I went thru one on I-40 Westbound in northern arizona years ago & the d.o.t. officer sitting in the window of the building told me this: "let me see your registration, insurance & ifta card." Then she changed her mind & said: "as a matter of fact, just give me the entire permit book instead!!" I said here you go. She looked at every permit in my permit book & then gave it back to me & said: "you're good driver & continued safe travels!!" I said thank you officer & continued rolling. If i would've said no about giving her that permit book, she would've hemmed me up!!
at this point it doesn't matter if he knew or not. No BOL made him responsible and guilty the second he drove off the property of wherever he was loaded at.
There is still a fight in court to be had over possession. Yes I know there is a DOT violation, but the real charge still has to be proven. That is of course, if he is smart enough to get an attorney.
During a Level 1 inspection, the CHP looking at my BOL decided to inspect the cargo as well. He proceeded to cut the seal and verify the cargo matched the BOL, after he was done, he stamped the BOL, signed with his signature and badge number, and wrote the number of the seal that he placed on the trailer doors. The stamp stated the seal was cut by a DOT-certified police officer in the performance of an inspection. In total, I have had this done 3 times in 3 different states. I am in effect retired now.
I got pulled over in Koochiching MN close to the border hauling insulation but I didn't have a seal on. I just thought the name was really funny on my inspection report 😆
I’m not a trucker so pardon my lack of knowledge. Are you so saying that you can’t get a job because your seal was broken three times, even though it was done by a cop?
@LuckyCharms777 No the police breaking the seals was never a problem. No, I had to retire due to injuries that I received during Desert Storm, the damage to my body just caught up with me.

Many many times of picked up containers from the rail yard and didn’t have BOL because BOL is located inside sealed container, the only thing they give us is a J-1 with the out gate information in regards to weight, container number, chassis number and time of out gate, no freight info though.
You should use a straight bill and apply your seal. Usually, no one at the port will sign your straight bill, so take a photo and email to dispatch if you can, or email it to yourself. The straight bill, your seal, and sending the email, becomes your defense in a situation like this.
Not all bill of ladings tell you what you are carrying. This is particularly true of high value loads. On high value loads you are not to tell anyone what you are carrying. Often they will not tell you the driver what you are carrying. In the cases where I am carrying high value loads they tell me the load has a value in excess of 1 million dollars but the BOL is in code so I do not know what the load is and my dispatcher does not know what the load is.
Even though a BOL may not rightly show what you're hauling, you have to have one. To roll without the BOL is stupid illegal and takes away all of his plausible deniabillity! 🤔
@@joshuad7953wrong. All loads DO NOT do that on the bill's. The N-95's I hauled DID NOT HAVE AN IDENTIFIER as to that product on my shipment. They were separated and short-hauled next day. Guess what my paperwork read, genius? Or make sure you have a pack of strait BOL, and extra seals. It does happen from time to time where the shipper doesn’t have BOLs. I got loaded with bails of trash going to a recycling plant. When I went in for the paperwork, he didn’t have a BOL, just a sheet of paper with the delivery address and the estimated weight. I filled out a straight bill, grabbed one of my seals, and had him sign it and kept it moving.
@@proam2928who knows if this is legit ? Because according to law , the bill to be legit has to be signed by shipper, carrier , and consignee as a contract agreement. And also has to have a description of the items inside .

I had a shipper in texas try to send me out no bol locked trailer telling me it was just empty boxes. I got in a big argument with the shipper they kept telling me that they don't do bol and that the continent inside is just empty boxes . spent 2 hours going around in circles with them made them open the trailer prove what it was and made them print out a proper bol and I resealed the trailer with a company seal instead of their lock . mine was just empty boxes but I didn't care I called my company and explained it to them. I never went back there again the shipper was trying to say that they have never given a bol to a driver and that they lock the trailer with their own lock to prevent people from stealing the boxes. the first thing out of my mouth was that is not how this works and your going to open that ish up or i am going to drop and leave. I couldn't believe how dumb that shipper was.
It’s been awhile since I’ve driven over the road and experienced different company’s and procedures. It’s nice to read other drivers experiences to realalize how not to end up in trouble..
from the outside it just sounds like nit picking policy..doesnt really sound criminal at all..comes across as who cares..from someone who doesnt know about it though..
I have a dedicated run that is high value and it doesn’t say what it is on my BOL. I’ve even had a few other loads before that were high value and they went just empty crates.
This a common problem especially with freight coming off of the railroad ports. Over seas freight most often Shipps with no BOL or even packing list. Your company should fax you a BOL or they should have a shipment booklet so you can right up your own BOL. But, you can by BOL’s in the truck stop and write them up yourself as well. I had this issue one times during the dot world not take my company trip sheets as a BOL which is pretty standard dealing with railroad freight. They keep saying no boil of lading but the had to finally except it. Then of course they busted open my seal even I told what was supposed to be in the sealed container. To their surprise, it contained just what I said it did and they had to reseal the load. Of course, because they found no dope, they gave me a level 3 inspection just to save face, found nothing wrong and let me go.
Make sure to never leave any info visible through the window when stopped. BOL, scale ticket, or HOS remaining can be used to determine your route and cargo.

