing population health care and foreigners education. Well done! Good and faithful citizen. 👍
If you are retiring, why do you restrict your options of only staying in JB. Do you need to commute everyday back to SG? Retired ... you can stay anywhere else cheaper and safer. If you expand your choices it can easily find a place to stay that meets your criteria. If cool weather you are looking for look at places such as Cameron Highlands or Genting; if you like beaches - Langkawi (Tax Free Haven with beautiful beaches.)

Without any valid MM2H or valid residential pass, we are limited to 90days per year to MY, any stay beyond that is at the mercy of the immigration officer.
Those people who bought properties in Malaysia will soon realize they cannot even stay in their own house. But still have to continue paying property taxes! LOL.
@@anglo-saxonconnor817 They obviously did not want retirees but tourists, their MM2H is unbelievably strict and expensive basically they are saying we want your money but we don't want you to live here long term and profit from our properties.
done the weekend home thing for more than 10 years. glad to have sold my JB prop. the biggest gripe is crossing the borders. traffic, small lanes, inconsiderate drivers etc. not good for karma.

As a Sgrean working in JB. 1) True, JB is hotter then SG 2) Food depends and subjective. But once you stay and live in foreign country you will tend to think about cost. Cannot be evevryday eating seafood dish also. Been telling people that, for me malaysia street burger is the best but if prata sg is the best. 3) Durian SG is nicer to my taste price depens on where you go. KG durian is also nice and cheaper. 4) To socialise - if you are friendly and have that energy to move around then its good but if not better get a hobby 5) Tax is complicated especially for an employment pass. If any kind words or advice pls do so. 6) Not sure how can a person say SG passport is strong when an sg going Aus also need to apply visa, getting work permit in Malaysia also very hard (at least according to the company) 7) Agreed on the security, need to improve. 8) Work ethics, very laid back. Too many of the (CABLE).
It is still too close to Singapore which will still eventually be swamp by singaporeans and johore will quickly turn into the same as Singapore in terms of living cost. To avoid this effect and enjoy a very good retirement must move further up north. Can be Malaysia, Thailand or even into yunnan if needed. The higher you shift up the more beautiful the olaces are actually if people have travelled before.
Want to live longer eat 70% full and everything in moderation. If you are 70years old but have a body of a 90 years old, better think twice retiring in Malaysia especially if you need to go in and out of S'pore n Malaysia very frequently. Mr Loo did brought up several valued reasons for us to consider. 👍
Every trip I made to JB, I will come back sick. The latest one was dengue. Damn it. If it isn’t for work, I won’t cross the causeway! 🙄 Food in JB is not that great and priced for Singaporean. Kena ketuk big time!
i as Malaysian totally agree with you. to my fellow friend from sg, dont come malaysia. it not safe for you and family. go to batam or other country ok. malaysia really appreciate it😂
On your point on food and overeat. It's just a phase , once you stay there over a period of time you will have better control especially craving to cook n eat fresh produce in a healthy way.
Hello Mr Loo, I am wondering if you can do a video on what you think would be the potential impact of RTS line on Sg economy? In particular I think property prices will be affected because Malaysians will be less willing to rent in Sg. What do you think?
My personal thoughts are as follows. Will travel JB or beyond upon RTS completion n in operation by end of 2026. Then I will use the convenient method to go over for leisure. And of course making use of the exchange rate to maximise my lifestyle. Then after that go back home to Singapore n sleep peacefully.
JB food is affordable if you earn in S$. If you are Singaporean working in Sg, you don’t go out to eat as you would be working. You go JB, you probably not working there so you will go shopping with family and go for food. You feel relax as you are not working.
As we grow older we need to get a domestic helper . You will be surprised how much you have to pay to government to hire a foreign domestic helper and this cost is tied to one individual helper. If she decides to leave you start all over again paying another high fees to government and agent. So those thinking of staying in big bungalows have to factor in this cost. As for MM2H you have to pay agents RM40,000 just to bring your application to Putrajaya and submit. Given the newly revised scheme the take up rate has been extremely low with conditions governing the scheme evolving all the time so participants have to cope with these frequent changes when they need to renew their visas every 5 years

