Great video and really relevant. Too many people get steered by influencers into more and more expensive cars. My son would LOVE something like this as to exploit it, you still need to put some effort in, unlike many modern turbo cars. RWD is a whole new ball game to and as you say, if the driver “doesn’t go crazy”, they ll learn invaluable skills from how differently they move on the road vs a FWD etc. I’m old so my second car was a Mk2 Escort, but this BMW would be a superb ownership prospect, that lad has chosen well.
My Son has just done a similar thing, his first car was a 2010 Fiesta 1.6 TDCI and he now has a 2014 BMW 116d MSport 3 door and he love's it. I am glad he is getting the chance to experince something different and it's very nice for a 2nd car.
This is a good shout for a second car. I remember considering 120i’s and even the 116/118i as a second car amongst many other things but ended up with an R56 Mini Cooper S, which was great fun. Now got an E92 330i.
At 20 I brought myself a E92 335d and still have it to this day , that thing has taught me so much about driving it’s unreal
Definitely not.. STAY AWAY from this engine.. Get the 125i or 130i instead!
116 and 120i are engines everyone should stay away from

I remember going from first car to my second. Went from a standard 1997 1.2 corsa, to a 1.6 focus with all the nice extras.

2nd car was an 11 plate 3 series msport full extras, and i still got it. 320d mapped stage 2, thing is rapid for what it is.
I would have hated to have been 20 yrs old and trapped in PCP - this is perfect. Chop and change at will - makes perfect sense.
My second car was (still is) a mk2.5 Ford Focus 2.0 petrol. Very similar to this 116i and perfect power for a 2nd car. I have a shortlist for my next car and its between a BMW 120i e87 / Ford Fiesta ST150 / SEAT Leon 2.0TDI 170 / Renault Clio RS200 / Honda Civic Type-R FN2
got this as my second car in red. but i found out about 6 months after buying it that it was a 2.0 litre even though it was labelled a 116i, apparently the ones made after 2009 were likes this?
And you can get 116i msport you can get loads of specs and extras on the 116i it’s only the engine that is entry level . I did get the ES but I added the msport spec and extras like multi fictional steering wheel and heated seats
In 2007 my second car was a 1994 Renault 19 1.4l tank
Had a 2009 116i and it was hands down the worst car I have ever owned and probably will ever own, catastrophic engine failure, then blamed on ecu problems 6k later still not great and no one would touch it!
Also had to fork out for a brake servo which was 1k which were later recalled after I burnt all ties to the car 😂
You bought a lemon bud. Have had mine since December 2021 and all I’ve done to it is an abs ring and sensor change and a starter motor. Mind you I have the pre facelift 2006 one which has a different engine to the one you had.

@@naliinsuthakaran2967 yep it’s the N45 engine. They stopped using it due to emissions. It’d been developed alongside the maligned N46 but without a Valvetronic and was only Euro 4 petrol so they had to stop using it as emissions got stricter. The 2 litre variant has some decent power and once you change the factory chain and guides, it’s a very reliable engine when maintenance is kept up to date.
@@Kofi_Mensahs_BurnerAccount agreed, I have a pre lci 116i, it's slow as a snail but it gets the job done and it's quite reliable

@@igcommenthub for reliability, I'd reckon to go for a Toyota or Honda. BMW's reliability depends a lot on how it was maintained by previous owners and parts wear out over time. I had to spend an extra $2K to fix leaks due to wear and tear otherwise a great little car!

Was gunna say my mates son has only just passed and he got a 118d convertible with full leather and 80k on clock for 4800.he’s only 19
and got his insurance for 1900 quid and he lives in a crap area
more than 7 years later, still driving mine and don't think of changing it
I had two of these 116i sport 2009 plate 2nd one chain snapped went through oil sump £1500 to fix good car but timing chains are 💩
Not worth it due to the maintenance costs for what it is. Low power low spec car with thigh repair costs.
Got a 120i m sport e81 not great tbh drinks pertrol engine light comes on randomly 🤣 it Does drive nice tho quiet as a mouse at 80mph sticks to the road like glue on b roads
am i wrong that i think these you can just remap them to almost double the power it might be the wrong engine

no its the n13 ones from 2012-2015 you can they have turbos and can hit 220bhp stage 1
A 2011 BMW 116i is not 134hp. It's 121hp.
So my car was a non msport ES
Now it’s newly a msport SE haha

No these are crap and unreliable. I drive all sorts of cars for a living and there just abit shit being honest. And everyone I've known to have one has had problems.