Real truckers are not checking out other Man. You are probably in the wrong industry. Besides why identify as a temporary profession. Who cares about being a trucker
Start checking all Amazon, FedEx, ups and major companies trailers. One of the best ways to transport illegal items. Drivers moving all this low rates freight while the broker and drug cartels benefiting from it.
@@LWClefty yeah because you haven’t gotten inspected. It clearly shows that you don’t have any street knowledge. I’m from Laredo, Texas and cartels find any fucking way to transport drugs.
I hauled three loads one being from Arizona and two from Dallas. On all three loads there was nothing to identify what was in the trailer for driver knowledge. All three loads went to Lakeland florida. I have hauled other loads that only had short abbreviations for product identity on the shipping bill. None of those abbreviations were common. Also, on the three loads from Arizona and Dallas? All three loads read as follows; Weight 99999 or 00000. Again, no identity made as to the product and/or numbers of pieces or pallets. Shipping bill read from name/address of shipper to name/address of Receiver. Give you one guess who shipped and who received.
Yes, you need a seal, you need a Bol or a Gbl or a Cbl. The seal has to match that the bills, it does not have to describe the contents. The description can use numbers to describe but a phone number has to be on the bill for the officer to call unless it's a hazmat load. If you do not have a key to the lock, the officer can detain you until a key is provided or the driver or carrier or customer gives permission to cut the lock. Even if you have no bills. Unless they assume there is harm or you are transporting something you should not. Know the rules and regs.
Sounds like he was a fall guy. Who travels up a known heavy drug traffic highway loaded down....no paperwork to be found👀🤦. I bet its not a driver out that way that hasn't been pulled in at least once for an inspection🤨😵.
I have taken a trailer with a lock the previous driver forgot to take off. Those issues by themselves do not indicate a violation of law. You need more.
Yeah, that can happen. I think his actions & not having the bill of lading is what ultimately got him in trouble. You have to either have a bill.of lading physically with you or a digital copy of it on your smartphone & the bill.of lading has to be legible & in english;or they can mess with you over it!!
Once I dropped a load of wire at a construction site, picked up a trailer that had empty wire spools but there was no BOL... stopped at the TA and bought some blank BOL's. Until I got to the truck stop I was worried about getting pulled over with no BOL.
I am not a driver but i am a security guard in texas with some experience working and dispatching loads. Here in texas you do need a bol by law to hit road no exceptions. What i know is that legally the bol does not need the trailer or seal number on the paper just the freight description , weight , consignee , shipper and carrier info and signatures from those three parties and a number where dot can call to verify validity. But i have worked in yards where they only give out rate co or delivery order forms to drivers and fool them into taking the load to consignee with those useless papers . The problem is that they kind of look like a bol but they are not .
When picking up load and after getting loaded make sure you have the correct bill of lading and the correct seal # before you start heading to your delivery
I’ve seen videos of police mailing drugs to people’s houses. As soon as the home owner picks up the package , the police move in. I wonder if they will or are using this trick to catch drivers who don’t know what they are carrying.
I've done a couple of those costco runs to el paso & lubbock, tx from dallas, tx. We keep blank bll of lading books in pur trucks, they send us the load info, we pickup the loads & we fill out the bill off ladings with the info.
Like the other guy stated, carry blank BOLs and fill them out yourself, perfectly legal. I always carried a pack for such occasions. You must have some sort of paperwork.