The problem is when you are old and not being able to drive to and from jb sg for health check up coz we dont want to inconvenient our family in singapore to fetch us and send us back in JB ..their public transport in JB is a nightmare..to buy groceries etc is challenging without own transport
Singapore cools its city through a combination of innovative strategies that go beyond greenery and shaded walkways. Green buildings, district cooling systems and employs smart urban design to enhance natural airflow. Light-colored surfaces are used extensively to reflect heat, while water features and cool pavements help regulate temperatures. Additionally, Singapore reduces car dependency by prioritizing public transport, cutting down on emissions and heat from vehicles. Despite these efforts, many still complain and prefer JB.
Singapore is pedestrain friendly but not car friendly cos most people use public transport...JB is car friendly but not pedestrain friendly cos everybody use car/motorcycle....
The International Living's Annual Global Retirement Index 2024 listed Malaysia as among the 10 best places to retire, surpassing France.. well deserved recognition. Tks
Yes is true. My Uncle retire in JB last time. A few years into his Retirement, he got violently murdered. To this day they still couldn't find his Head. 🙂
YES you are correct. I am frequent visitor in KL and Penang too. Yes walking is not encouraged in day time as there are less trees and no walkway. The estate design kind of trap the heat within the living space Penang has more trees thus is more cooling than KL and JB
Food in other part of malaysia is much better than JB. Retirement straddling between Singapore and JB is a better option when u still fit and healthy. But when getting older and unable to drive...that is a different scenario.
JB is not even as mature as Ipoh, Perak (chinese town) who have lots of food eateries as Singapore and mature in every residential towns connected with MRT city rail convenience. Its a cultural mix Malays and Chinese and many public facilities are not culturally build ideally for Chinese but for Malays and area to one area is far and all citizens have to drive. But grocer wise a win situation, cheaper. And in terms of public security is not as best compare to Singapore. I disagree when you comparing the difference of the weather. I have travel both Singapore and Johor don't feel any differences.
Best Malaysia food is Ipoh, KL, Penang. Hotter in Johor due to Geography. Malaysia has bigger land mass. Singapore is surrounded by water. City planning for pedestrians to walk in Malaysia is NIL. They expect every family to own at least 2 cars. Not a fan of durians so to some it is a non-issue. Sensible eating the right type of food is a matter of self control and developing good habits. CRIME is a big negative in JB. Especially when the victim is a Chinese Singaporean, JB police are not interested. Beware PAS becoming ruling party later. Ultra islamist will abuse Chinese in Malaysia.
Of all the cities in Malaysia KL is the coolest, cooler by 1.5 - 2 degrees celcius compared to other towns and cities due to big greenery, lakes and parks. People mostly walk or exercise in the gym because all condos and stratified landed homes have gym facilities. For outdoor, people walk in the park in the early morning or late evening when it is not hot and sunny. Food can be controlled. Now, young people are very health conscious and eat heathily. Plenty of fruits and vegetables. For Christians not much of a problem. It is big social circle in the church. For Buddhist it will be with group of senior citizens who exercise daily every morning in the park. MM2H visa is more complicated and expensive: There are 56,000 active pass holders from MM2H. Not a huge participants: China - 24,765 (44%) Australia - 9,265 South Korea - 4,940 Japan - 4,733 Bangladesh - 3,604 UK - 2,234 Taiwan - 1,000 US - 1,000 India - 1,000 Singapore - 1,000 Safety, no other countries can match.

Very informative and eye opening for many.Thank you
Actually those who do not drive should not consider retirement in Malaysia.
RTS coming
Got private hired Grab ?
Grab is quite affordable.but it u are a car lover like me then it’s a ideal place
@@Jaymore639 Might as well learn driving over there, maybe easier to pass. a mode of transport is needed to live there, at least a car or bike is more affordable there, when in Rome live as the romans do. Likewise for je and boon lay mrt. These 2 towns are flooded with people.

Safety is one reason good enough to stay away from it
Living in sg is good. No need to retire in jb
As a Johorean I absolutely agree. Just stay put in your own country, please don't criticize JB.
@@habibahjaffar4387biasalah bos. typical Singaporean. they think jb must same as singapore on everything.
If cool weather you are looking for look at places such as Cameron Highlands or Genting; if you like beaches - Langkawi (Tax Free Haven with beautiful beaches.)

i don't know about Genting but definitely NOT Cameron Highlands. I have a friend who lived in Cameron Highlands and the traffic jam is horrendous now. The road is jammed with lots of tourist bus and the road has not been upgraded to take on the new traffic.
Don’t just move there for retirement, please go and apply for citizenship.

Without any valid MM2H or valid residential pass, we are limited to 90days per year to MY, any stay beyond that is at the mercy of the immigration officer.
Yes yes yes. I spoke of this countless times before. They think retiring in Malaysia is like going to a shopping centre. Lol
Those people who bought properties in Malaysia will soon realize they cannot even stay in their own house. But still have to continue paying property taxes! LOL.
exactly! how to "straddle" like he says?? 🤣🤣🤣
Go anywhere also must have money, if U insufficient go anywhere also difficult 😢😂
Straddling means must live in 2 properties, then cannot rent one out already.

I think I have to agree with what you shared in the video, however if given a choice only to stay in JB or Singapore, I think the economic considerations favours JB greatly.

