- In this video we are introduced to Jean Allison an MBE awarded educator and alumni of Edinburgh University and The Reed School of music. A musician and composer who campaigned to engage young people through music but via the synth. An incredible story told by an incredible woman to another wonderful woman of music; Alice Allen.

Are there any unsung heroes of music you'd like to tell us about, even maybe someone we could talk to? Leave in the comments down below... we read them!!! xxx
What a wonderful woman, thank heavens we have people like her
hear hear!
Having been schooled in Scotland and in different parts of England I think the level of encouragement kids get to participate in music making is dependent on a) prevailing local traditions and attitudes to making music and b) what financial resources the school or the child's family may have. Teachers like Jean make all the difference because they infect the children with the enthusiasm for music and find ways to develop that enthusiasm even in the locations where the financial resources are short or there is not much support in the local area for teaching music. Giving a child a pathway into music making, even if only for their own pleasure rather than making a career, is a lifelong gift of enormous value and this should be available to all kids regardless of background, wealth, status etc.
One wonders if music education is a stark signifier of the disconnect between students of all ages desiring to learn and absorb ideas, and teachers who may share those ambitions, but by reason of exam structures and pedagogy feel the need to enforce rules in preference to the acquisition of knowledge. Jean encourages the belief that maybe, just maybe, improvement is within reach. Jean and Alice , thank you!
Ah bless her she deserves a one big thank you on The One Show. 🎉

What is meant by “the B-A-Gs” if that’s what she’s saying?
They didn't want the musical notation -- noteheads on stafflines -- but "the real notes, the B-A-G's". I.e. the "C D E F G A B C" note names instead of abstract notation.
