Dear Hiking Dancer, I think you are amazing and I love your channel. I also love Lil’Chap’s channel. You two are great. But it’s clear you two have different ideas on what a thru hike should be. You two set a fine example of why it’s so important to “Hike your own hike.” Yes a thru hike is a challenge and isn’t always fun. But that doesn’t mean that one person’s definition of a thru hike is better than another’s. They’re just different. I am proud of you, wanting to walk like a dog and therefore you chose to go out on your own for a couple of days and then rejoin the pack. I hope you two can honor your differences and that you’re not suggesting that fear is really the difference between your hikes. I see it more as concern. Fear is an emotion that effects to your physical being. To be concerned about rain and wind that disrupts your comfort on a thru hike isn’t really fear. It’s concern about comfort. Again, fear is one of the most basic human emotions and it really doesn’t include concern for comfort. You two are hiking your own hikes differentiated by the concern for the comfort. You are both hiking your own hikes and that’s admirable. Don’t let it drive a wedge between you. You are both right as rain.
I really loved your "banter" today. Fear can do more to hold people back than we realize. I'm going to try to pay more attention to my fears and to determining whether they're in the category of 'good warnings' or 'needless roadblocks'. Thank you for giving me so much to think about over coffee this morning!
26.7!! BIG miles! It’s remarkable what can be accomplished when it’s just you, your thoughts, and a narrow path! The tramily is important, but alone miles are equally important! As with your A-T hike, I’m enjoying the journey, and thank you for taking us along! ONWARD!
Plus One, I emjoyed all the time you were on trail. Starting the train and hiking as far as you did is a big achievement. Most people never take the chance to do something as challanging as this. Have fun and continue ti be great!
Much appreciated! It was a fun ride - even though abit shorter than planned, however I left home with alot of unfinished project, that just called for me more. I did hike half the PCT 2022 so will see what the future holds. I'm deffiently not done with the PCT :) Cheers for all the support to our tramily! Stay positive and follow your dreams!
I love your mindset of not letting fear be in the driver's seat. Yes, it's definitely important to assess risk and danger. But, not letting the fear of things that are well within your ability to accomplish to overcome you.
I’m a long distance section hiker and have never had a tramily, but after listening to you l can’t help but think of Dixie and her friend Perk hiking the PCT. Circumstances dictated that they hike many miles apart, and she met up with other tramilies along the way and had great support through the Sierra. I believe they eventually met back up and finished the trail together.

Fear vs common sense caution is a fine line and quite personal. Your level of risk that says proceed with caution is another person fear so don’t judge! Getting more comfortable with yourself and your skills as time goes by on the trail will lower the fear level but having NO FEAR is stupid. I will agree that being paralyzed by fear is bad but I’ve not seen that from your tramily yet.

I must say , being like a dog is a healthy way to be- glad we have this in common! Your accent makes me smile while the banter is going on- thanks for being you! 😂❤
Fear is created from the unknown. Not doing something is not overcoming the unknown. Control and knowledge is the solution to fear. The fact that you are prepared, you are warm, you have the tools, spikes, ice axe and the ability to do it. So it is better for you to put yourself in a slightly uncomfortable situation so that you gain experience and that will give you more confidence and less fear. Ultimately that control will bring you happiness because fear and uncertainty is what causes a person's mind to be anxious overwhelmed and miserable. Thanks...now I'm rambling 😁
I agree so much with what you said. Fear sucks, because sometimes we talk ourselves into being afraid of something that isn’t something to be afraid of. So sorry Plus One had to cut his hike short 😢 We'll all miss you Plus One! ❤
Great trail banter! Being able to identify when fear is rational vs. irrational is key. Fear can be debilitating if one gives into it. Your common sense and self-awareness will take you all the way to Canada!🌻
The trail provides long stretches of time to think things through in ways that we don’t normally get with the distractions of the outside world. I watch enough hiker videos and I hike enough by myself that I recognize when someone hits the point where you step into the world of trail philosopher. Your essay on fear was very well thought out. Thanks for that.
Another great hiker that I'm following (he's doing the CDT), said in his last video that he had a conversation with another hiker and the question arose, "what makes great hiker?". They both came up with the same answer, which was "attitude". It doesn't matter if you hike 5 miles or 30 miles a day. If you feel great at the end of the day and want to push on with all your heart, that's a great hiker. And you young lady, have the "attitude" in spades. Oh, and BTW, I call the guy a great hiker, cause his averaging close to 30 miles a day and he also has the attitude. Hike your own hike, even if you have to do it alone.