Really?
It is trees. Singapore has planted countless trees that help to cool and filter the environment.
As a Sgrean working in JB.
1) True, JB is hotter then SG
2) Food depends and subjective.
4) To socialise - if you are friendly and have that energy to move around then its good but if not better get a hobby
5) Tax is complicated especially for an employment pass. If any kind words or advice pls do so.
6) Not sure how can a person say SG passport is strong when an sg going Aus also need to apply visa, getting work permit in Malaysia also very hard (at least according to the company)
7) Agreed on the security, need to improve.
Kena ketuk big time!
i as Malaysian totally agree with you. to my fellow friend from sg, dont come malaysia. it not safe for you and family. go to batam or other country ok. malaysia really appreciate it😂
I think Kuching is many times better than JB.
Difference is a plane ticket as opposed to a car travelling to Causeway
On your point on food and overeat. It's just a phase , once you stay there over a period of time you will have better control especially craving to cook n eat fresh produce in a healthy way.
if you are on a wheelchair, wonder how are you going to move around in JB?
I am not going to be on a wheel chair.
@@1m65 Talking abt retirement. That means old already. Need wheelchair or not is not dictated by you but by your health.
Hello Mr Loo, I am wondering if you can do a video on what you think would be the potential impact of RTS line on Sg economy? In particular I think property prices will be affected because Malaysians will be less willing to rent in Sg. What do you think?
I agree. Sure have impact on rentals
I think those HDB renting out to Malaysians will be impacted greatly
My personal thoughts are as follows. Will travel JB or beyond upon RTS completion n in operation by end of 2026. Then I will use the convenient method to go over for leisure. And of course making use of the exchange rate to maximise my lifestyle. Then after that go back home to Singapore n sleep peacefully.
Yes that is a nice lifestyle also!
Total agree 👍. I realise very hot in JB. And enjoy Singapore benefits and short trip to JB for fun is enough.
A lot of scam and crimes in Malaysia.
I read CNA & The STdaily also reported lots of scams going.. true or not?
Thank you for your great advise.
Given the newly revised scheme the take up rate has been extremely low with conditions governing the scheme evolving all the time so participants have to cope with these frequent changes when they need to renew their visas every 5 years
Yes the greenery do help in bring down temperature. Every tree has a cooling power of an average aircondition.
Mr Loo, you are stressed by Singaporeans to make this video?
No, as I said, the video is inspired by the news article.
Why do you say stressed? What he said is true
dont think the food in jb is very nice.
You haven’t try enough of it
@1m65 some were disappointing
Another reason : Ringgit recovering, so costs of living will close up to SG!
I wonder if those Malaysians working in sg will vote for PN if Anwar did a great job and ringgit keeps on strengthening against Sing dollars.
sigh. most of the reasons here can be overcome. making a big deal.

Retiring in JB depend on how much you earn & what you really want in life.

Now malaysia things no more as cheap as before.
I prefer Singapore!
Singapore is pedestrain friendly but not car friendly cos most people use public transport...JB is car friendly but not pedestrain friendly cos everybody use car/motorcycle....
Medical support is a big consideration..no subsidies in JB when u fall ill and in emergency
jb private healthcare is so much more affordable than singapore's
Valid points brought up. Please share where to eat good durian in JB, Mr Loo
Ha ha…. Durian very bad for health, good for the spirit!

SG is an island therefore not as hot as JB during the day. At night inland JB will be cooler than SG.
YES you are correct. I am frequent visitor in KL and Penang too. Yes walking is not encouraged in day time as there are less trees and no walkway. The estate design kind of trap the heat within the living space
Penang has more trees thus is more cooling than KL and JB
The heat is significantly higher.... I hiding in Aircon most of the time
Food in other part of malaysia is much better than JB. Retirement straddling between Singapore and JB is a better option when u still fit and healthy. But when getting older and unable to drive...that is a different scenario.
Get a driver when you are old.
ARE YOU PAID FOR THIS ARTICLE ⁉️
Ultra islamist will abuse Chinese in Malaysia.
it depends on where you stay in JB.... impian emas is very cool as it has a lot of trees everywhere.
Earn in SGD, lives in JB. Doable. Earn in RM and lives in JB, mati lah,
For senior citizens spore is accessible everywhere for medical care unlike JB.
MM2H visa is more complicated and expensive:
There are 56,000 active pass holders from MM2H. Not a huge participants:
China - 24,765 (44%)
Australia - 9,265
South Korea - 4,940
Japan - 4,733
Bangladesh - 3,604
UK - 2,234
Taiwan - 1,000
US - 1,000
India - 1,000
Singapore - 1,000
Safety, no other countries can match.
