7:30 Same thing happened with hockey in the eastern block in the 90’s and continues today. All the great players used and use the local league and national team to show of what they could do and eventually declared for the NHL draft. This is how Jágr, Ovechkin, Chára, Gáborík, Kucherov, Panarin, Hossa etc got into NHL. Juraj Slafkovsky got noticed and drafted mainly due to his performance in the IIHF world cup. And yes the quality of national teams and leagues, especially in smaller countries like Czechia or Slovakia did go down.
When a young baseball player is a talented athlete he is often good at hitting and pitching. I have read about how MLB outfielders will practice pitching to each other when warming up, especially the knuckelball. Superstar hitters like Ichiro have sometimes begged a chance to pitch in a game, just for fun and to maybe get in the books as a player who played all 9 positions in one game. I never understood why MLB would not let players excel at both pitching and hitting. This will be fun, as Ohtani has possibly changed the future career choices of talented players in Japan and the USA. And also in Cuba, Venezuela, Dominican Republic, and every other place baseball is played. This also may make baseball more popular in Europe and Asia as it will increase to worldwide coverage of US MLB now that our best and richest player is an Asian. Why not in Africa too. All you need is one ball and one bat to play a game of baseball.
Ohtani was with the Anfor for 6 years and I've not seen anything as big as what I've seen the Dodgers have done around Ohtani in the first 30 days. I was an Angels because Ohtani and Trout and now I'm a Dodgers fan.
He will get $350 million after taxes. In Japanese endorsements, he might make 25 million (They really don't pay that much in Japan). I don't think he will ever make it to a billion.
Rendon contract and angels put a trauma to ohtani that he rather get paid later than put a team limit in recruiting other players like rendon because of the contract
Getting Shohei may also help the Dodgers get Yamamoto. After that, who knows how many free agents will want to come and play on this dream team? Lots of ifs yet to be determined, but if Yamamoto is added, and the snowball effect builds momentum, this could be another dynasty like the Yankees of the 1930s and 1940s.
As a long suffering Padre fan whose team’s sugar daddy owner just died of cancer and whose team has commenced yet another fire sale….being in the same division as the Dodgers just ABSOLUTELY SUCKS BALLS!
It is the largest contract but the money per year of those superstar soccer players is insane too, keep in mind that his $700 million contract is 10 years. For reference Lionel Messi’s $674 million cotract is 4 years Cristiano Ronaldo had a $536 million contract for 2.5 years
The perennial championships teams in MLB has solid bullpen...would not be surprised if they restart Shohei in the bullpen, perhaps in 2024 during the playoff!!!!
Baseball should structure itself more like football/soccer, with the MLB being like the Premier League, and NPB and KBO being like Bundesliga and La Liga. This would expand baseball to a global scale and culminate in the WBC being like the World Cup. There can even be a tournament every year like the Champions League where the top teams from each league have something to play for in a single elimination, bracket style tournament. This will incentivize leagues to keep players, farm talent, spend more in cross-league signings, and grow their brands so that each year, they can be competitive against other leagues. And it gives regions that normally wouldn’t have a collective league, the chance to play within a structure. A Latin Anerican league, consisting of clubs from Mexico, DR, PR, Venezuela, Panama, etc, can be a competitive league with no major competitors in major sports within that region. The WBC this year, proves that baseball can be a global product if handled correctly
IMO, whether it's financially sound or not greatly depends on his elbow. If he slumps next year while only hitting, is there going to be as much hype? If the Dodgers can't get it done in the post season, will he continue to draw huge international interest? This isn't even his first elbow surgery, he's already had Tommy-John, so it'll be a huge deal for him to get back on the mound in 2025 and still be an effective pitcher. Considering he'll be turning 30 next summer, he's only going to start declining as time goes on. How much and how fast will be key to how this contract ends up turning out.
theres nothing bending the rules regarding his contract. ohtanis contract isnt the first ever. both betts and freeman have deffered payment contracts. ten years from now the dodgers will be worth even more than they are now. people upset by this are fuckin idiots. if your team doesnt spend money thats nobody elses issue but that team and fanbase. cheap teams dont deserve the league handicapping other richer teams at all. owners arent special trying to keep revenue as high as possible while not paying any players. not that people playing sports deserves hundreds of millions to begin with. watching people play sports doesnt change lives and never has.

It’ll be interesting to see how the Rays handle it. They’re allergic to spending money so I could definitely see Randy somewhere else. It’s really up to the Dodgers. If they wanna make it happen, they will. I could also see the Giants or Padres making a push to land him.
How will the Angels' crowd react when he returns? Will they welcome him with warm hearts like the Colts did with Manning or will it be like Lebron's return to Cleveland where the entire stadium was booing him?
