It is weird that truck campers aren’t super popular here. I remember them everywhere when we lived in Montana.
I am from Florida, planning on getting a truck camper for retirement but I did not know about the campground restrictions of truck campers. Thanks for the heads up. I would prefer the beach camping any way.

Thanks for this great, honest review! We currently have an old Chevy Suburban converted into a camper. We love it because it's 4WD and can go anywhere; we don't hang out in it (too small): we only use it to carry our stuff and sleep. But it's a tight squeeze for 2 adults and 2 dogs to sleep in. We also have a 3/4 ton 4WD pickup, so are looking to upgrade to a pop-up truck camper. You've given us a lot of food for thought.
With a 3/4 ton truck, why not go with a nice hardtop camper? Extra payload would mean extra storage you would lose with pop-up?

Nice vid. Had a older 1986 f350 4x4 diesel and a 1989 viking pop top with shower 20 years ago. Now im retired, thinking of doing it again! I carried a dual sport dr350se back then up front, may again. Good luck, Moab area.
Love our Lance truck camper/cabover, they are very versatile and easier to head into deep or high mountains, they fit into most normal parking spot, easier to clean & maintain etc ❤Truck camper for two 👩🏻❤️👨🏼 Hafa Adai 🌺
You should get some gas struts to help with the lifting of the top. It would also help with the mushrooming of rhe crank gear.
Great video and good explanation of some of the pros and cons of truck campers! Honestly it wouldn't matter what type of RV you guys are rocking, you would make it work and have fun doing it! The important thing is that you're doing what you enjoy and you're doing it together 🤗 Keep the videos coming - maybe all the lost subscribers will reappear? 🤔
We would love to try a class c at some point (the ujoint off road 4x4 conversion) but for now the truck camper is awesome ! We sure hope the prodigal subscribers will return home 🥹🤣

Very cool, we camp 6 months a year in a Northstar TC650..done some mods..and we are in our late 60,s, we pull a 10x 5 ft Big Tex open trailer with two Yamaha naked bikes.
Northstar is a good product
That is an enormous a/c unit for your camper! Happy it ran well and kept you cool so the pesky bugs left you alone.
Wow, you guys are great instructors! I've watched probably a hundred UA-cam's on pop-up campers and stuff like that but I learned more from your one UA-cam then I think I've learned from a lot of the others put together.

So the wood framing has its advantages. I am a huge fan of NS TC and the owner of NS gives great reasons why wood framing trumps aluminum. With wood you do not get the "condensation" that you will get with aluminum framing. Thus the delamination that you see on many TC/RVs. Take a cold aluminum can out of your house on a summer day and see how wet it gets....same thing happens to an AL framed TC. Love your videos!

Spot on video y'all. I think you covered everthing very well and fairly. A good guide for those contemplating a TC purchase. One thing I stongly suggest is to place the concrete blocks with the cells vertical and a piece of 2x10 on top of that to jack up the TC off of the truck. The way shown in the video can very easly break the block as that is not how they are structuraly designed to be used. And that could lead to the whole camper tipping over. And that would be very bad! Prayers and safe travels!
We need to buy some lumber 🪵. Our jacks are already wobbly we don’t need and more problems with the concrete blocks lol!

New subscriber so just started watching but had a 1999 Veri lite Truck camper on a 2009 GMC 6.0 with 8 foot bed. Was definitily a learning curve but had the Stable lift system so a flat tire on truck in back you had to take whole camper off change the tire. We sold it and went to a travel trailer - good idea on diesel - so much more torque - love watching your videos - from Vicksburg, mi - ole Marine so thanks for your service
That would be stressful knowing the camper had to come off to change a tire. We have been looking at small toy haulers but just not in the budget right now.

We had a pop-up camper at one time, but it was the type you pulled behind the truck. It also had issues with leaks!!

I just stumbled onto your channel not long ago. You guys are awesome! I replaced my propane furnace with a diesel heater and it is the best upgrade by far in my truck camper. If you ever come up to BC, Canada my Kitty Bailey and I can show you a few places for camping with lots of big fish! I love remote boondocking the most!
We have BC on our list of places ! The diesel heater is awesome , so much easier to refill and no moisture is a huge plus.
I have a 1990 lance on a 1990 gmc 2500 truck. I lived in it for 5 years. I absolutely love this rig. Bought the camper for $300.00. Yup 300.00.

