A triumph of function over form. You can certainly see the influence of the Sten and Grease Gun in the MAT49, but with some suitable Gallic flair thrown in. Ugly as sin, but just works, nice seeing the accessories and the nerdy bits as well as the dakka :D Edit to add the controllability is also really impressive.
Great vid. I’m reading a lot about French Indochina & Algeria atm and these guns are absolutely iconic of those conflicts. The folding mag housing is a v interesting feature.
I trained with a Mat 49 in Germany with the Franch Forces during Service around 1985. Great light weight thing to play with, I recommend it for any close combat since its so easy to swing up/down, left and Right. It DOES require discipline not to shoot a comrade, and dispersion of ammo can happen if you don't control thoroughly when opening fire. The Famas was harder to deal with ... and so much more difficult to clean !!!!
@@peterclarke7240 It was indeed difficult. 40K is quite popular in France too but hasn’t permeated into popular (gun) culture. The French gun community tends to be more technically minded anyway.

I'm French, have a gun and know the dakka reference, but I realized pretty quickly that at 38 years old, I was among the "young" members of my gun range/club. Even though even when optimistic I don't consider myself "young" anymore. Seems like the French gun community is pretty old overall. I'm not complaining, I've mostly run into very nice (and indeed technically minded) people.
One of my grand-pa was issued one of those during the Algerian War. He really liked it because of its size and general handiness. He also used the MAC-24/29 and also liked it alots, but he didn't use that one all that much. Odly enough he never used a MAS-49 style rifle in his training or in combat, seems weird but thats what he remembers
very interesting. To my knowledge the web pouches were not just a later version, they were specific to the airborne troops ("TAP") and the leather pouches were used up til the end by the other metropolitan branches, when the the FAMAS replaced the other individual weapons.
Some parts of the R5 where actually made by MAT as they got up and running after the Nazis had tried to relocate both men and machines to Germany. Thankfully the train was intercepted by US troops just short of the border.
Interesting information for some nerds maybe: Shortly after the WW2 French approached Czechoslovaks and asked them to share some blueprints for a Czech made submachinegun ZK 383H which was a version of ZK383 with folding magwell... other than that it is quite a different concept but it is possible French got inspired there in terms of the folding magwell for MAT49

@Gresvig, and both bureaucratic monsters on both side of the Atlantic would run in overdrive. According my experience living in both countries, the Swiss authorities are a bit more customer friendly.

The event(s) have thus to be planned in advance in agreement with the range and submitted in the permit application. We’re including the info at the request of the range for legal clarity should any snitches or police deem the shoot as possibly illegal.

I suppose almost nobody agrees with me but I think submachine gun rounds should be more like the takarov (sp) 7.62 x 25 or could we make that 7.62 x 30? or .221 fireball. Fairly hot, flatter shooting rounds that can, in a pinch, reach out a bit and touch someone. They can also go through light body armour with the right bullet.
Awesome video, the nerdy stuff was in point. How was the shooting accuracy with the last technique? Sounds like it would be ideal for hip shooting as Larry Vickers described a similar thing for pistol hip shooting
It is issued per event, but I don’t know what the max event time is, for instance if you have a two day event do you need two permits 🤔 That I don’t know.

It’s the provision under which we were allowed to shoot full auto. The range kindly asked us the insert it in any footage filmed on location to avoid any legal questions.
It was still issued to air force draftees until 2000-1.

There’s no equivalent word for “round” that I know of. I expect there is in FR military jargon though.
We learned how to brace the stock against the abdomen with the C1A1 smg. It even had a similar design flaw.
I got a pair of those canvas magazine pouches from Varusteleka. Very handy, especially for Uzi 32 round mags.
So did I, they were also repurposed in France as interim SIG540 30rnd mag pouches by removing the outermost dividers on each side.

the MAT-49 is a lot of fun to shoot, but the M-3A1 was far simpler, more robust and had that wonderful .45 automatic with it lager 230 grain bullet.

Full auto permit. You can only shoot full auto with express permission of cantonal police who issue a permit for the date/time/location.

there are hardly any longer ranges that allow full auto fire here in switzerland.
We have 25m max and I suck 😆 I haven’t read any complaints about accuracy.
