I remember the old Hecla jug that had this wirewound coily element wound around come sort of ceramic piece and it had the same large plug as this. Just like the old manal toasters that you could get even in the 80's and they were great for thick bread and crumpets and the like.
An old boss of mine told me a pretty gruesome story, from when he was an apprentice electrician (I think in the 60s), about a woman who had used one of these to make herself a hot bath. This brought about her untimely demise.