That's how I got it, already had the truck, and new trucks were completely insane last year.
So most people who were looking, backed out because of truck prices.
Great job on video. I like the pop up with the lower profile. Do you ever wish you had an. F350 for some more payload rating? Oh, you answered this as I watched more.
In later videos we put new leaf springs on that had 2 more leafs in the rear. It was a night and day improvement over the tired 20 year old springs on the truck.
Try modifying your fridge by putting a small fan by 20:36 the fridge motor?
That probably would help . We went a slightly different direction in newer videos though.
When we camped, it was over 20 years ago, in truck campers - all wood!
Up early. Cool video you two . On the popup crank system. If possible you could most likely convert it to a type of ratchet type using one a motor or air ratchet ? . Im rock bottom also lol. I have a 2002 mercedes clk 430 paid 4000 for it 3 years ago because 1 I like nice stuff and 2 can't afford new stuff . Every thing I have is vintage and mostly used Machinist tools audio equipment even some new old stock B and H bass or pendleton clothing blankets ect lol.take care
If we can figure out how to convert it to some kind of ratchet system we will ! Would be much simpler ! Early 2000’s vehicles seem to be a sweet spot of creature comforts with out being overly complicated , also in our county once they are 20 years old no more emissions inspection lol 😂
Great tips guys, We looked at a few truck campers many years ago but decided on a bumper hitch pull behind camper that was just easier for Irene to get into than the Truck Box Camper, and honestly for the times we took it into the Rockies it was pretty damn nice especially when you have another couple with you and it's raining and you need to pull out the Trivial Pursuit or the Cribbage board. That said, if we had been younger the truck camper would have been awesome, and for me it would have made hunting season a bit more comfy.

@@Jani_F No, we never did play Pinochle, I think we all learned Crib from our parents (Around where we lived everyone played Cribbage). A few folks played Gin but it was not popular with our crowd so I never learned it. What did you guys play on rainy camp nights?
We always packed our aggravation board with us (my husband’s dad makes them, so we only need 4 people). If we were camping with another couple, we’d play that. Otherwise, it was Yahtzee or cribbage.
Wow. This really opened my eyes. I watched a few of your videos and I love where you end up camping. Right now I have a big 5th wheel that I couldn't get into most of the places you go. I've looked at vans but they just seem too small. Your truck camper seems a lot larger and more usable than a Sprinter. Ironically I owned a very similar truck to that - 99 F250 CC SB 6 speed, even in that red color !
I love the outdoors. I have dirt bikes, kayaks and mountain bikes. I want to do more adventure camping. I need to give this more thought.
Question: how many times are you using 4WD to get into your campsites ? Do you think you could do the same sort of travel with an "adventure trailer" ? A light, sturdy bumper pull trailer with a flexible hitch system and high ground clearance ?

Thanks for watching! The advantage of the van is the connection between the cab and sleeping space. But if you can’t stand up in it or sleep with your legs straight, it doesn’t seem all that comfortable. We rarely use 4WD, but the high clearance has allowed us to get to more places. 4WD has been primarily for deep sand. We have dragged our boat and motorcycle trailer down some very bumpy/rocky roads that lead to great camping spots…but part of that is because we have no home. So we would prefer in most instances to leave it behind. It all depends on what you’re willing to put your trailer through 😂

Great Video. I'm retiring soon and looking forward to getting a truck camper. I want to hit BLM land, boondock and also not have to worry about pulling a trailer when you are going thru towns, etc. Maybe I'll see you on the road one day!
We have really come to enjoy all of the truck camper benefits! We agree BLM land and boon-docking is way better than campgrounds. Give us the truck camper wave when you get one !

Thanks for this honest review. A while ago I bought a 96 dually ram diesel, did some tuning on the injection pump and recently bought a 2000 canadian build Kodiak K99 fiberglass camper that only weights 3100 lb wet (went over the scales to be sure) for about $10000.. No problem with the weight on this truck and still get 15 to 16 mpg traveling about 60 mph... Up North there are still good deals on similar campers to be found if one is willing to the extra mile to find them.
The #1 Pro w/ this camper: ELIZABETH!!! Yowza...... @18:00+ re: cranking the roof up; What about just NOT using the handle?; as in- replace it with a "socket" (1/2 or 3/4") , mounted to the teeth; then use a battery operated power drill to rotate the roof up. It's HARD to strip out sockets, it's easy to strip out teeth. Get the teeth OUT of the process.
There are a few new models out there that are not that expensive especially if your not full timers.
We are full timers , just no way we can afford a new one at this time sadly

The RV parks that don't want truck campers wouldn't put up with me or Dogzilla either! Yep, good & bad to everything. Gotta have a list of priorities and pick the best options.
I’d take a dogzilla and truck camper over missing out on a few campgrounds for sure!
