I actually really like these corner names. They add a lot of character to the lap that the layout itself lacks, while also simplifying the lap. I'm especially a huge fan of Paradise and Elvis, though Sands is also spot on for the desert location. Also, calling the back straight "The Strip" should've been obvious to everyone.
> ... that the layout itself lacks... And there's the problem. If you have to resort to interesting corner names to make a track interesting, guess what? It's a dog of a track.
Corners get called what they get called. Who calls the first chicane at Monza the Retifilio Tribune? Nobody. It's defining characteristic is that it's first, not that it's in front of the grandstand.
From what i remember, the Tarzan corner in Zandvoort is named after the farmer owning the patch of land where the corner now lies. He was known in town as Tarzan because he was a bulky figure. He didn't want to hand over his patch and turned out to be a tough negotiator.
Saw a version on Reddit based on pig parts. Instead of “The Elvis Chicane” my vote goes to “Trotters.” Of course Elvis Chicane is too good a name to lose, so that replaces Cosmos
Paradise, Elvis and Sands are the best names. Honestly I can imagine hearing the commentary already. Also, love the touch just for Crofte, he'll spend all weekend coming up with drinks, and quips about drinking I'm sure. (Especially if someone goes off there!)
I think turn one must be called 'the ace', because it's the first card in a deck of playing cards. Suitable for the first corner i think. Especially since you don't have anything on casino's yet
There's some good names there: Aps, Strip, Mirage, Cosmo-Aria Complex HArbor island Rochelle, and I kinda like Top Golf. those are all good in my books
Tarzan corner: You are somewhat correct. According to Jan Lammers, the director of Circuit Zandvoort and resident of said town, there used to be communal gardens at that spot. The owner of the land on which those gardens were placed had the nickname Tarzan.
Very imaginative names for the circuit. I think I would name the "Sphere" corner as "The Bubble" - derisory of the size and purpose of the Sphere. Elvis is best for Corner 1. Down the finishing straight and into Elvis - a sharp left handed corner.
I'm thinking about naming Turn 1 after a driver. Alan Jones won the 1981 Caesars Palace GP, the first ever F1 race in Las Vegas. Keke Rosberg corner could also be fitting since he clinched the '82 title there.
I really like when corners have names. And big reason is that when circuits change, corner numbers may change. The left-right at the end of first long straight in Abu Dhabi used to be T8-T9, but with the changes introduced for 2021 it's T6-T7 now. And by the way, Okayama International Circuit (formerly Aida, where F1 raced in 1994 and 1995) has first corner, last corner and most of the rest named after former racing drivers. So it's not like mix of those wouldn't work.
The straight between Rochelle & Paradise (4 & 5) should be called "Bacon". Because (as previously stated) the track looks like a pig and bacon comes from the belly (google tells me).
I'm honestly not worried about naming those corners. Corner names naturally arise, even without a central authority. For the Circuit de Monaco, turn 1 is named "Saint-Dévote" because it's in front of the Saint-Dévote Chapel. Turn 4 is called "Casino" because it's right next to a casino. No one ordered people to call them that way. It's just that whatever name that made sense stuck.
As always, original and interesting F1 content as we come to expect from you. Kudos Mr. V! And I'm so happy your channel's finally gaining some traction.
Zandvoort Tarzan: The official story: before the circuit was built the area of the first corner was part of an allotment garden. One of the owners was nicknamed 'Tarzan' because of his physical appearance. This 'Tarzan' refused to give up his land until he was promised the circuit would name the corner after him, or rather his nickname.
Tarzan corner at Zandvoort is called that way, because it was the land owner wish to get the corner named after him when he sold the land to the circuit.
For the turns 14-16 complex I kinda like the name “Cosmo-Aria” I think it’s a bit longer but the double name both sounds nice and indicates it’s more than one turn.
I think instead of Elvis chicane it should be called the Sinatra chicane. I always associated Elvis more with Hawaii than Vegas whereas Frank Sinatra’s name is synonymous with Las Vegas. Either that or the Rat Pack chicane. Still maintains the Sinatra reference and also sounds just silly enough to be an F1 corner name
Ooh, we're gonna get a corner named after Logan Sargeant christening of the track with it's first crash! Can't wait to figure out which corner will be named "Sargeant's Blunder."
Such a good video I mean this as a compliment, every time I watch your videos. I'm shocked at how low your subscribers are. You're punching way above your weight and that's great
“And max verstappen starts his hot lap. Going sharp through *turn 1* and straight into *Rochelle*. DRS is on and he flies down the track. Now coming up a sharp turn, *Paradise* but he handles it like a piece o’ cake. Speeds it up, and into *Elvis* we go, a bit of a tricky one. He puts it down on throttle through *Sands*. *Palazzo* is the next corner. And the the best part of the circuit, the grand *Strip* when he speeds his car to 300+ km/h, straight down into *Cosmos* we go!. He has done a great lap and finally, full throttle into *Top Golf* will he do it, YES HE WILL! Max verstappen goes with the fastest lap!” That actually sounds really good!!
