wow, man i miss playing this game both on my 3ds and wii u, wii u, my data was wiped for some reason. 3ds? my console got stolen, returned to me, but only returned a quarter of my games, and super mario maker 3ds was excluded. glad i have this on my switch now.
it sucks that you have to play the story mode to unlock items, they either should have all been unlocked or have a pay to unlock DLC for all of the items

the black borders looks like they are part of the screen but they are just part of system physical hardware , every 3ds model has them.