Still a risky contract. LA is 1 sprained ankle away from losing 2 players. Winning in baseball is all about all 25 guys on roster, not superstars. Trout and Ohtani have already proven it.
Just hope in 10-15 years from now this doesn't come and bite the dodgers in the ass. Reason being you will be paying 68 million for over 10 years after that player is long gone and retired. Won't that payroll affect that decade in signing players ???
The owners are smart and know they will make it back. 😂😂😂 Stanton, Davis, Strasburg, Cabrera, on and on. Hundreds of millions of losses and way more on the books.
Because he knows he can make 60+ from endorsements alone. Per year. Minimum. Are you worried he’ll go broke? It’s more likely he’ll make double what he did with the angels tho. No one cares about the angels. Dodgers are an international fanbase
1. He will save $35 million in taxes each year for the next 10 years. 2. It allows the Dodgers to spend on another elite player. Ultimately, Shohei just wants to do what is best for the Dodgers and win championships. 3. He doesn't need the money now. He makes $45 million a year on endorsements. How much does he need to live on? That one year of endorsements is enough to take care of 4 generations of his descendants for the rest of their lives.
Can you explain? I’ve heard the opposite. I’ve heard that he will move back to Japan before he starts collecting the bulk of his money, and will not have to pay state income tax, as he won’t be a California resident at that time.
@@TrevorD19 yup. Me too. Since all his money is differed he will move back to Japan before he is paid. And won’t pay a lot of the tax on it… So he won’t pay 2/3 in tax. More like 37%.
This will destroy baseball unless MLB deliberately wants an LA/NY only league and a trick and pony show to pretend there is regular season while destroying any national appeal. interested in MLB now writing them off
Dodgers always screw up in the playoffs. Shohei didn't get the Angels to the playoffs. Lets compare him to Micheal Jordan who pushed his team to a championship for years in a row. Good Luck
Big difference though, even if they are both team sports. In basketball even if you dont have the ball you can impact the game in someway as long as you are in the court where as in baseball you cant take all the at-bats of your team mates and you cant pitch in back to back games as this is not possible unless you willing to injure yourself.

Great video. Can you explain me why he is deferring his money with 0 interest? I mean, he's going to lose a lot with inflation
They are risking a pay day coming early. He will win 2
When you say the world of sports you should actually say "world of American sports"
Dodgers will win 5 rings with ohtani
Four, or more
10 rings😂
2 -3
Shohei will have over 2/3 taken in taxes. His contract is written like the lottery
Can you explain?
I’ve heard the opposite. I’ve heard that he will move back to Japan before he starts collecting the bulk of his money, and will not have to pay state income tax, as he won’t be a California resident at that time.
@@jeff4son Oh. I'm just talking about the usa
@@TrevorD19 yup. Me too. Since all his money is differed he will move back to Japan before he is paid. And won’t pay a lot of the tax on it…
So he won’t pay 2/3 in tax. More like 37%.
@@jeff4son I'm sure there are some bs laws that will force him to pay us taxes
income tax isnt standardized across the country. income tax isnt the same in california as it is in arizona. @@TrevorD19
He getting 4 of those things
Rejected 2 way player can't be wished for.
Last point you made is very misguided
Ninjas already a billionare
At least 4
Call me crazy I’m dead serious ohtani will win all years w dodgers
This will destroy baseball unless MLB deliberately wants an LA/NY only league and a trick and pony show to pretend there is regular season while destroying any national appeal. interested in MLB now writing them off
0 cuz they choke every year
Dodgers always screw up in the playoffs.
@@exia0616 True i give you credit on that reply. But his WAR is so up there when he's a two way player. He should be able to push the Angels into the playoffs in my opinion. Especially with Mike Trout.
@@jameswilgor6835 issue is angels has mediocre at best lineup, their rotation is bad and i mean really bad in which some of their rotation guys wont even be given a starting role in other clubs.
acting like the bulls won every single play off run is fucking stupid. michael jordan literally means nothing to basektball in 2023. what people did 20 years ago doesnt make them important today. mj has nothing to do with any team in the nba. comparing two different sports is dumb as hell. id say tom brady is a better goat than mj. 7 is more than 6
two players doesnt make any team a contender in any sport@@jameswilgor6835
I’d say Ohtani will win 3 rings with the Dodgers tbh.
With all due respect to Ichiro who we all know is a Legend, I disagree with you and it’s probably because you’re younger and just weren’t around to see when Hideo Nomo came over and signed with the Dodgers. That was a very big deal. And Japanese Folks lost their minds. There was a lot of fanfare with Nomi and he was really good too.
