I also work in the field, I do mainly Server and Network Management, but have come quite the IP Surveillance admin over the years as well. I recommend using software called "Milestone XProtect". It is not as intuitive as a setup, there is definitely a learning curve. But, the things you can do with this software is really mind blowing. Best of all, as long as you are using 8 Cameras or Less, they have a free version, it still needs a key but you get that for free on Install, and the software is completely unlocked for everything a home user would need and more, and you only have to start paying a license fee if you intend to use more then 8 camera's with the software. It also extremely scaleable across networks if you ever did license it. So for instance, if you ever got am office to work out of, or a second home or something, you could install the software on another PC there and tie together both systems through a VPN, and have a redundant setup where your recordings can copy across the VPN to the Other's PC, meaning you footage is in both places in case you ever lose one, and allows you to access your cameras from just one place. You get a web GUI interface to log into and view your cameras, and it displays them on your screen so you can easily see all cameras at once. I use it at my home, as well as have huge sprawling networks of Camera's setup at clients corporate offices, and they love what I can do with it.
Anyways, If you are interested in seeing what it can do, if you are curious, shoot me an email and I will gladly let you log into one of my networks to let you see it for yourself, I think you would be quite impressed with the possibilities. Best of all just like the software your using, it can be installed in a Windows Environment. My email is Matt@MattTheTech.net. Keep up the awesome work Paul!

PS. I used to use iSpy as well. It worked well, sort of, but I got sick of it crashing randomly, and the client was forced to pay that $12 monthly fee to be able to access remotely, and unfortunately remote access was shoddy.
With the XProtect setup you do not have to pay a monthly fee, and you can either just open a port on your router, or if you do it like we do in the Enterprise, you simply setup an IPSEC VPN on your network, and VPN in with your remote viewing device, whether that is a phone, tablet, laptop, or computer, and then you can access a Web interface to view the cameras. The awesome thing is it leverages the GPU or iGPU (Ryzen APU offloading is not yet compatible but I am hoping that will be coming in a future update) so it keeps both CPU usuage down on both the recording side, and the viewing side. If your cameras have PTZ, you can easily control the movement of your cameras through the browser interface, and even setup patrols. Really, anything you can think of, you can do. Anyways, would love to show you. Keep up the awesome content!

Hey Paul, still learning myself about camera's but I do know about cabling. The reason there are two types, Plenum and Riser depends on the ceiling environment. Riser cable when it burns will let on gases, not great for human breathing..... Plenum doesn't. The other difference, Plenum is most of the times twice as expensive...:( In most home type environments, cabling will all be in the sheet rock ceiling , so riser can be used. Hope this helps, and keep up the great work!!!!

    Paul,
I actually work in the security industry so this is one subject that I know very well.
Ok, first comment is regarding your switch. The one you showed only has 4 ports that are POE capable out of the 8. That said, you'd have to buy another switch (or poe injector) if you added a 5th POE camera.
Another note about the switch and network planning. Being a 10/100 switch you need to be careful about bandwidth bottlenecks. From the video I couldn't tell what the uplink port was but I'm assuming that it also was 10/100. You need to take into account the maximum bandwidth per camera. If you have 10 cameras that max out at 10mbps then you'll have issues.
My last comment is about ONVIF. You did say it correctly but one thing I wanted to add is that not all camera functionality is available via onvif or the rtsp stream. For example, depending in the video management software (vms) and/or camera, things like recording on motion or dewarping for 360° cameras won't always work.
If you want to chat more I'd be happy to help! 😁

I set this up recently and have been loving it other than a few UI and configuration quirks. The built in web server is dead simple to set up and has a good UI as well so you don't need to worry about crushing your internet trying to dump a dozen video streams onto a cloud service.
I'd prefer a non Chinese camera but it seems like they all come from there anyway. I went with amcrest since they were on sale at Microcenter. They're on a separate VLAN with no WAN access, which in theory should stop any exploits or backdoors.
I also have it running on the same box as my NAS and media server via Proxmox, which I'd highly recommend you checking out Paul! Fun project.

Riser rated cable is required by code for running between floors. The cabe is self extinguishing in the event of fire(attempt to keep from spreading the fire). Plenum rated cable is for running in air handling areas, vents, ducts, above drop ceiling where that space is used for air return. When Plenum cable burns the fumes it gives off is not supposed to be toxic.

@@agoogleuser9025 Sure, but then you don't get the other benefits of IP cameras like better quality, flexibility and versatility in building your system, remote monitoring and management, customizing settings and alerts, etc. Analog cameras still have the advantage for anyone who wants a basic cheap system that "just works", but you can do a lot of neat stuff with IP.

Use Blue Iris software it has motion or continuous recording also and if you have intel CPU it can take advantage of hardware acceleration. It has so many features but the best part my outside cams I have setup motion no alert and created another new camera in the software and made it hidden and setup cross zoning it will track objects and if they cross a line you can make it do alert run a script etc. so basically anyone that walks on to my property I get alert on my phone 0 false alerts. Takes some fine tuning.

I would suggest not keep the local IP addresses as "169.*.*.*" This "169" ip format is an indication of of an unavailable DHCP server and could cause conflict if you ever have an issue with your actual connected network because if your actual network fails with your ISP ect, the IP will default to 169.*.*.* It means, the computer is not connected properly to the network or the computer was not authorized to connect to the network. Just a tip from a networking nerd.

Riser rated cable just means that it has a special fire rated jacket that will theoretically self extinguish and is meant to be run in non plenum(air handling areas) spaces such as in your walls while a plenum cable has a special jacket that is also self extinguishing and also does not emit any toxic smoke when burning since it is meant to go in areas that handle air such as ducts.

