Festool is expensive but you pay for what you get!! it's all those clever details ! I have festool tools, dewalt ,Bosch and Hitachi and ....... Aldi tools . Like you have done , I also buy tools based on my need, the frequency of use and cost. I remember when I brought my first festool track saw. All the guys laughed at me on site for paying silly money for it, but was not long before they invested in one .I must say I still have NOT got a kapex chop saw I always felt it's a 2 nd fix saw and it wouldn't stand up to large roof timbers up on a scaffold .I still love my dewalt . Excellent video as allways. Keep them coming.
Cheers Dougie, you know I’m not a tradesman, but I have to agree with you the Kapex range are a workshop / lighter use saw and not a site saw. When looking at what I wanted from the saw, one key aspect was it being able to be as close to the wall as possible. When the workshop is finished the Kapex can go right up against the wall as the sliding aspect is in front of the angular tilt, not behind it. Bosch do that crazy arm thing, but to me it looks like too much to go wrong😀. Portability was also key and the underframe with the side extensions is not like anything else I’ve seen on the market. It is so good for me pal, I understand folk will go mad at the cost, which is why I also referenced it is crying out for an after market manufacturer to come up with something similar at a more cost effective price😀
I always use mine outside when I can too!. I met a young fella this week with the exact same set up, including the saw. He is over the moon with his, he said it is just so accurate and brilliant compared to his previous Evolution set up. He is making mainly hardwood and resin tables and the like, trying to build a business while he is still working full time. He gave me some olive and walnut offcuts.
I’ve got my evolution table saw and I think it’s great Tony, but this Festool mitre saw with the under frame is incredible pal! The accuracy, as someone has already said to you, is perfect and the ease of use for me is nothing like I’ve ever come across before. Love it pal😀😀👍
Two quick tips. 1 - Stand on the other side of the saw. Where the power cord winds up for storage is actually a grab handle you use to pull the saw up. 2 - if you don't have a level, unscrew and pull out one of the legs extensions. Use the miter clamp to hold in place on saw, level your extension leg.
Thanks Ural for the tips. If you’re referring to where I stand when raising and lowering the stand, I only have the use of my left arm so if I stood on the other side I’d have to have my back to the saw which is a bit uncomfortable. Great tip for levelling up👍👍
Great review, Leo - you brought home nicely some of the less obvious but very positive aspects of the Festool stand. Having struggled with the more traditional stands on many an occasion, I can see the advantages.
It is a fantastic product Eddie. I totally understand that folk switch off to Festool because of their prices, however in this case I would say to them show me a suitable alternative currently on the market? In my research their isn’t one. It is expensive yes, but it also excellent for me which made it worth the investment 👍😀

I know Festool will have all kind of patents all over these, but surely they don’t ‘own’ the rights to a portable mitre saw trolley that you can add extension arms to? I honestly think there would be a real market for it in a mid price area. An after market manufacturing company should look into this. If you, me and Sumo bang our heads together I’m sure we’d come up with something🤔🤔🤷♂️😂

I would imagine it would go something like that. Perhaps contacting one or more of the midrange companies and asking them that very question may be the spark to ignite the fuse! 👍🏾
Good video Leo the only thing i don't like with festool is the price i do own one of their tools but in my opinion i do think they are very over priced i can see the attraction for someone in your position for easy set up compared to other well known brands look forward to your next video.

Which brought me to the conclusion as to why isn’t there an aftermarket company producing something in a similar style? Surely there would be a substantial market for a similar product, just not at a Festool price? Maybe we will see something soon🤷♂️

I get the feeling a lot of Festool owners are like Apple fans, they just love the brand and the system approach, and why not, people are free to choose how they spend their own money. I just can't believe that the kapex for example can be any more consistently accurate than my blue bosch mitre saw at less than half the price. Having said that the dust collection is not the best, but since I mostly work outside it's not a major problem to me.
Well said Mick. I have to say I wouldn’t have bought the saw without also purchasing the stand. If I was purely after a sliding mitre saw to fix to a mitre station then there would have been other possibilities. Having said that I am surprised more mid market saws haven’t invested in ‘against the wall’ designs as I’d imagine that would be a pain for most workshop folk who value floor space at a premium. The dust collection on the Kapex is very good, but again I’m not qualified enough to compare it against other models. And yes, I thought very long and hard and walked out of the shop twice before returning to put my order in😂
Cheers for the feedback. That clamp I got from Axminster and it is their trade MFT ratchet clamp. Unfortunately they don’t sell them anymore (might be worth checking in case they changed their mind). I believe they’re also available from the likes of Banggood but I’ve never used them personally 👍

Besides the obvious one of £££ I can't see any drawbacks to this. I'm curious about one thing about the saw though (I know the review will come after the Workshop build) did you find the double button for switching the starting the saw hard to get used to?
To be honest pal my budget saw prior to the Kapex had a double button thing so it’s second nature to me. I’ve watched plenty of reviews and I agree with what you say, particularly with opinions from over the pond in the US. Fair dos, if they’re given one I suppose a premium company like Festool or Mafell don’t want their shortcomings pointed out, but then we need to take the ‘review’ with a pinch of salt as it is more a promotion than a critique. I did watch the Finnish Carpentry guy in the States look at a Kapex. I watched a fair bit of his stuff and like his no nonsense approach and relaxed style of presentation. He’s a big Dewalt guy and I do think the top end Dewalt mitre saws are better suited to site work really. Anyway he’s given a Kapex KS-120 to try out and loves loads of things about it, but absolutely hates the central handle and button mechanism. Personally I prefer it as I’ve had to teach myself to be left handed and I do like the handle in the middle so you can work either side. Most power tools are set up for mainly right handed dominant use, but the Kapex is equally happy either side. I suppose that what makes the top end companies so good as in the end they’re all good for different reasons, it comes down to what personally suits the individual😀

You might not be able to answer this Leo because of your arm but maybe a friend or someone else could. I have a Kapex and was contemplating buying the stand but tonight when i was looking at it in Woodcraft it seems really awkward to lift it into a truck bed. Is that true? None of the employees there knew how to actually stow the saw properly so I am looking around at videos seeing if maybe it stows differently than I thought and makes it less awkward. I love the base on my Sawstop jobsite saw because the handles are meant to be placed on the tailgate and then you just grab the back and pivot/slide the saw in - so cool. Anyway it kind of had me wondering if I could design my own with handles that would accomplish the same thing as the Sawstop stand does. Any thoughts on this as far as lifting it into a truck?
Hello Jeff, thanks for the message. Short answer is yes with two arms you could easily lift the saw mounted on the stand up onto a tailgate. It’s a bit difficult to describe in words, but when you collapse the stand the side that collapses forms a handle above the saw and the section where the side disconnects from forms the handle at the bottom of the saw. Once the saw is collapsed on the stand you’ll see the top points to pick it up. I know this explanation isn’t much help but yes it can be done 👍👍

I'll have to go back to Woodcraft and try it again. The employees there didn't know how the saw was supposed to be stowed and I think that might be why it was so awkward. I haven’t had any issues tbh. When I built the workshop I’d often be putting 3 to 4m lengths on the frame and it was fine. It’s more or less permanently set up in the workshop now with storage underneath the wings that I built for them, I have a separate video if you’d like to check it out 😀👍
Morning Mark, I suffered an injury to my brachial plexus nerve in a car crash over three years ago. Lost the use of what was my dominant right hand. Only took up woodworking/ making after this to help with my physical and mental health👍. Cheers for the message and hope you enjoyed the video, Leo 😀👍
