Heavy duty gun magnet like for use in vehicles for a steel firearm. Mounted by the fork, you can grab with either hand. I think if you were doing heavy offroad, you might need a lash as a backup retention. I carried often with my ADV bike and unless you are doing jumps it works.
That is why I started carrying all the time. Drunk driver chasing me on my motorcycle. Other drivers called cops. They asked me if I wanted to press charges. I said no. They said have a good day, we'll take care of him.
I have a heavy leather vest with a concealed pocket with 3" elastic "holster" and snap closure on either side and elastic straps to hold 2 magazines and a revolver speed loader. Works well.
I I rode a motorcycle for years until someone pulled out in front of me and I crashed and my legs won't hold it up anymore but I have carried in my pocket for years and years and I will always pocket carry I think it's the best way to go . I am glad you two did this subject for the truth that you were able to share .
I started riding a motorcycle in 1972 and kept doing so until 2024. There was no CCW allowed in AZ at the time other than for Police / Deputies. I Joined the Dept and still rode my own bike. Later I became a Motor. I carried my duty pistol (S&W66) in a Safariland security holster metal reinforced. Later I had a nice duty holster for my Glock 19. Yep I ended a foot pursuit on my bike (KZ1000P) and did so by barely bumping the perp then passing, stopping with a "J" skid and laying the bike down with my pistol out and directed to the suspect. Off duty I carried either my 2.5" 66 at 4"o'clock or my G19 at the same place. I had the collision that ended my career but my duty weapon stayed in the holster even though I went flying a bit and rolled on the ground. Later after retiring I started wearing a fanny pack with blue jeans. In the last years I rode I went to cargo pants and put the pistol in the flap covered right front pocket.
I’ve been wanting to see something on motorcycle carry for a while now this needed to be covered. Will get a watch later but interacting now for the algorithm
Is it possible to get an autographed copy of Roy's book? Roy's autograph, by the way. Returning to the topic, one of my favorite sayings is (from Shakespeare), "Discretion is the better part of valor." It applies in motorcycling (not riding into a lightning storm or snow) and defensive situations.
I got mine from Amazon four days ago. Love it. Then I saw the picture of the Whitney Wolverine. Got me one many years ago. I bring it out once in while. Always draws attention. Great Book Richard
Couldn't agree more! These are my two favorite carry options for my touring moto. Brent is correct, ride or shoot. Don't attempt both at the same time.
Got my copy of Roy's The Insider yesterday. Has a place of favorites on bookshelf with Duke"s Shooting Iron and John Taffin"s Book of 45 cal and Book of Double Action Sixguns. Great publications all.
I ride a 3 wheel Canam Spyder being disabled so that I can keep riding. I just got a Leather vest that has an inside ccw pocket on both sides that have a restraining band holster inside both pockets. Pretty neat for $80 or so and they also have strong button snaps. 🤠
Gene, Brent rides one too and he had something wrong with the drive belt, etc. The engine would rev but the belt didn’t turn. If you have any ideas drop him a note at editor@gunsmagazine.com and tell him I sent you. Roy
Keep it in your tankbag.its secure on the bike and if you crash you don't land on the gun. It could bruise or break something if landed on. You have access to the tank bag with both hands and you can take the bag with you when off the bike.
I have both a street bike and a dual sport machine. I always carry a gun on my person and/or on the bike. But, like Roy, it's mostly for having the gun when I get where I'm going. Also like Roy, my thoughts are to either ride away from the need to fight, or get off the bike and get in the fight to win and survive if you can't ride away, but you can't really do both at the same time. Life isn't Mission Impossible or The Avengers...
The old police motorcycles (Harley, Indian) have the throttle on the left hand grip. They also used a foot clutch and tank shift. This was predicated on the idea that an office COULD thus use his handgun. :)
I never tried it but when I was riding a lot of dirt I really liked the idea of a tank or handlebar bag for a gun. I was riding private land where reducing the snake and varmint population would have been desirable. My plan was to get one of the cheap armscor 38 specials and whatever bag I could find on sale but I pretty much quit riding dirt before I convinced myself it was worth 300 bucks or so to do it. The repro m1 carbine motorcycle scabbards were also tempting and would’ve paired nicely with a pawn shop 22 or shotgun but I knew as soon as I tried that I’d dump the bike and have a broken gun.
Never had an issue carrying either my 1911 or Glock 19 in a good shoulder holster while riding ,either under my jacket or cut,or if in open carry states and hit weather id just put it on over a T-shirt. But usually had some kind of vest or cutoff.
I carry my hangun in a RH Bianchi 84 military holster. It has a full flap with a VERY POSITIVE latching system. I carry it on my left side, crossdraw, to keep my rifle from banging into it when slung. It's not FAST to access, but reasonable. I have drawn that gun "Cavalry" style many times with my left hand. The reason I chose that holster is that there's NO WAY I'm going to loose it AND the handgun is well protected.
