- According to legendary Moscow Conservatory professor Vera Gornostaeva, there is no single way of playing that can achieve a beautiful sound, nor is the category of "beautiful sound" helpful. Rather, there are specific sounds pianists must create in order to realize their expressive intention.

I love this pencil thing. So correct. It's basically what my Beethoven and Tchaikovsky lineage piano teacher from Gnessin school (Kissin's old school) used to say - she wasn't too bothered at all about hand or arm position (like so many 'so-called teachers' are). The main thing she taught me was to be as cultured as possible. To be amazed by the beauty of various compositions (especially Schubert Chopin and Bach and Handel, as far as I recall). She didn't seem to be the biggest Beethoven fan..

I'm an amateur, so please forgive my ignorance, but I don't understand how varying the depression of the sustaining pedal helps in the pianissimo passage. I assume that it helps to sustain a legato sound, without accumulating harmonic reverberations? Why wasn't anything mentioned about the una corda pedal? Also, I didn't really hear a true piano or pianissimo. It sounded like mezzo-forte, to me.
I think the depression changes the sensitivity of the Keys before the resistance point?
This system to me is the most natural one, but the Chinese school and the Chinese internet on hand position is crazy, where your professionalism as a musician/pianist is just based on that shape of the hand lol

and the mazurka is the op 41 number 1 or number 4, c sharp minor tho... different editions give different numbers to it.

Didn't teach anything. Mazurka op.41 #1 starts without any dynamic sign. It can be mezzo Forte than with gradually crescendo bring to forte in measure 17. Vadim. learn the score and don't hide behind Vera.
There little piano measures in this Mazurka-more Forte and Fortissimo. Wrong peace to teach how to play quality piano. You play so mannered.
I agree Esfir and he actually played the Tchaikovsky almost the same way twice.... certainly not in a strict 3/4 the second time.... Happy New Year to you.