Every driver knows that he will not get paid without bills. I always need to know weight, number of pallets and load pattern and commodity. Then big question where are the bills. If there is a lock without a key, it may part of the load protocol. He was getting paid from someone and he new to keep his mouth shut. Good call DOT
And if it's paperless u as the driver need to print it. I have NEVER picked up a load without paperwork. You can't even leave the shippers without signing paperwork.
I see on many towing videos that the tow company asks what the load is and how much it weighs and the driver doesn't know. You need a bill of lading. Never hook up without one.
The main reason for asking the weight is so I can decide how much braking I need (empty trailer and a day cab, I'm going to hook and go, fully loaded regular semi, I'm running some brakes). As far as what the load is, just curious and a small part of liking to know where the center of gravity might be (stacked high or just a single layer of pallets)
I don’t know if that driver knew exactly what was back there, but he knew whatever was back there wasn’t exactly legal. I drive for Amazon freight partners most of the time I close the doors and put the seals on myself. All loaded trailers. Have a little wire seal that has to be cut and all empty trailers have no seals at all. Every loaded trailer has a bill of lading, but it’s not an actual paper. It’s on the Relay App. Most of the go from Amazon facility to the next, but sometimes I have to do third-party facilities and I get a bill of lading and I take a picture of it and send it through the Relay app and I put the actual bill of lading in the trailer before I seal it.
There are some shippers that load takes n place their own locks on the trailer and the key for the lock is already at the consignee and any drops prior to the final stop...
Never had a level 1 or 2 inspection. Don't know what they are. Ran the road 40 yrs ago so things might have been different. But you never take a load without paperwork. Especially hazmat.
There's so many things to say about the stupidity. Does he know that DOT can see everything inside your cab and trailer with gamma and X-ray? For example, if the cargo is yours and you have proof, then you will go to prison and be charged with smuggling and interstate trade. And sometimes if the cargo is from one state to another state and for other companies, but it turns out that There is a pallet that requires you to have a hazmat licence, or a tank licence, and you do not know the contents of the load. Be careful, you work in the most dangerous professions 😮
Truck driver here: I was traveling up HWY 75 from Texas through Oklahoma and I stopped at a weigh station. They pulled me in to check for paperwork. I showed them the Bill of Lading, Permit Book, and IFTA. Everything was in order and they told me to have a good day. Hard to tell weather he knew from this video, however, I believe everyone, at some point in CDL training, have been instructed about the rules and importance of carrying a BOL while hauling freight. At the end of the day, it’s the only proof you have to get paid for that particular load. I can see immigrant rookies being the most vulnerable to get caught up in this. No offense whatsoever intended.
That is why these trucking companies love these illegals, they can tell them anything and get away with it. There is much more to being a professional driver than simply holding a steering wheel. These immigrants and illegals are easy targets. And, with the new law changes in regards to speaking the English language and basic communications, this will only get worse.
Innocent unless proven guilty, the officers are unlawful idiots, the law allows them to give him tickets only for that, 👎 if there are any drugs then they can charge him

at this point it doesn't matter if he knew or not. No BOL made him responsible and guilty the second he drove off the property of wherever he was loaded at.
There is still a fight in court to be had over possession. Yes I know there is a DOT violation, but the real charge still has to be proven. That is of course, if he is smart enough to get an attorney.
He should’ve known is the penalty here no matter what he was carrying
Can you take a load with just a delivery order , or rate confirmation paper instead of bill ?

I agree.
I gree too port and rail road never has a BOL and drop and hook
At least you have something on paper.

Being an unsuspecting drug mule is still possible. Seal even empty trailers, each stop for fuel tug test your 5th and tug test your cargo seal.

Yup check everything, terrorism drug cartels you really need to keep an eye on your truck these days
Make sure to never leave any info visible through the window when stopped. BOL, scale ticket, or HOS remaining can be used to determine your route and cargo.

I hauled three loads one being from Arizona and two from Dallas.
On all three loads there was nothing to identify what was in the trailer for driver knowledge. All three loads went to Lakeland florida. I have hauled other loads that only had short abbreviations for product identity on the shipping bill. None of those abbreviations were common. Also, on the three loads from Arizona and Dallas? All three loads read as follows;
Weight 99999 or 00000.
Any load needs bols by law .

You need more.
it can happen!!!
Yeah, that can happen. I think his actions & not having the bill of lading is what ultimately got him in trouble. You have to either have a bill.of lading physically with you or a digital copy of it on your smartphone & the bill.of lading has to be legible & in english;or they can mess with you over it!!
Sorry. I did that a few times 😂
Doesn't matter what, if any, indicators there are. They can search any trailer for any reason. Or no reason. It's not a personal vehicle.

Until I got to the truck stop I was worried about getting pulled over with no BOL.
but you saw it yourself..isnt your self witness fine enough..i mean i take it you are a good standing citizen
