  • An amazing discovery in North America is going to change everything we know. It will change the way we live, eat and travel forever!
In the Chihuahuan desert, the largest desert in North America, covering a total area of almost 600 square kilometers something incredible is finally happening. This desert is pretty young and was only formed about 8,000 years ago. The process of desertification has grown exponentially in the past 150 years as well. One of the most interesting facts about this desert, is that it is considered to be the most bio-diverse Desert is world. When the Spanish first arrived in the region they mentioned that the area was covered in grasses that grew to the belly of their horses. These grasses have made way for a shrub desert landscape. Most of the bushes that grow in the desert today are the creosote bush yucca and mesquite, plants that thrive in the sandy soil and that dominate the lower areas of the desert and only 20% of the grasses remain today. The main reason they have disappeared is from overgrazing, resulting in the conservation status of the desert being described as “vulnerable.”
But now a shocking and surprising discovery is turning this around instead of deserts being desolate and dry, we humans can sculpt the earth that can provide abundance through the natural resources that are already locally available, creating a low carbon circular economy,

Ilive in Michigan and have been saying this for years, it works. All it would take in the United States is for everyone to plant two trees in an accessible area near you. That would equal approx 620 million trees. With that many trees planted it would indeed change the weather patterns by sheer convection in the atmosphere creating more rain chances. Cool the earth and help it survive.

Not every area of the world is suitable for solar panels or gets enough rainfall to make collection viable. Solar panels are ecologically damaging to make and are currently pretty nigh impossible to recycle. That said, those who can should. If you have a garden definitely compost and if possible have a composting toilet, but again not everybody, especially city dwellers, can do this. These measures by private citizens are but drops in the ocean compared to what multinationals could and should be doing to reverse climate change.

It's a false premise that permaculture is impossible to scale up.
Read Mark Shepard's book Restoration Agriculture.
He started with very little, and has expanded to several farms over several states, unlike Bill Gates who is rich and whose farms are employing exploitive farming practices.
Conventional annual ag is fragile and adds little to food diversity to our diets, nor farmer/national resiliency.

You CAN get a permit to build a 3,500sq.ft. luxury home, so long as you pay the permit fees, and instal the required fire sprinklers, solar panels, and other things required by the international building code, and maybe building a power connection to the grid (as required in most CA counties).

I love the way a few determined individuals have worked to prove that deserts can be made habitable, fertile, and productive.
One thing though - if it does rain more as the landscape becomes even greener, will those adobe huts start to wash away?

Not wanting to belittle the great achievements in space technology, I often wonder if the money spent should have first been channeled into greening our deserts. After all, scientists say that they are trying to find life on other worlds, and finding out from where we came, when some of us already know the answers to those questions.

Water-saving solutions are millennia old and found all over the world: no need to invent and produce a riding wheel when it is allready there. Hey, those mud-houses are also ancient. Hey, maybe our ancestors were not that stupid. Maybe we can learn from them instead of doing things 'better'.

Works great for a small village but I don't see Mexico City doing that anytime soon. This is how people lived 2000 years ago without electricity of course. Turning the deserts green would have the same results as cutting down the rain forests. As in bad results.

Nice video. the concepts involved in permaculture and water management are nothing new, and have existed for decades. The problem is getting mainstream agribusiness and farmers to use them: both are addicted to mass farming with destructive mechanized techniques, oil derived fertilizers, and pesticides. Proponents of the principles in this video *must* be able to show *real world profitable and resource-saving results* or they sadly will be ignored as usual.

Your point at 3:52 about deserts increasing due to global warming is incorrect. NASA satellites have confirmed that more of the earths surface has been greening over the last few decades as the planet has warmed. During the last glacial maximum when the earth was much cooler there was a greater desert coverage.

Not to blow my own horn but in Arizona there are areas where we've been doing this for decades. Personally, I've been doing this since 2000. The only reason it works is because greedy corporations have not tried to stick their noses into the situation. But they will, and they'll screw it all up like they screw up everything. It's not going to "change everything." You've got to change the system that keeps ruining what's good for bottom line profits.

Greening up the deserts around the world would cause more imbalance, it's a case of re-balancing and replanting the areas we have destroyed. Not creating green deserts that needs to happen.

Definitely what is changing everything happens outside of the view of most people, cuz most people live in cities. But out in the hinterland, in the backcountry clearcut logging, AKA deforestation-style logging accelerated over CoViD. The general storm weariness & record snows in California -- all weather extremes, temperature included, is from rapid deforestation. They're moon-scaping us, not only desertifying, because any delicate desert flower owes its existence to the nearest forest, even if that forest is hundreds of miles away. Please speak out so we dont get too far from forests, cuz that's too much for the systems that sustain us. Let's replace the resource base and protect what we have thru stewardship style logging. That's selection logging without ANY highgrading, unless it's a flat area of 2nd growth.
