Didnt see any blood in the boat. You guys bleeding your fish? Also curious how those okuma coldwaters hold up on the troll. I was told the worm gears burn out pretty easily with tuna.
Yes, of course we bleed them :-). We bleed them in the bleed box and gut them and brain spike them. That way it doesn't make a mess on the deck. Then I move them over to the ice slurry tank to quick chill them. After they get ice cold in the slurry, then I move them over to the ice chest and stuff them with ice. A lot of that process is not in the video. As far as the Okuma CW...I have not had any issues with them so far; but I do take them apart and keep them lubed well. The gears to the worm drive & line counter are plastic...so if you have any binding or lack of lubrication, they will get destroyed. But remember that our fish up here are only 20-25# fish - they are not the large fish that people get down south. Some guys will remove the level wind portion and keep the reel as an open face. I do have some TLD25's for Tuna...but I've found that the Okuma's are just fine for few Tuna trips off our coast each year.
@AFaO your running a tight ship. Nice job. I'm also chasing these same cohort of fish our of newport. I've got a hewescraft searunner 190 ht et. I've wanted to take a pair of okuma cedros jigging rods out but only had okuma coldwaters pair up with them. I'll have to give them a try. Thx!
@@gabrielhage5522 ideal? Whatever speed the fish bite at. Reality is, we have general rules of thumb for Albacore. Clones, cedar plugs around 7 to 8MPH. Swimbaits 4 to 7. These are rules of thumb and as the season goes on, slower, deeper and smaller can produce better.
@@schiedler1978 The challenge is, many of the services are pulling from the same satellites, so they are dependent on the same clear sky for a good shot. The last few weeks we have had too much cloud cover to get a clear shot. In the past, I have used NANOOS since it was free. Using SatFish now as it has better tools and the HiDef Sat shots give you potentially a better shot by using multiple feeds from the same day.
Normally, I have those spinning rods ear marked for jigging/casting with swimbait; but they were handy and casted out on this trip while trolling with swimbait. Remember, these are small Albacore here in Oregon/Washington...20 pound range. For bigger fish...yep, Conventional Lever Drag reel is the way to go. We just don't really have those up here. But on a bright note...since they are younger/smaller fish - they also have less mercury 🙂

awesome video, looks like you guys had a great day, wonderful to be able to fish with Dad, very special, well done!!
I so wish I could afford to go tuna fishing. That looks like a great day on the water. Thanks for sharing your trip with us online. 😎🏆✌️
Like the Big slurry tank- Cold Tuna is Good Tuna
Nice video. HOping to get out of Westport this weekend.
Oh, we mix it up and change over to what is getting bit. I’ve heard the theory of keeping everything the same, but haven’t tried it yet.
Hey Scott. I've heard guys go both ways on theories. But, if what you are doing is working...why change 🙂
@@AFaO agreed!
Awesome! I really want to explore some more deep water bottom fish spots.

Nicely done on both the Tuna and Rockfish. Both great table fare. That certainly looked like a friendly ocean. Do you typically troll about 7mph?

If I was using all swimbait, I would probably go a little slower
Wish I Had A Bigger Boat Or Bigger Gas Tank
How far behind the boat are you running your gear?
@@RoamAboutOutdoors hand lines 35’. Middle rods around 50. And the farthest/outside rods 75’
Shotgun rod at 100’
What is the ideal speed for trolling?

What site do you like for chloro and temp shots had terrific but seems overpriced and unreliable wanna try a different one
