That chime controller is just a capacitor. So how it works is when you press the button on your doorbell it’ll make a full electrical connection and energize the solenoid which will move the plunger to hit the gong to make the chime sound. Most houses with door chime will run off of a 16 volt AC transformer and when you press the button there will be a voltage drop. The voltage may drop down to 12 volt and at that voltage the camera door bell will shutoff because remember the operating voltage is 16-24 volts AC. To mitigate the voltage drop below 16 volts, that is where the Chime Controller comes in. The chime controller is just a capacitor and will temporarily hold that 16 volt for when the button is pressed and still maintain power to the camera door bell. So there are two ways to help with this voltage drop, 1) install that chime controller (capacitor) or 2) upgrade your transformer to 24 volts AC. It’s also OK to install the chime controller with a 24 volt transformer. It’ll help maintain the power to the camera door bell and also other stuff that is connected to that transformer. For example, I also have my house address number lights lit up by the same transformer.

Wow - this is EXACTLY the answer I was hoping for. Thank for the insane detail!!! My question is - what would explain the controller NOT working when I install it? And then it works fine without it? 🤔

@@TechItBeforeYouWreckIt You mentioned you had a Nest Hello doorbell before. The Nest Hello doorbell required something similar, called the Nest Chime Connector. Usually the Nest Chime Connector is installed in the Chime box, but in your case the previous owner may have installed it by the transformer, thus acting as the Wyze Chime Controller already. Since you do not know where the transformer is (and your video did not indicate removal of the prior Nest Chime Connector), that indicates to me it might have been installed by a previous home owner who might have customized the install of the Nest Chime Connector in a hidden area by the transformer.
Also, to add, it is possible the Wyze Doorbell V2 has a small internal battery, or internal capacitor, that might work temporarily while the the chime gets pressed. In the case of the Nest Hello doorbell, when the small internal battery started dying after a few years, the doorbell would simply shut off and lose power, when the doorbell was pressed. The only way to fix that was to shut off the doorbell chime (in the Nest doorbell app), to preserve power to the Nest Hello doorbell when it was pressed, even with the Chime Connector installed.
So depending on the voltage of your transformer, and if it still has Chime Connector somewhere in the loop, and if there's a small internal battery / capacitor in the Wyze Doorbell V2, it might cause your setup to behave as you describe.
The Wyze Chime Connector should be required for a clean install where no smart doorbell was installed before, especially something like the Nest Hello doorbell or a Ring Doorbell wired (which also has a Chime bypass to continue providing power to the doorbell).

I think I may know what the problem is with your chime controller. Firstly, the chime controller is a capacitor and with these types of capacitors it needs to be connected in parallel to the positive and negative wires. Picture it like this, with the positive and negative wire, the capacitor will be wired right in the middle of those two wires. Versus it being connected in series meaning you will have to splice one of the wire and connect one end to the other (we are not doing that in this case). The other important thing about these types of capacitors is that it is directional meaning it pulls power from one of the wire and not the other way around. So maybe that is your issue… you may have the wire connected positive to negative and negative to positive. If you really want to be sure, use a multimeter, set it for AC and check the polarity of the wire to your chime on the wall. Bet you if you test it based on how it is connected now, the reading will show a (-) negative number meaning it’s reversed. That’s ok, just reverse your chime controller connection. Another test you can do is hook up the multimeter to the Wyze door camera and get the voltage from it. Then hook up the chime controller to the chime on the wall. With the multimeter still hooked up to the Wyze door camera do you see a significant voltage drop or zero voltage reading? Swap the chime controller wires around and see if the voltage is still maintained and stabilized. If after you swap the wires around with the chime controller and you are getting weird voltage reading then the chime controller (capacitor) might be bad and shorting out your connection. Hope that helps.