The dutch corner is called Tarzan corner because when the track was build a farmer named Tarzan wouldn't sell his land. But then He agreed to sell his Land if the corner was named after him Hope that helped
130R is an honorary name from a characteristic - the original 130R was a 130m radius but the track was modified at that specific corner due to a major crash but retained the name 130R.
Minor correction. Stowe at Silverstone is a Location not an Honorary corner name. The village of Stowe is right near the track. Like Arnage at Le Mans.
The first hairpin and the first chicane are named pig heel and pig chicane respectively, also the 90° corner before the long straight is named snout I think
Roulette into Rochelle, down Straight Flush, right on Silver, through Elvis, down Sands, left on to Wynn, down the Strip, turn on Miracle, left on Top Golf and across the line
As a US west coaster Turn 12 can be Palazzo but as an alternative you have Wynn and Encore, the 2 Ray shaped resorts designed by the architect genius of Vegas’ golden age: Steve Wynn. And what better thing to call the end of Sands as “the Encore” the last turn before you go on The Strip and it’s the last turn of Sector 2!! It’s also where Norris famously crashed as the first major accident during a GP in Vegas (excluding practice and quali cuz we all know what happened in FP1). It’s also where Verstappen and Russell clashed as well for overtaking. All in all, it really makes “Encore” feel correct for a name as an alternative to Palazzo “Going wheel to wheel through Sands, fancying a chance at the Encore”
I would’ve gone with pig body parts as they line up with the track. And you could mix it up with food names too. Pork belly, the hooves, snout turn, pig butt… to name a few.
Hmm... Not really a fan of how F1 has behaved or how this has shaken out in general so this audience probably isn't going to like my offerings but here we go 1. This is still a public road 2. WTF is this chicanery chicane 3. Blocked from the entrance to my own home stretch 4. I had to close my business corner 5. We killed a guy for extra bleachers bend.
Im glad that the straight after Rochelle is named after a former Driver Kovalainen. But the Elvis chicane should be Hoof chicane. I can only see a pig when I look at the track.
In the tradition of Maggots/Becketts, *if* there were a similar pair of corners anywhere on that track, I'd suggest calling them Siegfried and Roy. Unique, iconic, and inextricably associated with Vegas. (Also, the names roll off the tongue pretty easily.)
Maybe let's drop the "top" from top golf and call it just "golf"? Feels like it'd be better IMO Also if we want to actually come up with a name for T1 I put forward "Sinatra" or "Rat Pack", arguably the 2nd most associated person/group after elvis
Great video again. I was pretty against your dismissal of the sphere chicane until you brought out Elvis, at which point I totally agreed. Would be good to see these get some traction (unlike the cars in vegas, am I right…?!)
10 and 11 being a right-lefter complex, I'd feel 11 a little left out and deserving of it's own name or a combination, like Venetian Sands. But on closer inspection 11 appears to wrap around the high-rise of Palazzo, I'd be inclined to call it Palazzo. That'd leave turn 12 nameless. Looking at the map, there's alternatives like Treasure Island and Wynn near that corner. Also the Lake of Dreams between Wynn and the corner proper. While the Wynn/Win might seem too easy, Dreams or Treasure may alude more to the reason drivers (and gamblers) are there: to win. (After all it's where they enter the strip.)
As Forestfan said, I think The Bubble would work better for the triple chicane next to the Sphere, but we have the left turn between that and Paradise that we can call Elvis. There's also a missing corner name after Sands, so let's call that Jones after Alan Jones, the first winner of two Caesars Palace GPs (the other was Michele Alboreto, and there's already an Alboreto Curve, even if it's really Parabolica). Finally, Top Golf can be shortened to Golf. It's just easier to remember and isn't tied so much to the company.
I never thought that naming corners would be a concern, but now we gotta show Crofty this before Friday!
thursday*
YES
Yes FUCKING PLEASE
Been spamming Crofty's email all day, this is the most important thing that has ever happened in F1 ever 😤
THESE ARE EXCELLENT. LETS MAKE IT HAPPEN
Let's go full on NASCAR style with the corner names. "Las Vegas Grand Prix Nevada Planet Hollywood Turn for the Veterans"
The fact that reading this makes me so nauseous means it's perfect
I read that in Mike Joy's voice
No, NASCAR doesn’t do that. It’s more like, Turn 1, turn 2, turn 3, turn 4.
"...Brought to you by Hooters"
Should have done an honorary name for Carroll Shelby. His company (Shelby American) is based "in" Las Vegas.
That's perfect for turn 1.
100% this. Replace "Elvis" with the "Shelby S"
That's my bad. He can have Turn 1 in that case
Turn 1 should be Gerney, with the Shelby Ss
or, instead of Elvis, call it "the Cobra"
It would be so american if they just named them after sponsors or products. Amazon turn 3, Nike turn 5, Big Mac turn 7, Iphone turn 10 etc
Ah yes my favourite corner "Apple iPhone 10 Pro Max 128GB"
you're right but lots of circuits been doing that since the 90s (Fuji, Suzuka, some in spain,..)
Is that why soccer jerseys have ugly sponsors on them while none of the US sports have any sponsorships on the jersey
thats what i as a european was thinking :D@@cereal-killer4455