That works. I worked at Bianchi as the LE sales director when I retired from the PD in ‘98. John B. had left, but I got to know him pretty well. There was a wall in the R&D department with the history of the military holster development. i wish I had that wall now! Roy
I carry a gun while riding but it's not for shooting while riding, It's for when I'm at the gasoline station filling up or in a restaurant or anywhere when I'm NOT riding. I carry cross draw where it's easier to unzip the jacket (All The Gear All The Time ATGATT!) to get the gun through the opening rather than trying to pull up the jacket.
I have my Wife talked into a used, '90s, Honda Goldwing. I just don't want the trouble of getting the endorsement. BUT my Wife said she'd go with me and get her's too. That'd make it more fun.
This was in interesting topic. I seem to remember Rambo did a fair job of getting away from trouble (for a moment) by just riding his (stolen) motorcycle away from the scene. 😂 It does make me wonder about one of my problems: I live on a farm and have problems with coyotes, groundhogs, and similar critters that eat my chickens. I usually see them when I’m on the mower or tractor. I wonder what insights y’all have on this situation. I’ve tried various pistols and holster setups, but none seem to be ideal. (Think dust and debris.) BTW, I only make shots while stationary. Great video.
Chris, I keep a Taurus Judge in a field holster zip tied to my tractor roll bar. Two loads of .410 and 3 of .45 Colt. I also have a sort of well worn “farm” .22 auto rifle I stash on the mower for just those situations you describe! Roy
@@fmgpubs Interesting choices. I’ve been so concerned with “carrying “ a certain firearm, that I didn’t think to mount a holster/sheath on the tractor or mower. I think I found a new project! Thank you!
Just buy some cheap nylon flap holster on eBay or Amazon. For thre long gun, I mounted one of those sets of “Y” shaped holders that use elastic bands to hold the rifle in place. People use ‘em on ATVs and things like that. Roy
Thank you! You are a wealth of information. I got your book on my Christmas list for that reason, but I might need to nudge the wife a little extra in that direction.
The police department motorcycles in our town have ARS in a scabbard at the back of the motorcycle.. but I'm sure it's not for the cop to use while he's actually operating the motorcycle 😂
I was hoping for twin M2's on the forks and some sort of James Bond style device that dropped spike strips off the back at the touch of a metal switch under a flip-up cover. 😢 Now I need to watch Mad Max again to get other ideas. Thanks for nothing guys...lol
Carrying on my motorcycle is not for defense while I'm riding.. it's just so I have the gun on me after I dismount... Perhaps something like a Kimber pepper blaster mounted in a holster actually on your motorcycle for dogs and stuff like that you know pepper spray..
Motorcycle vs dangerous pedestrian: motorcycle wins. Dangerous automobile vs motorcycle: automobile wins. It's a matter of mass. Yes, a motorcycle is far more stable at speed than all the uninformed or inexperienced people will claim. They are hard to knock over at speed. Yet, impacts from 2-ton vehicles with a murderous driver is generally dangerous to motorcyclists. A firearm in these situations may not be of much help.
If you watch Sons of Anarchy and Myans they have running gun battles on bikes. To me it looks like they’d run into stuff shooting behind themselves lol 🤠
I found this kinda entertaining but I’m not to sure about you guys. It’s plainly obvious y’all ride either Harleys or metric cruisers, which are entirely different from sportbikes, UJM/standards, sport touring bikes, and other bikes with a more neutral body position. To say nothing of DP/off-road. Different rides require different solutions. And different guns, too. I personally rode a ZRX1100 in Georgia and Missouri and carried an M&P40c or G19 in a Ken Null OWB horsehide holster almost exclusively. Any extras went in a tankbag. You can break down most AR’s and pack them crosswise in a top bag or the like, same with shotguns. About the only time I had to do anything awkward was some years ago when my late dad passed his sporterized vz24 on down to me and I rode from Kansas back to Missouri with it strapped across the back of my bike in a soft case. I had some odds and ends in a small duffel but it was still pretty unmistakeable! Oddly no one ever crowded me much on that ride, I wonder why? 😂 I no longer ride any more, my hip has gone out I’m sorry to say. But I do think that both the gun and motorcycle security industry need to be more creative sometimes when it comes to designing secure, competitively priced and useful products for transporting both handguns and long guns on motorcycles of a variety of makes and models, be they sportbikes or cruisers. Where there’s a will there’s often a way.
I used to ride a couple of sport bikes, but at least to me, the rules apply. I've generally rode Gold Wings, Bigger BMWs, a Valkyrie or three and one or two bigger Yamahas. Roy