All, I made a separate comment, however, check your settings in the app after you install the chime controller and have everything powered. There is a setting to change the chime from the default of “NONE” to a Mechanical or Digital chime…

I'd be curious if those people were replacing other smart doorbells, in which case a competitor setup with a similar chime connector might induce the same results if they didn't know or remove the chime connector beforehand.
I suspect this situation is less common when replacing legacy simple mechanical doorbells, which is a cleaner install without remnants of prior smart doorbell chime connectors / bypass devices somewhere in the loop of the transformer to doorbell chime circuitry.

Make sure your transformer is up to running this. 12 volts is not enough, and trying to use it at 12v without using the module will send current through the chime's solenoid until it fails (Mine had an audible hum when hooked up this way.) Switched to a 24V transformer, used the module, and the mechanical chime works like a champ.

Thanks for the video! It was very helpful! I just installed the v2 doorbell today. Tried it without the chime controller, doorbell chime worked, but noticed a slight hum coming from the transformer. Tried to use the chime controller that came with the V2 doorbell, but it would not fit well within the chime housing. So ended up just reusing the Ring chime controller (I was replacing the Ring doorbell pro with the Wyze v2). I have to say the 2K color night vision of the Wyze v2 puts the Ring doorbell vudeo to shame.

  • @yamspaine

Try holding the doorbell button and see if it crashes the camera.
I suspect that the module that goes on the chime keeps power going to the doorbell /stops the short / allows an almost short for the chime, while continuing to provide power to the camera without triggering the doorbell.
If the doorbell camera used enough power, it would have enough current going thru to always be dinging the doorbell.
That allows some power to go to the doorbell without constant chiming.

I installed it yesterday and the chime instructions from Wyze were not clear. After installing the doorbell outside I tested it and it was set up in the app and working fine without the chime controller. I pressed the doorbell and it made the chime on the doorbell itself and also the chime box inside the house. What I did notice however is that the light ring around the doorbell would only flash orange. A flashing orange light means its reading for pairing. But it was already paired during install and it works fine in the app! I then installed the chime controller properly (after watching a video on how to do it) but the light still continually flashes orange. I'm dealing with Wyze about this now.

Hey Kevin. That is so hard to gauge because most doorbells have different screw alignment. I'm sure you could use one for the existing holes (that's what I did) but will probably have to drill a new one for the second. It's impossible to know until you throw the mounting plate up there but I will plan on drill at least one new hole.

If it’s the same as the cameras, then yes so at that point, I would highly recommend just paying the dollar a month for the subscription service. It’s dirt cheap or pay for the whole year upfront. It’s an even better deal if you have multiple cameras from the same company because of that point, they have an unlimited plan for 10 bucks a month for all your devices.

Very possible a 24v 40VA transformer is optimal for this doorbell. Theory is if it's installed on a circuit with a weaker transformer, when the button is pressed, the doorbell might ring but not as strongly, and a possible small internal battery / capacitor in the Wyze doorbell v2 might keep it from dying in the initial period, until the internal battery dies or the capacitor fails over time, in which case the Wyze V2 doorbell will simply shut off when pressed.

Just the question I ws looking for. Too bad it wasn't like the Ring doorbell that hàd a battery installed within the doorbell housing. The battery lasted 8 to 9 months. Then you'd simply remove the doorbell, take it inside to charge it for a few hours and then screw it back in place next to the front door and you were good to go for another 8 - 9 months! A lot of older homes here in Florida didn't have wired doorbells. Back in the day we never locked our doors and family and friends would just let themselves in and walk around your house yelling for you until you responded!! That sounds so weird to imagine that happening nowadays. Ahhh, the good ole days! Great video. TY.

I iust installed mine yesterday. Even hired a pro to do it. Followed the instructions and it didn't work. He mixed up the wires. We then just got a Dong, but not a Ding. I put everything back to the way it was without the Wyze attachment. Front and Trans wires the way they were before installing the Wyze doorbell. It did not work initially. After waiting at least 5 mins, I tested it again and it worked perfectly. I guess the transformer just needs time to do it's job.
Conclusion: Just install the Doorbell camera and don't change your existing chime wiring. Wait at least 5 mins and test.