Another great video and I loved you thoughts on fear. Unfortunately, I come from a family that struggles with fear, anxiety, and depression. It beat my brother and he killed himself a number of year ago. I just buried my mother Saturday. She died at 86 and was consumed by fear and anxiety and it was so sad that so much of her life was so miserable because all she did was worry and fret. Unfortunately, it is easy to say "fear not" and so difficult to do, especially when it is in your DNA. I have worked very hard to overcome and live past the fear and anxiety in my DNA. Your points are spot on. Life is so much better, and fuller, and richer when you don't allow yourself to be ruled by fear. I remember your fears when you first started the AT and the fear of the naysayers who told you you wouldn't last 2 weeks. You beat them and you beat the fear. Thank you for that. Hike on!
12:20 I believe this is Prickly Phlox (Linanthus californicus) but it could be a pink variety of Granite Gilia (Linanthus pungens). 13:46 Golden Yarrow (Eriophyllum confertiflorum). Very common in southern California and the southern Sierra. 13:49 Felt Leaved Yerba Santa (Eriodictyon crassifolium). I like these and want one for my garden. It's actually closely related to Poodledog Bush, but is harmless. Native people use it for teas and medicinal syrups.
Another great day on trail. Those Prockly phlox are pretty and so pink. You have a long trek in front of you and hiking your way is important. Alone or togeather you will all hopefully get there. Have a blase . Sorry Plus 1 stopped his hike. Happy trails.
Awesome views, Julianne. All through the day. Beautiful country. You weren't ranting. You were preaching and that is OK. Fear can be a real hindrance to success, no matter your quest. Anyway, don't get me started. Lol. Love your videos. Hey, that pizza looked great. You take care. Stay safe. Anchor your tent well, just in case. Lol. See you tomorrow.
Fear mongering is ever present on all trails, but some fear or concern for personal safety is necessary in potentially dangerous areas. Hikers have lost their lives in those mountains/deserts and some have not been found. In this case, your friends have recovered and hiking onward!
Fear can be involuntary sometimes as well. In the last few years, hiking in the Canadian Rockies where I’m based, I’ve seen a few instances of strong men almost paralyzed into inaction by vertigo. Somehow they managed to go quite far up a mountain but having to come down was a significant struggle for their brains - something to do with angles and slope degree. To the point where one young man was frogging along downhill on his bum. I was somewhat sympathetic because my wife has the same involuntary vertigo issue. I was thinking about this watching Lil Chap in your video then seeing his own reaction in his own video. Thanks for the videos. Have fun, stay safe.
Lol I love hearing your thoughts and perspective on things! It makes sense that you would record more when on your own! Glad we can be your "virtual" companions! Haha funny the comparison of your hike to a dog..motivated by walking and food lol! Aww..sad to hear about Plus one not continuing. I feel that sometimes fear can be a challenge because you want to be cautious, but not let fear overcome us in preventing us from doing things.
Thank you! I hiked half the PCT in 2022, so might come back at some point and do that half - I'm deffiently not done with the PCT as a whole - Just needed a better timing with other things in life going on
These are some really beautiful walkways! You must be loving the views. Healthy fear is good to have, but the fear that works against you is the kind to be aware of so as not to debilitate. Good tent quality, oh the banter is good, I like listening 😂❤ 🌱🌿🧘🏼🙏
Re fear on trail. I fully agree, you are so correct. When I did the PCT so many skipped the Dixie burn area for whatever reason and they justified it by telling themselves it was for their safety. Yeah there's some risk involved but also it can definitely be managed and my year was a much lower snow year in the Sierra than you have - even less excuse to be that risk avoidant. I don't care what people do but take issue when they pretend to do the same thing as us who hike it. Some even got a ride to hike SOBO to the border crossing for the 'gram.🤣
Early in my sales career, a seasoned sales professional told me that people make decisions in life based on fear and greed. I thought he was incorrect with that assessment of human behavior . But I quickly learned that he was correct. Fear is a strange motivator of decision making for sure. It can paralyze you if you let it. You have the right attitude about fear. Hike on with confidence in your decision making abilities !!
Roadrunner fear can definitely hinder our path but please done assume it is always fear that changes one’s path sometimes it’s just wanting to enjoy a more enjoyable path.
Another great video. It's so cool. I drive by the Mill Creek Picnic area about once a month and never knew that the PCT ran right through there. I'm going to put that stretch of the trail on my list. Thanks again for sharing your adventure with us.