Hi Paul... I run a 4,500 camera system and have evaluated most of the products people have talked about here. May I suggest you look at Milestone Essential. I believe it supports up to 8 free cameras and 7 days of retention. They have a free mobile portal/app as well.
Throw two 4tb WD purples in raid 1 and you'll be set. Milestone is a happy to run 24/7 in a windows environment and is compatible with almost Onvif cameras.
The biggest issue you'll have with those monoprice cameras is low light visibility, back scatter off on the dome from IR, or a WDR for face on a bright background

Cat5 riser is meant for running a wire through multiple levels of a building or home. Plenum wire has a different coating that is less toxic during a fire and is typically used when running above a drop ceiling or when you have to run a wire through air ducts. The only difference between cat5 and cat6 is the data flow and the twisting. Cat6 is kinda over kill for security cameras unless you are using it as a trunk wire connecting 10 or more cameras to another switch or NVR recorder.

Riser cable and plenum cable have more to do with what sort of atmosphere they are in. Riser cable is more general use while Plenum is required by code in office spaces where the cold air return is just above the ceiling tiles. Riser is perfectly fine for use in a house, even an attic. Plenum is better but more expensive. Neither is out door rated.

Doing this will allow you to use USB cameras with a PI over PoE.

Monoprice cameras are HikVision with the name rubbed off. Same software and all. No idea who Platinum are, perhaps Monoprice's brand?

The biggest downside to using USB cameras (aside from the lack of night vision) is cable lenght. Although you can use active cable extenders every 20 metres

I think... USB web cam does the compression on its own. The reason is the bandwidth of USB 2.0 is too low to transfer the raw video stream. That's why it's more expensive than just a camera module and a microphone....

So the other reason to not use webcams is they do not have night vision built in on the. POE cameras usually have IR emitters with varying ranges for distance to see in the dark. USB only has a 25ft limit where Poe can go up to 100 meters and with some NVRs over 500ft without and extender.

You actually can set GPU memory to use only 256MB. This does not affect performance in your case. Usually it's not even relevant for games, they will use regular RAM pages instead and in case of APUs it's all the same RAM and the same performance.

One of my good friends owns a surveillance CCTV company. I was just asking him the other night about the drives they use. They DON'T use the WD purple HDD because they are only 5400 rpm vs the WD black HDD which are 7200 rpm which they DO use, the purple HDD doesn't read as fast when you're trying to review footage. Also DON'T get cheap cameras with a plastic housing, they'll BURN UP within a couple years! Get cameras with an Aluminum housing, because the metal housing acts as a heat sink for the electronics inside making them last a LOT longer! You're basically building a "server" too, so don't cheap out on the PSU which has to run 24/7.

USB cable length will be an issue. Just use IP Cams and reduce the system to a more minimal setup. Its total overkill if using IP Cams.

There is a PoE "hat" available for the Raspberry Pi, or you can get standalone devices that extract the PoE power from the ethernet cable and can then power a non-PoE device

I like Blue Iris but it is System hungry. The hardware solutions can run 16 cams at high resolutions with out breaking a sweet. you start hitting 4mp cams BI will bug a system down. I like for a nice linuex software I could run on my system that the only thing running is the Blue Iris or what ever Camera security system used. yet with as many functions as what Blue Iris has that is what I do like about Blue Iris is it has loads and loads of futures are its cheap. .

Hey Paul, I'm upgrading a pc I built this spring and I am looking into including home surveillance into it's job duties. The current use of the pc are basic browsing/video watching, gaming (VR in the future), computer drafting and typical office type works. I'm planning a total of four 4k IP cameras to monitor the perimeter of my home and I want to build the system so worse case scenario all four cameras are recording whilst not significantly impeding performance of other uses. The current system consists of an X570 board and 16Gb of RAM. 5700XT and 650w gold rated PSU. Planning a 8 or 10Tb Purple HD for the surveillance alone. System already runs on 1Tb NVME M.2. This system will be watercooled as well. With Zen3 arriving in a couple months I plan for a 4000 series CPU. So my main concern is... how much CPU do I need for this machine to run without a hiccup in a max recording scenario?

I was using Contacam for a few weeks then it started using 99% of the cpu and taking the 16GB of ram into the high 80 percent use with 3 cams just straight continuous recording an rtsp stream. Reboot worked sometimes for a few hours then started acting up again. I've since switched to Ivideon. I preferred Contacam but not working like that. I may try this Ispy as I have a bit of trouble trying to use Ivideon as just a local server. Software needs some work

The IP addresses your Camera's are using aren't correct. The IP Range 169.254.0.1-169.254.255.254 is used for whats called Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA). You should only get APIPA addresses if you its because your network isn't setup correctly. You don't have a real DHCP server based on the video. You either need to setup static IPs and subnets or setup an actual DHCP server on your camera network or set static IPs. If you don't you're going to have lots of intermittent issues with connectivity to the cameras when the recycle the address and check for a dhcp server again or you'll have a camera pick an randomly pick an IP thats not in the same subnet as the other cameras/server and completely lose access.

I tried iSpy but for some reason, the fps for each of my cameras was always really low (like 10fps). I have been using Blue Iris with a mix of inexpensive PTZ and fixed IP cameras for about three years without an issue. The Blue Iris apps for iphone and ipad are decent too.

    • @Qyngali

Why would you need more than 10 fps for a security cam? You'll just end up using more storage space.

people perfer hard spinning drive over SSD not only because its cheaper, but also many ppl run the camera recorder 24/7, and before hard drive fails you can kinda tell by the slow copying speed/unusual noise, and even after it fails, most of the time you will still have some data left. SSD on the other hand, once its dead, its dead, you cant recover anything
