+Zack Hartley This leads me to believe the music is masking some of the frequencies of his voice and he isn't screwing up like people think. if you listen very carefully, the grit is there and it sounds pretty spot on.
Halford has always been changing the way he sings this song. I have never heard one version sounding like anyother. He does change every time he sings this. And that pleases me
Man I can not imagine the hell rob halfords lungs must feel doing this song and a few others. Part of the reason rob is my favorite singer is because of how all the way he goes with the songs he dosnt miss one scream that was in the studio version.
When I heard this I thought the recorded version was completely auto tuned. But if you watch the Anaheim 2003 concert he nails this song perfectly so he's legit. I imagine this song is hard as hell to sing like that.
I like the way how people are saying that this performance was a "fail"... seriously? I mean for christ sake, in 91 Halford was 40/41 years old, he's been screaming for a long time in his life with Priest both studio and live. So I would like to see you people bitchin about his voice, to try and do what he's done and still sound amazing at his age!
It doesn't makes sense for me to try and Sing like him because i never went onstage with the proposal of siging this song (and never will), but rob did that and failed, many times, if he can't Sing he shouldn't
Now watch any performance from 2015 on this current tour and he is fucking badass! Put's most of his performances of this song before this year to shame!
Daggerithian It's amazing how much better he sounds singing this song now than back then. Astounding considering his current age and difficulty of the track.
I think the main problem with this performance is that they always play this song too late in the set, when Halford's voice is already tired; add to that the fact that he wasn't exactly in his prime when this took place (he was pushing 40 in 1991). If Priest would've played it among the first 5 songs of the set, then Halford would've been capable of doing a much better job. His 2003 live in Anaheim performance is clear proof of that.
Agreed. That was the reason they played Painkiller earlier part of their setlist at the latter tours. We could hear the deteriorating symptoms which could be clearly detected in other live performances such as The Sentinel where his voice sounds thin and a little bit vicious. - From a shitless slave region of humanism being suffered under hoon-tribe-originated-parasitism and kiki'she' collectivism which is known as the name 'Korea', whose dwellers always steals and begs from Japan's original history which clearly inherited sincere humanity in Ancient Cudara more than its 'original' dwellers in hometown.
This guy must be insane! It was summer time in Rio! 40º celsius! Or more! And I saw him repeat that 10 year later in Rock In Rio III. It was even more insane, it was daytime, and he uses a full leather costume and sings like there is no tomorrow!
Linh Nguyen I've done this on vocal cover but never ever can be compared to Rob..after I'd sung it,I was like "I can't believe Rob done this" btw this song make who plays metal feel proud ;)
Unfortunately Robs voice was already deteriorating by this time he was born in 51 this is 91 so he's roughly around 40 at this time.Lets face it this is not like singing Frank Sinatra.. this is very taxing on the vocal chords and like Halford said his partying and sexual capades we're definitely doing him in you can tell how exhausted and out of breath he looks.. even though he's now up in his sixties under the right circumstances I think he can still sing quite well.. Ripper Owens is almost 50 and he can still do what Harvard was doing in his twenties and thirties still has the ability to hit and sustain the highest of notes. I think the Rippers lifestyle has helped preserve his voice
This song is without question the most difficult one I have ever sung. True, Rob isn't in top form here, but then again, on this tour he was singing each night for 90 minutes straight, and he did it about 5 times a week for almost a year. JP is king!!!
What I find very interesting is that he says "I´m gonna sing 'the painkiller' and everybody in Brazil is supposed to know it. And in fact they know it!!! Awesome!
WOW when i first heard this song i did not think it sounded anything like Judas Priest and i never thought he could sing like he did on the album live but he can. he's one of the greatest singers EVER just behind Freddie Mercury and Bruce Dickinson. ALL HAIL THE METAL GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The great thing about Rob Halford is that he've managed to record the studio version which is unbelievably awesome .. So stop judging this live performance .. If he was a bad singer the song woldn't exist .. Halford's a legend in heavy metal and it's not you who will critisise his talent.
Does anyone of you heard the other songs from that live? All guns blazing was performed in the concert and Rob's voice is PERFECT!So why he can't sing painkiller?I think that when "Painkiller" was recorded,he didn't sang the whole song and recorded it at the same time.He sang parts of the song and then there were sticked together. Also the producers put a lot of effect in his voice in the studio. If you take his voice from this live and put these special effects, you'll have a closer to studio voice
Yep, 1-2 hours concerts week and week out, no way any singers can sing perfectly in every single show. Bruce Dickinson alternate his vocal melody alot even during Maiden 80's concert , some of the high notes are just impossible to nail in concert because you're singing 10-20 songs and moving alot on stage.
I think Painkiller is one of this "so perfect" studio song which cannot be played live, I don't even understand why JP still plays it live... all the greatness of this song comes from its perfection, everything's perfect, the sound, the arrangements, the voice etc, and it doesn't fit with the "unperfect" conditions of a live show... this is a song one can only play when he's at his top...
If I'm not mistaken , this performance is always at the end of their concert that's why he's exhausted, you can clearly hear he can hit and mix his voice he's just out of gas.
He isn't even close to the CD, pretty sad but after touring for a long time it takes it's toll. We're workin on a Priest-tribute right now. I'm the singer and I fix the notes like the original every time I'm in shape but it's a though song. However every time you sing it things get better. You train up certain praces and get muscle memory, bread at the right place and such. Very cool song to perform and also a challenge for the guitarists as well.
Halford does sound pretty rough, almost like he just pulled an all nighter then showed up for the show. Respectfully was and will always be the best vocals of metal, literally the METAL GOD!!
This in one the the hardest to sing live songs ever. Halford does a great job anyway keeping his voice so high. Thats why he is called THE Metal God !
Rob nailed the "pain, pain, killer, killer" part though. You can't deny that.
+Zack Hartley This leads me to believe the music is masking some of the frequencies of his voice and he isn't screwing up like people think. if you listen very carefully, the grit is there and it sounds pretty spot on.
considering how he's doing it, sounds like playback tbh.
@@ghostapostle7225 bruh
He massacred the whole song.
Halford has always been changing the way he sings this song. I have never heard one version sounding like anyother. He does change every time he sings this. And that pleases me
1991 Rock in Rio. I was there...awsome show...Judas, the loudest band of the festival...simply the best...Megadeth in second place were great too...
awesome one of the greatest priest songs
I hope my neighbors like Judas Priest, because I've been blasting their songs all night.
Man I can not imagine the hell rob halfords lungs must feel doing this song and a few others. Part of the reason rob is my favorite singer is because of how all the way he goes with the songs he dosnt miss one scream that was in the studio version.
I wil never forget this very moment!!!!!!!
When I heard this I thought the recorded version was completely auto tuned. But if you watch the Anaheim 2003 concert he nails this song perfectly so he's legit. I imagine this song is hard as hell to sing like that.
+Nick Pastorino : my words, dude my words!!
Wow, this is incredible, this is music
I like the way how people are saying that this performance was a "fail"... seriously? This is amazing!!!!
This is a performance someone should be proud of.
Rob's voice is amazing.
Lots of bands cancel their gigs as soon as the singer feels a little itch in the throat. That man right there is pure metal! He gave everything.
la mejor banda de metal de la historia...
No hay mas (y)
I love this song !! Rob is very frightening here !!
Holy sh*t, that was awesome. I can't believe how tight that band was. Just incredible.
he has such strong vocal cords, just amazing
This song is really HARD to sign and he is still doing it after 20 years

