    This was a live recording at Folsom prison. However, he never went to prison... only jail.

      True, he was jailed a few times overnight and actually once for trespassing and picking flowers . Good thing we got the law enforcers to keep these dangerous people off the street. LOL. Haggard actually was in the joint for 2 years. San Quentin for attempted burglary.

    Check out merle Haggard, he was at Folsom prison as a inmate and saw this performance. So when he got out, he wrote songs and actually became the only true outlaw country music star

    John's first prison concert was at San Quentin. He struggled hard with his record company to let him do that.
    This show is also on record. The original album is titled "At San Quentin".
    One of the inmates in the audience was the great Merle Haggard...later to become one of country music's greatest performers and a legend.

      @Dag R. Johnson: Wrong! Johnny Cash's first prison concert album was "Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison" ( 1968; ) followed, a year later, by "Johnny Cash at San Quentin" ( 1969. )

      @@dagr.johnsen2164 Wrong again! Johnny Cash did indeed inspire Merle Haggard, but - I never said he did so in 1969. Johnny Cash had been doing concerts ( ? - maybe benefit concerts ) at various prisons for many years BEFORE his big break in getting one recorded for an album ( which was 1968's "Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison." ) One of those earlier concerts was at San Quentin, where Merle Haggard was serving time at that time. So, yeah - that would have been around 1958, or maybe 1959 ( because Merle Haggard was released from prison in 1960, according to the bio. info. about him. )

    Some of his songs were written while on drugs and after his arrest for narcotics. No record labels wanted to touch him because of his addiction, but he recorded a record live at folsom prison singing these songs for inmates.

    This song was written in 1948 by Roy Hogsed. Not Johnny Cash. Although Johnny Cash is a National Treasure.

    While on tour that year, he was arrested October 4 in El Paso, Texas, by a narcotics squad. The officers suspected he was smuggling heroin from Mexico, but found instead 688 Dexedrine capsules (amphetamines) and 475 Equanil (sedatives or tranquilizers) tablets that the singer had hidden inside his guitar case.

    Johnny was a wild one when he was young but,, these are just stories he wrote. He did go through drug addiction, alcoholism and fooling around when he first got famous. In the end he married his soulmate, June Carter. He got straight and went back to the religion of his youth. The 2nd half of his life was peaceful but he never looked down on anyone

    He never did any prison time. He just had a heart for prisoners and wrote songs from their point of view. He was arrested and went to jail for public drunk a couple times I think. He played concerts in prison though and felt bad for them. The only real famous artist I know of that did that. You should read his book. Man in black. He did have a drug problem.

    Johnny Cash was never in prison except to perform for inmates. He was jailed 7 times( one night each time).

    You need another week of Johnny Cash. Too many good songs still to hear. As we've said, he empathized with convicts and did many concerts in prisons around the country, as well as performing a number of songs that the prisoners could relate to like this one.

    LOL Sunday Morning Coming Down is a lot closer to his real life. Johnny Cash did got to jail once or twice for substance abuse issues, but he was never actually in prison. Unless it was for a concert...

      @@leostawicki7283 definitely know that, but NiN signed over all rights to the song to Mr. Cash because he covered it so well. Even if NiN didn't do that, not all songs that he reacts to are originals, or need to be. Covers are reacted to all the time.

      @@tracykingston9668 the Woody Guthrie version predates Roy Hogsheads version I believe, woodies first recording is from early 1944 while Roy is said to have wrote it that year too, however didn't release it til 1948, however there are other songs released between the 2 like whiskey blues released in 1947, but are all reworkings of a song called Little Sadie, and Bad Lee Brown (the version Woodie recorded) which is referenced in the line "Willie Lee, your name is not Jack Brown" with the names Lee and brown, which were folk songs written in or before 1922

    This song was originally called Transfusion Blues and is much older than this.
    The meaning and lyrics are about the same.

    Recorded live at Folsom Prison. He cursed some but on the original album it was beeped out. Wasn't allowed to curse on records back then.
    Among other things... he said... "you can't say *beep*, *beep*, *beep* or *beep*!!! How's THAT grab you Bob?? 😎"
    I believe Bob was Bob Fergusson, a famed producer and in charge of recording this concert.
    Please correct me if I'm wrong about this Bob.

    Only time Johnny Cash did in Folsom was to entertain to prisoners , he found some great song wright's one was the legendary Merl Haggard as a young man I watched the Johnny Cash show every Wednesday night. Went to see his concert at Palm Beach Florida he had special guests Merl Haggard fresh out of prison, sing Fighting Side of me. 67 and still love hearing his music. Thanks

    Definitely need a Johnny Cash week 2 for Boy Named Sue, Man In Black, and Jackson! For some other country artists to react to try Loretta Lynn, Shania Twain, Reba McEntire, Miranda Lambert, and Trisha Yearwood. I can suggest songs for each one but that'd be a novel length comment lol (They could probably each have their own week(s)).

    Johnny has a lot of songs he sang about prison or specifically Folsom. BUT!!!! He wasn’t in Folsom. He gave a concert which was recorded live at Folsom that was for the prisoners.

    He was NEVER in prison. His songs give people to believe such but,... no never did NO, NO, Folsom prison is where he performed to the inmates. The train song is just a song. He did say he may have done something that should have put him in jail but never did. However Merle Haggard did.
