The equally as sad part of this tragedy is the battles these homeowners are going to have with the insurance companies. After Hurricane Ivan devastated Pensacola homeowners experienced unbelievable obstacles to their efforts to get their insurance companies to cover damages. The bone of contention was the term of "flood damage" versus natural water flow. The insurance people insisted that since the surge of water caused a lot of damage it was flooding! Never mind the fact that the extremely high winds forced the water to surge inward. So, maybe you are not in good hands after all. Oh by the way, after it was all over most insurance companies doubled and tripled their rates! Boy, that gives me such a warm and fuzzy feeling. Good luck folks!
No matter where you live in the US your homeowners insurance premiums will go up. Insurance companies will have to spread this loss among all of their policy holders no matter where they live.

I strongly suspect that though still standing, most of those new houses have suffered terrible damage as well.... the 1st floors of EVERY structure there have been blown-out by the wind and the waves! All that debris cannot be accounted for except if it came OUT of the 1st floor of every single structure on that island. 😕
The toll on that bridge was outrageously expensive when they re-vamped it almost 20 years ago. Once it's rebuilt only the very wealthy on Sanibel will be able to afford it!
I live in Key Largo, FL where we get a number of hurricanes.... it is a two story all concrete house / concrete roof. Concrete houses are the only types of houses that should be re-built and 15' above the high tide mark. It isn't fair to people who have "hurricane" houses to pay for all these trailer homes / wood homes at low levels to be rebuilt. Everyone's insurance goes up and it just makes it tough for all.

Doesn’t matter , you always think it would never happen to you. We got hit by a F1 tornado at 115 mph winds and we were shocked at the devastation of just a F1…we could even get out of our house with trees blocking and surround the house….21 trees mowed down. It’s not the fact it happened, it’s the shock of devastation.
@@CarriUSA I agree. The fact is a tornado doesnt make a 15' storm surge over a 40+ miles swath. Tornados are unpredictable. Hurricanes, you have week or more to prepare or to get out. From a individuals point of view that is affected by damage. Damage is damage whether it's a tornado or hurricane. However, a hurricanes damage can be minimized by not building 40 ft from the ocean. 75% of the damage being shown is from the storm surge or rivers over cresting. Not from actual wind. Not at all saying wind doesnt cause damage but the severity is mainly due to flooding and storm surge. Personally I'd rather build my home in Kansas and deal with tornado then on the beach where hurricanes are and can be a yearly occurancw
I remember as a kid growing up in Corpus Christi in the 50's. No one ever built anything substantial on Mustang or Padre island. All knew eventually it would blow away.
Less damage to the high end houses right on the ocean than the older smaller and less hurricane -proof constructions on the inner streets. These areas will end up being nothing but high end houses. Seems inevitable.
Even the high end houses are more damaged than they appear, and in almost every case the cost of repairs will be greater than rebuilding from scratch. Once a structure is inundated with floodwaters, all building materials have to be ripped out and replaced. Salt water also hastens the rusting of metals, including everything from steel beams to screws. All wood, drywall, & other materials will rot and be covered with mold and mildew.
That’s not necessarily true a lot of those high-end houses got flooded and some of the walls got torn out. People listen when salt water gets into your house you pretty much have to gut it.
That is what 150 mph winds can do along with fast moving water. Amazing damage. I think many big boat owners may abandon buying big boats again, they tend to be older people too. The bad economy and fuel prices means the boating industry is not going to be what it was if ever for years to come.
Why would your God give these people this in the first place? Now that he did, you want him to comfort them? Seriously? That's like punching your wife or girlfriend smack in the face as hard as you can after a bout of anger rage, then comforting her with a gauze and apologies, and all is expected to be ok. Conversely, 100% chance of high-tailing it if another hurricane slams the region in 2022… I think that answers the mangroves masterplan.
How about not, barrier islands are nothing but piled up sand from previous hurricanes and more are sure to come. Mangroves will not stop the wind.
The damage from the storm will approach half a trillion dollars. Almost enough to fund the government for 3 minutes.

SOME BS! They already gouge and overprofit enough, they better not.

Yes but humans will never learn.
Same as in tornado alley, forest fire areas, earthquake zones, flood zones along major rivers etc. etc. etc. No place is immune to disasters!
@@randallmarsh1187 True. But I would also add, some places have a much greater susceptibility to weather-related destruction, which is then elevated by human stupidity. As Ms. Breifeller said in her comment, we never seem to learn.

My family stayed for a month, the 4 beach mini-mansions @ 1:03 center of vid, we stayed in the old cottage before it was razed to build the mansions... we watched the Mediterranean duplex being built, I can still see the 2 hot tubs. Across the street was a gas station and the gym. On the other corner was the fire station, you can still see the tower. The siren would go off every day. So many memories since we celebrated my twin boys' birthday here. Also a day at Sanibel. I'm still crying.
Had planned to spend the remainder of my life on Sanibel... too late now, that dream is gone. Praying for all who lost ... all.

Took a trip to Sanibel for vacation one year. It was a cool place. Terrible to see it in such a catastrophic state.
Jesus said everyone who hears his words and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. Then he went on to say everyone who hears his words and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand (Matthew 7:24-26)

These videos highlight the new homes that withstood the hurricane. All the pre-hurricane building code homes get detroyed. Build better and stronger.
a concrete always wins :)
I strongly suspect that though still standing, most of those new houses have suffered terrible damage as well.... the 1st floors of EVERY structure there have been blown-out by the wind and the waves! All that debris cannot be accounted for except if it came OUT of the 1st floor of every single structure on that island. 😕
I would also keep an eye out for new sinkholes forming. If water pushes sand out from underneath limestone, it doesn't matter what's on top.

This just in…we having breaking news…Nature does not giva fuck about your beach house or million dollar yacht.

Seems inevitable.
flush the riff raff
Agreed
Even the high end houses are more damaged than they appear, and in almost every case the cost of repairs will be greater than rebuilding from scratch. Once a structure is inundated with floodwaters, all building materials have to be ripped out and replaced. Salt water also hastens the rusting of metals, including everything from steel beams to screws. All wood, drywall, & other materials will rot and be covered with mold and mildew.
That’s not necessarily true a lot of those high-end houses got flooded and some of the walls got torn out. People listen when salt water gets into your house you pretty much have to gut it.

are you giving permission to "god" or are you asking "god" to give comfort...and so are you saying He has to go thru you first before he does this?
Why would your God give these people this in the first place? Now that he did, you want him to comfort them? Seriously?