"You can't kill the metal! Metal will live on!" -Tenacious D
Judas Priest owns!! And btw I don't know how Halford has such a huge vocal range but it's amazing!
Now watch any performance from 2015 on this current tour and he is fucking badass! Put's most of his performances of this song before this year to shame!
Daggerithian It's amazing how much better he sounds singing this song now than back then. Astounding considering his current age and difficulty of the track.

Wall Rus I think his voice is really brutal

+Anki Hansen or like donald the duck :D
perfect voice

Linh Nguyen I've done this on vocal cover but never ever can be compared to Rob..after I'd sung it,I was like "I can't believe Rob done this" btw this song make who plays metal feel proud ;)

Some of his most recent live shows sound very good imo.
I mean.. For a 65 year old... He still rocks!
Matooley O'Brien....with the aid of improved equipment and technology, Robs voice live nowadays sounds better then his old performances
I'd have let him give me sexual capades ;)
This song is really HARD to sing and he is still doing it 20 years after.
Rob sounds like a baby
This is a monster kick ass song!
It's a pity the sound quality isn't better, Halford sounds pretty good and does the song justice.
This song is without question the most difficult one I have ever sung. True, Rob isn't in top form here, but then again, on this tour he was singing each night for 90 minutes straight, and he did it about 5 times a week for almost a year. JP is king!!!

The Donald Duck Comments HAHAHAHHAHHAH
Rob is one of my favorite singers of all time but I just couldn't help but laugh at that vid.
he sounds like crap!!!!!!!!!! and I'm a huge fan
How someones voice sounds (in this kind of music) is based on so maaaaaaany things... and sometimes on tour... just all goes wrong.
Yep, 1-2 hours concerts week and week out, no way any singers can sing perfectly in every single show.

If I'm not mistaken , this performance is always at the end of their concert that's why he's exhausted, you can clearly hear he can hit and mix his voice he's just out of gas.
