    The Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant is a facility that produces enriched uranium for nuclear power plants. The plant is operated by United States Enrichment Corporation, a subsidiary of USEC Incorporated. It is the only operating uranium enrichment facility in the United States. The Paducah plant PRODUCES low-enriched nuclear fuel for NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS.
    A 2000 story about abuses at a nuclear processing plant in Paducah, Kentucky that operated behind a wall of government secrecy for nearly 50 years. Former worker Joe Harding, who died at age 58 after suffering illnesses that included bone-like protrusions growing through his skin, spent his last years fighting for a full accounting of the damage done to workers' lives and local lands.

    I grew up there. Both my parents died of cancer in 1986. The hospice nurses told me this: "There are unusually high incidences of cancer in Paducah, but we don't know why."
    Now we do. Thanks you so much for making this film. The world needs to know.

      So sorry to hear that Mark. Nuclear has taken too many of our loved ones. The safe radioactive level is ZERO.
      Even today people are dying from cancer and still don't know what truly killed them. Nuclear Kills. Bless you Mark.

    Born and raised in Paducah, Kentucky. My grandma Cee Cee passed in the 90's from a tumor on her spine. She was fine. Took a nap, woke up and couldn't move. She never knew the tumor was there. She had raised her family right by that place in Kevil. I know in my heart that plant killed her.

      It's only going to get worse. People think that if they can't see poison it's not there. Look at all the people around West Kentucky. We all are dieing of cancer. Government covered it up like it's not a problem. Hospital are building new cancer centers. It's really bad. Stay safe and move far away from Western Kentucky as soon as possible...

    Not to diminish the story, but to add, there are other incidences of cancer in West Kentucky that seemingly are not related to the uranium enrichment plant, for instance, in towns near the Kentucky-Tennessee border that are far upstream. Also in more recent times let's not forget the hazardous waste incinerator in Calvert City, or its many chemical plants.

    There is the same story at the Portsmouth Nuclear Site (PORTS) in Piketon, Ohio. The Dept. of Energy also enriched uranium there. The real tragedy is that they brought in reprocessed high-level radioactive waste and ran it through all the process buildings to extract the uranium in it. That waste contaminated the entire sites of both Paducah and PORTS with transuranics (plutonium, americium, neptunium), various isotopes of uranium, and technetium, among hundreds of other isotopes and toxins. And plenty went, and continues to go, offsite into the air, land, and water.

  • @AKAtheA
    @AKAtheA 11 років тому +1

    Either way, from the doctors point of view the man was obviously exposed to something nasty and it wasn't in his house (or neighborhood)...
    As for an "agent" showing up and telling him to STFU - an anonymous tip to a few TV stations and newspapers and they would create a nice meat grinder for the company management, it would also force the state agencies to take action...
    Where there's will, there's always a way!

    I actually suspect he DID notify the authorities - and a guy waving a goverment placard in his face showed up and told him to shut up. That is the more likely explanation than the lack of complete knowledge. Btw - chemical contamination (such as PCB) at work would also not affect his wife (significantly)....

    Sad to know about the fate of those who worked in that plant..spent 6 months in Metropolis, Il 2013 and IMO Paducah is (less than 15 miles from Metropolis)one of the growth areas right now. In fact, it was included as one of the fastest growing cities 2013
    Malls are teeming with customers and restaurants are packed most of the time. People are nice as expected from a Southerner. A nice place to live where price of a home have not gone up dramatically apparently due to the presence of a nuclear facility in the area.

    Lot of money in those tanks. Uranium Hexaflouride.
    That is a huge amount of money sitting in those tanks.
    Totally irresponsible to expose these folks to UF6, worse to tell them "It won't hurt you". That stuff gets in your lungs it would be bad news.
    A little consideration for workers is called for here. Give 'em uniforms, launder them, let them shower, give 'em respirators. Train them.
    Good profit. Bad profit. There is a tomorrow so act like it.
    I call "Bullshit" on reprocessing. Spent fuel is intensely radioactive, as in "Stand near it and you'll die within hours" radioactive. The processes are totally different between what they used at Paducah to make nuclear fuel and what is required to reprocess "spent' fuel. Nuclear fuel is hardly spent, it's just not active enough and contains too many fission products to work properly.

    The Paducah Nuclear Facility helps explain the high incidence of cancer in western/northwestern Kentucky area. Living in an agricultural area has its own risks but living near a nuclear facility puts those risks as minimal compared to the health risks of living or working near nuclear radiation. How many more I wonder?

  • @KySilverfish
    @KySilverfish 8 років тому

    +Joshua Castleberry The uranium enriched in Paducah couldn't have been used in the bomb dropped on Japan in WW2 because Paducah's enrichment plant wasn't built until the early 1950's. As to a comment by another person that uranium from the United States was used in the failed Japanese reactor, that I don't doubt, and I suppose some of it could have been supplied from Paducah, I just am not aware.

    • @KySilverfish
      @KySilverfish 8 років тому

      Some of the fissionable material used in the bomb dropped on Japan in WW2 was reportedly from a captured German u-boat headed to Japan near the last days of the war, for their use in developing a bomb, but fortunately captured by the United States en-route. I had never heard or read of this before, but there is a decent documentary on UA-cam which purports this claim.

    "horrible mutations" are not quantifiable to radiation only - by the way his contract might have obliged him to NOT reveal his workplace, as a matter of "national security".
    Without the quantification of possible exposure given by the patient (which you correctly point out would clearly give the situation away to the MD) the situation is not so clear cut - there are other skin diseases which are debilitating, and are induced by chemical not radiological means.

    Well....I think it's interesting that they finally learned to pronounce "Uranium Hexaflouride"What about Chlorine Triflouride, Flourine, Hydrogen Flouride??I worked at K-25 From Oct. 1, 1952 till Sept. 30, 1993. I worked as a process operator and we handled high assay uranium....even the top product(97% pure uranium) and I don't not know a one of our operators who was affected. I talked to two of my co workers within the last six months, one 93 and one 97 and they are living the good life.

    • @stanfinch414
      @stanfinch414 7 років тому

      Since I'm 82 and in perfect health it tells me a lot. A crew of 100 utility personnel cleaned up the biggest spill in the history of the plants at Oak Ridge. A ten ton cylinder with relatively low assay material exploded in unit one(402-1) and a fine powder of the uranium spread through the nine units in K-27. In the top unit, (402-9) it was laying 1/4" deep on all the construction steel beams in the plant. We had so many vacuum cleaners running that we had to station an operator by the electrical switchbox to keep resetting when it would trip. Most of us were youngsters and we didn't even wear protective clothing or masks. I wouldn't be afraid to eat some of it. That spilled material was mostly UO2F2.

    Not sure how the american system works, but in this shitty little state, all companies over a certain number of employees must have their own doctor (either employed or contracted), that is responsible for the employees checkups on so on...
    As for an "outside" doctor, if one sees such extreme heath effects (which his wife was not suffering from), the only logical explanation is exposure at work...
    I still stand by my opinion that the doctor horrendously failed by not notifying the authorities!