Yeah, I'm not a fan of the newer street layouts at all.@@peterthomas5792
Rochelle and Palazzo are actually top tier for this track imo. Not sold on Turn 1, but there is a nice comedic thing about it that is growing on me
Corners get called what they get called. Who calls the first chicane at Monza the Retifilio Tribune? Nobody. It's defining characteristic is that it's first, not that it's in front of the grandstand.
T2 = back foot. Koval lane = pork belly straight, T7 front foot 1, T9 Front foot 2, T14 = Pigs tail, T15 Pigs ass, and so on,
Honestly Pig Belly straight is a good name
Let's be honest. The sphere chicane will probably just be called the Sphere chicane
The Phicane
the atmospheric chicken
THE BALL TWIST
The Gonad chicane
The ball chicane
Or balls for short

yea he stipulated when he finally sold that the corner be named after him.

I'm personally preferential to "silly stompers", but trotters is good too
I also think the Elvis chicane being on the strip is more fitting
Trotters sounds like a corner on a UK club circuit. I love it!
Paradise, Elvis and Sands are the best names. Honestly I can imagine hearing the commentary already.
Also, love the touch just for Crofte, he'll spend all weekend coming up with drinks, and quips about drinking I'm sure. (Especially if someone goes off there!)

I like it! Straight into ace corner
PERFECT!
I wished F1 marketing was this bright for things that matter to us fans.
Hole shot on the ace = ace in the hole
I really like Top Golf as well. That's the exact type of name parts of tracks deserve.
So many Golf puns are possible in racing context. Like "what a drive", "he's gone into the bunkers", "that sector is in the greens" and so on

Aps,
Strip,
Mirage,
Cosmo-Aria Complex
HArbor island
Rochelle,

I can just hear the drums kicking into jailhouse Rock as the cars whip it into t1 on lap 1
We should call the sequence around the sphere "the orbit". Similar to the sequence around the spider at Barber Motorsports called charlotte's web
maybe just turn 6 because it actually takes the path of an orbit
the "Tarzanbocht" has its name because of the nickname (Tarzan) of the man who owned the plot of land where the corner is now located
I came here for stupid and got genuinely good corner names. We must petition F1 to make these official
I'm thinking about naming Turn 1 after a driver. Alan Jones won the 1981 Caesars Palace GP, the first ever F1 race in Las Vegas. Keke Rosberg corner could also be fitting since he clinched the '82 title there.

I mean, Tarzan's parents came from The Netherlands, or Disney's version of The Netherlands, so makes sense to me
Turn 1 should be "The Gamble" or just "Gamble" because of the guaranteed mess that it'll create
Sphere is a perfectly fine geometric word and I'd keep it as a name for the Chicane. Otherwise this is perfect
