    00:00 Introduction
A Rolex wristwatch tops the wish-list of many men, but you might be surprised that personally, even though I admire the history of the company and what they’ve done with it, I’m not one of those men.
    7 Reasons I'd Never Buy A Rolex:
00:52 1. Rolex Charges not only for Quality, but also for “Brand Name” Status
The Rolex “brand” is too much of what I would be paying for with a given watch. Similarly, the value that used Rolex watches yield in the marketplace is mostly related to supply and demand, not because the watches are inherently superior to their competitors.
02:11 2. Rolex Watches are a Mass-Market Product, Not Necessarily Artisanal
One of the reasons I am so infatuated with classic men's style is that even though you can take similar or even same items, you can put your own spin on things and create your own unique style. When I have to make a choice between a good mass-market product and a good artisanal product, I choose the artisanal product 99% of the time.
03:46 3. Buying a Vintage Rolex is Not Without Challenges
I'm a big fan of vintage items for many reasons; one of them is that just by nature, they're often unique items because they're no longer produced, the original items maybe have been worn out or were destroyed so what's left is naturally a limited edition. Also, back in the day, things were often made to last whereas today, things are designed to break three days after the warranty expires. Because of those reasons, I still buy a lot of things vintage even though I can afford to buy the new version of it.
05:14 4. Rolex Watches are Aggressively Counterfeited
The fakes are produced in such big numbers that the quality of them is actually rather good even at a much lower price point. There's also a lot of OEM parts, meaning parts that are exactly like the original part but they're not original Rolex, and when you repair your watch and service it, they can be put in there.
06:30 5. Most Rolex Models Aren’t a Good Fit for My Personal Style
My style is more formal and more dressed up than most men out there and because of that, I prefer dress watches.
    07:50 6. A Rolex Watch is a Status Symbol (That I Don’t Feel a Need to Have)
As you know, I run my own Business, the Gentleman's Gazette website, and the Fort Belvedere retail e-commerce accessories. I'm not doing million-dollar sales deals in boardrooms across corporate America but if I was doing that, I think I would strongly consider buying a Rolex watch because it can indicate success and it can signal to the other person this guy is serious.
08:40 7. Personally, Watches Just Aren’t a Passion of Mine
If you know me, you know that I'm truly passionate about a lot of things, however, watches is not one of them. For example, if I drive a fast car, I feel very emotionally attached to it, I feel alive. When I see a nice watch, I like the look of it but emotionally, it leaves me cold. I mean, I honestly like the look of certain watches, right? I like the Reverso, I like the Tank Americaine, I like the Royal Oak, I like the Patek Phillippe Calatrava or some watches from A. Lange & Sohne, however, when push comes to shove and I have to decide to put money down to buy that watch, I decide to spend my money on other things even though I could afford to buy that watch.

Although expensive, Rolex is practically a discount watch compared to some of the other brands he mentioned. The Patek Philippe brand alone makes Rolex look like Hamilton (and that Calatrava is one of the "affordable" ones). I won't buy Rolex because I would rather buy a cheaper watch that still looks great and is of good quality. I know it won't hold its value and I don't care. Because if I feel like it, I'll save up for a much nicer watch than Rolex and pass it on to the kid one day.

Someone once told me that if you are buying something such as paintings or jewelry, buy what you like not what is in or perceived to be an investment. So if you like stamps pay what you feel comfortable with and what you can afford. Same holds true for watches. I like mechanical watches, having been in Silicon Valley when digital watches came out and knowing how they are made. I like the details of a mechanical watch much like the details of a car or plane. I also like watches that have a connection to aviation so Breitling, Omega and Rolex.

I'm 61 years old I bought my first Rolex from a friend of mine whose family owned a jewelry store in Pittsburgh it was a Submariner that he used to wear on his wrist I paid $450 for it in 1975 I was just turning 15 I knew what a Rolex was because of him back then that watch retailed for about $800 nobody had a Rolex back then it was nothing like it is now I appreciated it for its quality and uniqueness. As time went on I had many Rolexes because I could buy them cheap from him basically it cost. In high school I was a Rolex dealer LOL when I was 18 I bought my father a two-tone oyster quartz which was not actually a very desirable watch because it was quartz. I got tired of them because everyone started wearing them and soon fell in love with Patek Philippe nobody knew what they were unless you were a real hardcore watch connoisseur I have probably had a dozen over the years all the lower end stuff nothing six figures or more. As an Omega (Moonwatch) owner I can confirm that people don’t “call them out”, perhaps because they don’t care or they don’t want to “give you the satisfaction” because they think you want to boast with it. Some of us just like watches, nice clothes and luxury cars not because we want to boast but just because. Everyone has their own taste, don’t let anybody “school” you about what you should or shouldn’t like.

This video was probably made at the same time as the other Rolex video, but just in case: the 'face' and the 'dial' of a watch is basically the same thing - the flat disc behind the crystal and hands of the watch (the crystal being the clear covering that protects the hands and dial from outside forces). On many watches, especially dive watches and GMT watches, there is an outer ring that often can be turned, either for timing a dive or for keeping track of another time zone. On the Rolex GMT shown in the video this ring is blue and red. This outer ring is called a bezel.