I installed v2 to replace v1 yesterday & my house chime does not work either. I may wait the end of the week till Wyze comments on the best ideal solution to this. Someone mentioned earlier that v1 rewiring (wire the two house chime wires together w/ a fuse) may have damaged house chime & hopefully that is not the case.

Wyze markets the VDB V2 as a "Significant upgrade." But that all depends on your needs. In my case it's a significant downgrade. So buyer beware! If you're like me and already have the V1 Wyze Video Doorbell be aware the V1 digital chime accessory isn't compatible with the Wyze VDB V2. It's only compatible with mechanical chimes, and even at that many many people are complaining on the Wyze forums that regardless of what they do they can't get it to work with their particular mechanical chime. Furthermore, Wyze support is clueless about what to do to fix it. But one thing they absolutely discourages (because it's likely to damage the video doorbell) is bypassing the chime controller altogether (as this reviewer did).
One of the reasons I bought the V1 in the first place is it supports multiple chimes. In my case I have one by the front door, another in my workshop/garage, and another in the basement. No such option with the V2. As for backwards compatibility with the V1 digital chime, hardly the first time Wyze has deliberately refused to include backwards compatibility with existing and prior products. Probably not stupidity on the part of their engineers either. It's called "planned obsolescence. In a year they'll probably come out with a VDB V3 along with a "new and improved" Wyze digital chime that's only compatible with the VDB V3.

The power requirement for the Wyze Video Doorbell is AC 16-24V. However, if you encounter any issues, even with the correct power supply, we recommend trying an alternative wiring method as follows:
After installation as guided in the App, If the Mechanical Chime still cannot ring,
    - Switch the Chime Controller Red Wire from the Trans terminal to the Front/Rear Terminal,
    - Leave the White wire unconnected.
This alternative wiring method may resolve the problem. Please let us know if this solution works for you.

One night my doorbell started making a buzzing noise and occassionaly it would ring on its own very lightly. I was being lazy and not wanting to deal with changing my transformer as I sorta figured that is the problem. So I finally bought a new transformer (16v 30va) on amazon for about $25 and then replaced my old one. then I installed the controller as well and now my doorbell works just as intended and it does ring a bit louder now because I believe there is sufficient power acutally being provided to my doorbell. @@TechItBeforeYouWreckIt

If you don’t pay your door bell literally won’t work unless there is at least 5 minutes between button presses

Not true. The doorbell will always ring when the button is pressed.

Just be aware that Wyze is cheap because it’s support is non-existent. They don’t offer a phone number and farm support out to Best Buy, Micro Center, and others. When I called Micro Center, they said they sell Wyze but don’t support them. I bricked a cam pan upgrading the firmware and I have to trash it because support is too frustrating.

What a silly review. Lack of backwards compatibility with the Wyze Chime V1 (which was such a positive in the V1 version) and requiring a legacy chime is a negative, not a positive. This was a very valuable feature that is no longer available. Plus, as he comments, he does not understand how the chime works. Another reviewer who has no clue.

Totally understand your perspective but I'm coming from the perspective of someone who didn't own v1 and already has a legacy chime in my home. As for the chime... read the comments... NOBODY understands what's going on with the chime controller. 🙄 Thanks for taking the time to watch.

@@TechItBeforeYouWreckIt you're missing the point about the chime. There are actually 2 points. One is that v2 departs from v1 and orphans the Wyze Chime. And one that you and many don't understand the use of the capacitor.

@@TechItBeforeYouWreckIt the Wyze Chime was one of the best features of v1. While you didn't have v1, it should still be a detriment. Your existing chime is in only one place. Wyze Chimes could be distributed in far away rooms, basements... Much better

Just installed it and my chime is NOT working. This product is useless garbage because it is not working as described - per specs.