Love your Jumanji analogy. Great movie by the way. Both Robin Williams and The Rocks version. Yay for the sleeping pad! Great trail conversation today. I'd liken it to being on your "soap box", not Banter = "the playful and friendly exchange of teasing remarks." Sad to hear about Plus One. lol at being a dog. Too funny. Ooh, that pizza looked good. Great job on your 26.7 miles. Be safe and happy trails! :)
I'm really enjoying the way you and Lil'Chap do your videos. My PCT videos from last year were similar in format. I will likely do the same when I try to go SOBO next year. You are really correct about the fear mongering. There is a LOT of it out there on social media. As hikers, it is best just to avoid social media while on the trail. Your doing great. I like what you said about your practicing self-arresting. I have spent a lot of time in the mountains (I lead a trip up Denali in '95) and it sounds like you have a great attitude. You mention that you have a lot of confidence now. That will likely lead you to push yourself into more challenging terrain, and there you will discover how little you know, but you will continue to learn and you will be fine. It is part of the natural learning process. Make sure you practice every chance you get. I live near Salem, OR, so if you need anything at Willamette Pass, McKenzie Pass, or Santiam Pass, I should be able to get there. We have a couple of guest rooms if you (and anyone with you) need a zero. We do have a crazy dog, so you have to love dogs. We had a hiker spend three nights with us last year. Good luck out there!
I enjoy watching your videos. I like how you speak about the importance of understanding fear. Addictive behaviors make it challenging to kick a fearful mindset. We will link survival to memories that involve uncomfortable feelings. Unfortunately many people don’t have the tools to overcome those emotions. Life experience is the only teacher.
Smart young lady. I'm 58 years old and fear has been a thorn for me forever. But I've found the best way to deal with fear is make the first step toward the thing you fear. It gets much easier after that.
Enjoyed your banter about your attitude to fear. I believe fear can paralyze a person and take away many opportunities. I have great admiration for your independence but I do feel hiking alone has risk and hope you continue many portions on the PCT with your Tramily. Hope Lil Chap and you discussed your need for alone time prior to the hike. Loving your daily videos. Oh to be young again (I'm 76).
It makes sense talking to the camera more when you're alone. It feels like there's a companion. Connection is critical for our emotional health. Do what you gotta do, right?! I think a lot about fear. I believe "fear" isn't the real problem. It's simply our warning sign. WHAT are we actually fearing? More often than not, we're fearing some kind of potential pain which could be the result of a basic need but being met such as a good spot for our Shelter which then could compromise our Sleep. That's 2 basic needs. However, I think most fear in daily life is centered around love & connection and the fear of a relationship causing us pain. Rejection, shame, judgement, etc. all cause real emotional pain. And given so many of us have experienced that pain in the past, we guard against and fear it in the future. My $0.02. ☮️❤️🤝
Having one thru hike under your belt made you figure out the whole fear thing. You can't be able to complete such a feat without being able to decern between rational fear and unrational fear. You worked through all that having hiking thousands of miles already. I am sure your tramily gained so much wisdom from you and you can't be in a position to keep guiding on them, eventually you have to focus on what your needs are for your thru hike. It is your thru hike and although you are wise to the thru hiking thing there are new things for you to learn and experience. Tramilies are great and all but they can restrict you from getting your needs met. As the #1 thru hike rule is :hike your own hike" can sound cliché but no truer words can be said in thruhiking.
As long as there isnt meters falling from the sky i think you will be ok 😅 you know what your capable of doing. You know what your able to do allways trust your gut Instinct and if it feels wrong then dont so it. just be safe out there ❤️ 🙏
Yes, facing one's fears helps with growth. You faced your fear of heights at the fire tower. Practicing with your ice axe in an area you could have just slid down gave you the skills and confidence for when you might need to use it. Got to go like a dog LoL Looks like the dogs are eating very well. Enjoy your delicious-looking pizza! Hike~~On~~>
Hallo Juliane, tolle Videos!
Yep, food, sleep, exercise, you're a dog, same as the rest of us. Really, life is just the basics in different forms. Plus One was fun to have around, he will be missed 😢 Most of my hiking is solitary and I prefer it that way even though I enjoy people. But I'm curious and want to see more and know more, so there's a constant push in me to do something else for awhile. People need space.
More foreshadowing. Any seasoned hiker has had similar experiences - it can build into resentment that your trip (maybe only?) is being negatively impacted. You need to find someone/group that has the same abilities and desires. While I usually hiked solo, I did have a chance to go on a few May alpine trips with an equally capable/enthusiastic parter. Man, that was a blast - someone as excited, motivated and eager to check shit out as me. (Pre covid; after we both got busier so our schedules don't align.)
I keep thinking if someone is afraid of what’s happening in the southern part of the PCT, then there is no way they’re going to make it through the Sierras. I’m betting you can do it. Not so sure about the rest of your group.