800k per year means a lot of people have rolex watches, they don't usually break in one year, so that means there's more and more millions of rolex watches in the market every year. Compare that to some premium items, like certain handbags, they may only make a few dozen, few hundred at the most. People like to feel unique or original, and even if the price tag is high, it doesn't feel so premium knowing there's 500,000 other people out there with the same exact watch. Also if your circle of friends are mostly relatively successful in life, have a decent job, have a home, aren't living way above their means, for them to have at least one rolex watch that they wear to fancy occasions isn't that far fetched. I mean median household income in the usa has been over 50k for a long time, and that average is brought down by situations where people are on welfare and that money isn't counted in their income, and 1 person in the household has a part time job at mcdonalds. Also you can buy some of the less sought after models from previous years for a lot cheaper than the inflated price that rolex watches are sitting at today.

Nice video. You don’t need to own a Rolex to have a nice watch nor do you require one to show success. A reward of a timepiece should be of what YOU like not what is socially known and accepted.
The are a great many watch manufacturers today producing timepiece as good or better than Rolex and many at a fraction of the cost of what Rolex is charging.
Perhaps you need to look a some microbrand watches and see what is on offer, you might be pleasantly surprised. Added bonus is that many of the microbrand watches are produced in limited numbers so once they are gone you may never see one again. This brings in exclusively...its nice to own a high quality timepiece that not many own or can get.

Fj Fj. There are so many fantastic microbrand watch manufacturers out there today the world is your oyster, of course choosing is totally subjective, but these should get you started as their quality is unquestionable often worth many times the asking prices; Creux, Nomos Glashutte, Christopher Ward, Gorilla, Mk II, Axios who are a subsidiary company of Zelos.
However, if you are stuck on a name vice quality then you need to only turn to those timepieces offered by the Swatch Group.

    • @OneTalaw
      @OneTalaw 4 роки тому +1

Fj Fj. Most watch manufacturers worldwide use a form of the ETA movement, copied or sometimes modified but there is no ETA on anyone’s watch dial.
Few manufacturers produce truly in-house movements and if they do, they are NOT a microbrand.
Just look at Bremont (once a microbrand) started early this century and in less than a decade were producing luxury timepieces worldwide. They produce a quality product (subjective taste for their models) and to that big in such a short period of time, they heavily relied on marketing and their is no one bigger that relies on marketing than Rolex.

I agree, my favourite wrist watch is my Tavannes Submarine, Swiss import marks on the solid silver case date it to 1917, still keeps good time (only gains 3 minutes in 24 hours, perfectly acceptable for a vintage watch). An expert told me around 2000 were produced between 1915 and 1918, the watch was produced at the request of 2 British submarine comanders who wanted a waterproof and anti-magnetic watch that could be worn both on deck and inside a submarine, the British Royal Navy had the largest submarine fleet at the time. So the history makes it special, what also makes it special (unlike the average rolex) is the expert told me he would expect no more than 10% of the original watches would still be working 103 years later, so maybe 200 or so left worldwide that still keep good time. So when I wear this watch I don't expect to ever meet anyone wearing the same watch, now that is what I call style...

I've have a Rolex 5513 new since 1984. I've just had it serviced (very expensive) so I will not wear it very often. My favourite day to day watch is a G-Shock MR-G Black Titanium, Solar powered, Blue Tooth and Atomic Clock accurate to the split second. Completely waterproof and shock proof. Completely self adjusting and doesn't need a battery ever. It is very difficult to scratch also.

Your opinon has been noted and summarily dismissed as click bate because you don't like watches and in my opinion your taste in watches conflicts with mine and most other people. Stick to what you know. Cheers

Could have not said it better mate!
I own a few rolex watches. Clearly this guy has no taste in watches.
Rolexes are not flashy watches, they are not meant for you to show it off.
Its a crown for every achievement. You buy it a certain point in life once you've achieved your goals.
      Terrible Watch Advice.

Personally I find them the most comfortable watch to wear even more then an AP or a Patek. It’s a watch you can wear and forget you have a watch on your wrist. As for the vintages you have to make sure you buy them from a reputed dealer.

I really think an Omega Constellation pie pan dial would fit you perfect.

Instead of a Rolex I would get a Glasshutte Original ,JLC, or a Nomos Zurich Weltzeit if we talking anything dressy; If we talking sporty I'm going with Zenith El Primeros all day!

Nice to see I'm not the only one sporting the same cufflinks in different colours left and right. Sometimes.

The only one Rolex I like is no date sub. It’s sporty and quite nice to wear it casually. That being said, second hand Omega speedmaster is much better in term of look and value if you ask me. I also have my love for Jager LeCoultre, but that is just out of my price range for now.

“The value in the secondary market is related to supply and demand and not because of inherent quality over other watches”... what an odd statement... the core concept of modern day economics is supply and demand that’s how everything works... commodities, real estate, the stock market... I could go on...

      To a certain extent.
Some things are just expensive because they are trendy or popular.
They've built on the brand name and started overreaching with regards to their prices.

dionisios kosandianos yes - the market for selling stainless sports watches was great last year - I sold a Sub and GMT last year and made $ on each over what I paid a few years ago

Rolex is a smart moveonly if you plan to sell it later and only if you actually sell it at the end. If you buy it to keep it its not important at all if its going to go up or down in price.

I bought an omega sea master and I want a rolex now to build my collection. Sure, I could have gotten a more accurate $20-40 electric watch. Rolex has very classic watches, that’s why they are popular among the watch community. And they are associated with status now, that’s why people who care about their image(maybe too much) but don’t know about watches want them, if it gets them into watches I think it’s cool.
I can also wear a fancy watch in shorts and a t-shirt and I feel good. I’m carrying some art on my wrist :).
