One dalek managed to knock out the power to the entire eastern seaboard, download the entire internet, and murder a small army without a scratch. So in summary run.
I really enjoyed how the daleks were handled in the first few seasons of the new show, however I’ve noticed a steady decline wth their use during Moffats run especially. Davie built up the daleks as a sort of be all end all villain that the doctor despised so much, he’d be willing to genocide to get rid of them for good. He hardly joked around when they were present. They were also always portrayed in a weakened state due to the time war, which was used to explain why they hadn’t conquered the universe. They were simply biding their time until they could regain their strength at which point the doctor would stop them from doing so. However in the newer seasons, they are made to be little more than soup cans rolling around, with characters making constant jokes about them, new and unneeded tid bits being mentioned that destroy their previous lore, them being easily defeated and worst of all, a literal dalek empire existing and the doctor not doing a thing about it. I don’t think we’ll ever get something like that scene where the characters actually begin to cry and hug their loved ones at the mere sound of “Exterminate.”

People can tend to underestimate how powerful and hideously dangerous the Daleks really are within the Doctor Who universe/whoniverse, at a glance, if they don't know much about the show and just write them off as weird, pepper pot looking tin cans that have unusual voices. But that is precisely why the Daleks were such a menace to the Time Lords to begin with. The loftier elites among Time Lord civilisation, initially underestimated their true potential. Bear in mind always, that at their height of power, the Gallifreyan Time Lords were, effectively, the masters of the universe, via their exquisite mastery of time travel in the time vortex. Though the entire tone and purpose of Doctor Who, is very different to a lot of other sci-fi and fantasy dramas, the truth is that reading in between the lines, in spite of all the goofiness and the rated PG plots with limited tip toes into horror themes and the more disturbing, the Daleks and Time Lords and the war they fought across time and space, proves that the Daleks in particular could be a terrifying opponent for virtually any other sci-fi civilisation find themselves in a conflict with. One of my favourite fictional civilisations from one of my other loves within sci-fi stories, has to be the Forerunner civilisation in HALO. Arguably a Type 3 Kardashev civilisation at their peak and a force to be reckoned with, possessing astonishing means. They fought the Flood bravely for 300 years, and lost; but also won in another context, in that their final strategic flourish of activity, largely through Offensive Bias, helped to stop the Flood from destroying the HALO arrays as well as stopping them from killing the entire galaxy (though most of it was dead already thanks to the nightmarish Flood) The Forerunners, for perspective, would crush the Star Wars galaxy with consummate ease to an extent to which it becomes pretty appalling. However, compared to the Time Lords? The Forerunners are to them what the human race is deemed in the eyes of the Forerunners; plucky upsets and ultimately unforgivable rivals. Time Lords and Last Great Time War-Daleks, are probably the height of power in Doctor Who. 10 Billion LGTW-era Daleks descended upon and surrounded Gallifrey at the end of the war. For perspective, just ONE LGTW-era Dalek could have clearly destroyed 21st Century human civilisation if the Doctor didn't intervene. Given more appropriate and useful resources, they would have ravaged most rivals in battle. To the Forerunners, Dalek technology would be beyond them (though Forerunner megastructure engineering still semms far superior) Daleks just knew how to hurt, manipulate, destroy and kill (or as they would say, ''EXTERMINATE!". They are tragic in a way, but too monstrous to have pity for. The only ones stronger than them were the Time Lords, and they overwhelmed most of them, too. It was a nightmare spiralling out of control. Type V K-civiilisations clashing in all out warfare within mercy. The Daleks are the true biggest threat in sci-fi, they could, as the villains. Few can fight the Daleks at their best, and win (except for the Doctor ;) ) Many saw the Forerunners as Gods in HALO; well, to the Forerunners, the Time Lords would seem them as children playing a game they don't really understand! 1 Dalek could slowly but surely conquer 21st century Earth. Credit where its due for the Time Lords to hold out against the Daleks for as long as they did with limited forces, shows their powerful is immense too. The Daleks lost as they peeked too soon and never saw what was coming. But everyone lost that war really.
loved the video honestly glad to know more about the origins of the daleks since the current run of doctor who didn't go to in depth on that aspect cant wait to hear more about the doctor who universe in depth
Awesome video! Love Doctor Who and you did the Daleks justice just like the Weeping Angels. I would love if you did a video on the Makuta from the BIONICLE franchise.
This is a good explanation that doesn't just go 'haha, they look like dustbins, they are shit', but at the same time I feel like there wasn't enough emphasis put on their technological superiority. At the height of their power, galaxy busting was pretty trivial for them if they so desired (not to mention the Reality Bomb which not only had the power to destroy *a* universe but *every* universe), and the fact they fought the Time Lords to a practical victory was so astounding because the Time Lords themselves were so powerful that they could change the laws of physics and created impossible devices capable of unimaginable things, all of which the Daleks survived. Add in the fact that they can time travel and exist outside of reality itself for as long as they want in Void Ships that even the Time Lords thought were impossible and you have yourself one of the most OP sci-fi races every imagined.
The thing is at their peek they were literally able to make tardis’s shield(which was an incredibly strong) into nothing. Like even the doctor said they could make them into literally just a wooden box.
