My music teacher remarked in about 1980, disagreeing with Mr. Terry's choice of equipment, but said "Clark Terry is so good he could do all this stuff on a little toy bugle and still sound great!"

Fantastic. Love the guy, his music, his whole self. Thanks so much for posting. I learned a ton seeing it on paper..

Here you can hear clearly what Miles took from CT's playing

I just listened to it, it's not even the same league. In direct comparison, Miles sounds weak and unimaginative, sorry

Stayed in the chord changes a lot, I didn’t hear anything interesting played here. I’ve heard Clark play way way way more interesting solos than this.

Clark is a master. If you think you can do it better, grab a horn and post a solo for us

@@alexkastner1495 he stayed within the changes a lot here, which is a bit unusual for him, he also trained Josh Sphak, a young player who I spoke with a few times years ago, kid was a monster at age 16. Clark to me is a helluva player, and teacher and good man all around. I’m not sure how my comment caused your thong to transpose itself between your cheeks sir, but I promise it’ll be ok, ok honey? 🍯

Someone who "cannot hear anything interesting played here" seems to me to lack a good 'feel' for jazz and blues. Why can't a solo be brilliant while staying in the chord? Or maybe it depends on one's definition of 'interesting'. I love this solo because it is so smooth and it swings, I cannot listen to it without tapping my feet and smiling...

@@janushsol I may look 24, but I’m about to be 36, and been playing for a long time my friend, my criticism is harsh, for sure. I currently play a Blessing trumpet on a huge Stork 2C mouthpiece with a good G above high G. However if you’d like to hear what I’m comparing this video we watched to, you can check out some of the guys I went to school with. Josh Bruneau, or even Josh Evans. I’m no expert myself, but I can record a video of myself soloing over the same tune as in this video, and send it to you. I’ll also allow you to tell me what scales I’m allowed to use, and even advise me of substitutions that you want me to use over specific chords. Otherwise I’ll use my own theory knowledge and apply it to the changes and see what you think. Let me know