5:30 Best quote about fear: " Let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself-nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance." US President Franklin D. Roosevelt 👍
To plagiarize, “the only thing to fear is fear itself“ I think it’s super healthy to have cautioned respect for anything that’s challenging, it appears that you have had no issues and continue to amaze your UA-cam followers by conquering the obstacles along the way! Keep on truckin!
True ADVENTURE is pushing yourself beyond what you thought were your limits. Knowing when to bail is gained by experience. Young climbers die. Old climbers have gained KNOWLEDGE!!
Don't step on snek or fear the Reaper ;) Fear with a rational plan of avoiding danger is a good thing. My Jagdterrier was fearless and I saved him from stepping on a copperhead that was laying across the trail by jerking him backwards with the leash and killing the snake with a walking stick.
You call it fear, but what about is it just their instinct or an hunch of knowing your own hiking experience/capibility making them question doing it.. Hike your own hike as they say.. Not everything is black and white. You’re doing great and I look forward to the rest of your journey.

I like the banter!
Love the adventure! You do a great job on your videos.
Love following you on your journey! You are a great hiker!!!
Great job on knocking out the miles.
4:46 Reminds me of the view from Lake in the Clouds Hut in the Whites…
Been following since the AT love your videos your doing a great job hike you own hike
Sad that plus 1 didn't get to finish, he is a good soul. Safe hiking to all.
Subscribed and wishing you the best
Girl!!! 26mi!!! You go!!! Fear - you are so right!!! Oh the views - stunning!!! Praying God’s richest blessings as you blaze your trail!!!
Dog reference is hilarious. My dog will quiet literally walk/run till he passes out, he loves the freedom let alone if there is food 😂
Yay I found you 😊,
I'm really enjoying the way you and Lil'Chap do your videos.
My highest mileage on the AT (and ever in my life) was 27 miles (thus earned my trail name!)…. Your mileage really impresses me!!!!
Smart young lady. I'm 58 years old and fear has been a thorn for me forever. But I've found the best way to deal with fear is make the first step toward the thing you fear. It gets much easier after that.
I'm 59 and have found the same!
Easy hike today..seems you can do bigger miles on the PCT>>>>great views too!!
Another great video with amazing views! You make a great motivational speaker and it does make a lot of sense. I know you. Enjoyed that pizza.
Knowledge conquers fear every time. The more knowledgeable you are the less fear you will have.
My $0.02. ☮️❤️🤝
Well said.
Minus Plus One Equals Zero. Kierkegaard would be proud.
I love when you put in abit math into my name, part of why I loved it in the first place. Being an accountant at home :)
- PlusOne
@@allanzachoPlusOne you balanced the pct books by leaving!
The rate that your going I feel you'll catch up to your new tramily. Keep on a pluggin!
Exactly. Every year there are multiple groups forming up @ KM to hit it.
Wow 26,7 miles 💪
Yes I heard , have a good day a good day . I'm making coffees . ❤
Fear is the mind killer.
I'm making coffee. I was something in the news . Have a good day today
Fear can definitely be a good thing as long as we are careful, at the same time. Enjoy your pit stop for food and happy trails.🤘🏻🥾⛰️
Digiorno's? 😃I think motivation was working more than fear today seeing as you did over 26 miles!
You are right
Rogue Runner!😉
Intense night, or in tents night....(sorry, couldn't resist)
Without fear, there is no courage
Courage is being afraid, but doing it anyway! 👍
As long as there isnt meters falling from the sky i think you will be ok 😅 you know what your capable of doing. You know what your able to do allways trust your gut Instinct and if it feels wrong then dont so it. just be safe out there ❤️ 🙏
Wow! Wow! Wow! “Roadrunner-ing.” That’s what just happened.

“I’m a Roadrunner, Baby!” 🎶🎶 Beep! Beep!
Yep, food, sleep, exercise, you're a dog, same as the rest of us. Really, life is just the basics in different forms. Plus One was fun to have around, he will be missed 😢
Most of my hiking is solitary and I prefer it that way even though I enjoy people.
0:34 “In tents”…I see what you did there!

Did you expect the rain and wind? Was there anywhere to zero to avoid the rain?
How does the PCT compare to the TRT?
Did +1 get sick or hurt?
I keep thinking if someone is afraid of what’s happening in the southern part of the PCT, then there is no way they’re going to make it through the Sierras. I’m betting you can do it. Not so sure about the rest of your group.
5:30 Best quote about fear:
" Let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself-nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance." US President Franklin D.
