Most sprinters without fins don't take a breath in this race. So why are these guys swimming with their snorkels?
it is mandatory, and is regulated by CMAS rules. participation without a snorkel is not allowed. Even though athletes do use snorkels, most likely they don't breathe during 50m.

Interesting that they're only a couple of seconds faster than normal swimming 50m times. Has there been any crossover from traditional swimmers to this discipline?
The world record is around 7 seconds faster than the freestyle record I think.
But 3 seconds can be 2 bodies of distance

Yes obviously, just look at their strokes - its the exact same as "normal" swimmers except with fins.
Just b/c I was wondering, I searched up the first American (Drew Modrov) and he swam for Auburn in the 2010s, goes a 22 LCM 50 free (elite but not Olympic final).
So every single one of these guys are elite swimmers. If we had someone like Caeleb Dressel he could probably go 17 or 16 in fins.
@@stingyaviation I think we would definitely see some 17s if the very best gave it a shot. Less confident about seeing a 16 for a variety of reasons...two feet forward start, required snorkel, heavier waves, and also just uncertain a world class swimmers fin vs no fin delta is as large as some people tend to think.
