  • Outspoken, frank, and bitingly clever, Penn Jillette is a cultural phenomenon as a solo personality and as half of the world-famous, Emmy Award-winning magic duo Penn & Teller. In his new book, Presto! he describes his determination to transform himself-body and mind-and gives his views on sex, religion, and pop culture. CHF associate artistic director Alison Cuddy joins this master provocateur for a rollicking evening of mayhem and magic against the backdrop of the 2016 presidential campaign.
This program was recorded on Nov 4, 2016, as part of Chicago Humanities Festival's Fallfest/16: Speed

Wow! I've always liked Penn Jillette and even met him after a show in Vegas but he is way more interesting and awesome than I ever realized! I really have a lot of respect for him and his honesty, integrity and sense of fairness. I wish he could be president.

I so appreciate Jillette's constant disclaimers that this was HIS journey. Im so happy for him and there is a lot that you can take from his journey about the modern state of food and its addictive nature, and changing your diet really can help you lose weight and be healthier and happier. But the truth is that Jillette has a very intense personality that allowed him to "not make a mistake" for an entire season to lose the weight. Most people do not have that kind of constitution, and shouldn't beat themselves up that they cannot. Most people need a more sensible plan and lots of support, and thats totally OK too. Everyone one's journey is different and we can glean from Penn but need to know his story his his own.

Don't get confused between Intermittent Fasting (IF) and a Diet. Penn clearly has the benefits of living with IF (16/8 style) while eating a certain diet. You can have the same benefits from IF with multiple diet choices. Some go vegan, some go carnivore, some Keto and some eat mixed diet and all can be great success

it has to be raw or wfpb or a mixed between the two to get the best benefit,, i recommend starch and veggies and algeaflaxchialeafygreens and b12 ofc,,, and you will get all benefits after sobering of a fasting without starving,, its the fat and the sugar that are toxic AVOID Fruits nuts and fatty seeds as well,, (and everything not wfpb obviously FOR THE IDIOTS STILL NOT GETTING THAT IF ITS NOT VEGAN ITS NOT HEALTHY or oils absolute worse crap,, i shouldnt even mention it but so many retards been too many years of knowledge research and experience and testing on myself and others for me to still have to argue with fkin idiots who still not vegan wfpb

I compete in mma which has weight classes. Part of the game is losing weight regularly.
The single biggest piece of info was something I discovered mysel when I wrestled in high school.
Whatever diet change you make, such as cutting calories, it will suck but will become normal after 2 weeks.
You can use that info right there to change your entire body.
The largest weight cut I ever pulled was going from 200 down to 148 pounds.
    Step 1 eat no sugar
    Step 2 exercise
Step 3 eat a normal dinner with a small breakfast consisting of protein shake and a banana.
I lost 20 of my pounds in the first 10 days doing just what I've listed before 2 weeks even kicked in.

16 hours between meals isn’t “oh my god, that’s a long stretch”. It’s just stopping of consuming calories after 8pm and just skip breakfast and eat your first calorie at noon. It’s called intermittent fasting and it’s helps you lose weight for real. Cave men did it. They couldn’t open the fridge, or go to a store/restaurant. They had to find their next meal so they’d often go for hours and hours between meals and I don’t think they were fat.

Buuzzsaw Touched Me: The guy puts books down that he's finished wherever he finished them, at a friends house, or wherever he finished it. He tore out pages that he had already read, he said if he didn't have a family, he'd prefer to live in hotels rather than be committed to one home. He's an extremely open guy. I'm not surprised at all that his hair is shorter here than in most of the times I've seen him. He's had very long hair, long hair, medium hair, and here it's fairly short hair. He's been heavy, thin, and average. His facial hair I'm sure has changed many, many times throughout his life.
But one thing I don't agree with is your charge that his voice isn't as deep as what you imagine that it used to be. The one thing that I can say that has remained constant is his voice, he sounds exactly like Penn Jillette to me.
VIPKID Vault: Penn has definitely sported a ponytail more than once in his life.

On my journey I have learned that I don't really care about the physical world and am at the 50% club about living or dieing.
Not quitting anything for any reason.
The journey has been long and arduous, I am looking forward to the end of my life here.
    Is there anything after?
I don't expect that there is.
I know that I don't deserve the punishment of living in a world of chaos caused by the ruling elite.
Nor do I crave the attention of others in my life.
I think that I have learned.
    Some would call it zen.
Others would say that I am foolish.
I just feel that I have seen and done and lived in a bad dream that others have controlled.
May they have their control over the ignorant masses forever.
I am just waiting and watching.

I've weighed the same since 6th grade, so I don't understand weight problems. Don't get them. I've known people who battled with it and stuff, but don't get it, at all. I won't blink twice about eating a whole pizza in one sitting, or salads for a week (but I'm gonna cover the salad anyway with tons of oil, and just laugh when I read the calories at the back of the dressing). I've done all the things you shouldn't do, don't gain a pound. Must be tapeworms, I guess. Or just genetically can't get fat, who knows, but I'd be the first person someone eats when my flight crash lands in the Andes mountains, since I have no reserves. Actually, I can't remember the last time I weighed myself, maybe when a kid, otherwise the last 3 people to weigh me were nurses or doctors, probably for dosage reasons.

    • @therabbithat

yeah i did a nutrition introduction course with some university, i forget which one.. Monash or the Open University... and we were taught it doesn't matter if you eat lots of times a day or just once a day as long as you aren't hungry and as long as you eat enough.
If you are hungry on purpose and not eating enough that's different, that's an eating disorder, it can lead to binge eating and heart problems and incontinence
there's no evidence (yet?) that the fasting period helps at all EXCEPT in as much as it helps some people to make sure that they don't eat too much. So if that's not a problem, and you like eating often, there's no reason not to eat 3 meals a day + snacks. If you are oil free whole food plant based I imagine you would struggle to eat enough even eating 3 meals a day plus snacks, especially if nut butter is forbidden :O that's a super restrictive diet
for the fasting people who love the ad hoc evolutionary stuff: all evidence points to our ancestors being foragers and eating a little often, but arguments based on what our ancestors did are mostly bullshit

    • @89medic
      @89medic 6 років тому

Cammi Eklund change the diet? If you eat meat then try keto diet. NOT FOREVER... just 6 months. After the 6 months try slowly integrating healthy carbs. Like some different veggies and fruits. Are you working out as well? Many people don’t feel they’ve controlled their hunger because of a big workout. Just a suggestion though. And when I was in Afghanistan the only thing I did was stop drinking soda and I started cardio at 30 minutes a day. I weighed 212 lbs January 2012 and by June 2012 I was doing 45 minutes of cardio a day and I weighed 159 lbs. just doing cardio and cutting soda.

    • @someguy2135

As you may know, a wfpb diet contains protein, albeit less per serving. What I think could be your problem feeling satisfied, is fat. On a wfpb diet, your fat has to come from seeds, nuts, and avocados. Be sure to get enough of those. I eat a mostly wfpb diet, and eat a lot of hummus. Most hummus has added oil, but some only have tahini for fat. Tahini is just ground sesame seeds. I also find fruit and protein smoothies helpful. The protein comes from pumpkin seeds, oatmeal, and peanut butter powder. Nuts are great, but don't go overboard. Potatoes are supposed to be very satiating. AKA satisfying.

Fasting creates "peak experiences", every cult and anorexia sufferer knows that, it's cool and all, but it is what it is. You can get it from staying perfectly still for long enough too (provided you don't fall asleep) or from sleep deprivation.
