I have been doing the same for some time with my Fuji files. Import and rating in Lightroom and developing in Capture One working on the same folders sharing metadata. I have pictures in Lightroom since I startet with digital photos in 2000 and that is my main data base. Your tips on reimporting Capture One developed photos as Tiff is an excellent way of keeping all the photos in one database. Thank You very much for this idea. It simplifies my system a lot. I have been using Lightroom since version 1 and updated through all the later versions. But when I changed to Fuji from Nikon I found Capture One to be the better choice for developing Raw files.

This is a great video that has persuaded me to give Cap1 a real try. I do not want to leave Lightroom behind due to it’s far superior cataloguing capabilities. I am trying Cap 1 for such things as Still - life studio photography (it after all was designed to support PhaseOne MF cameras that are generally used for studio and high end portraiture) . I also like layers in a raw converter although in LR one can use an adjustment brush - show the overlay and paint which is about the same thing. Also it will be useful for high ISO Fuji pics . I have just bought a years subscription to Cap 1 so I have plenty of time to assess (30 days is insufficient) but anticipate that Cap 1 will be great for still-life - not a lot different for FUlJI because of enhance details - and on other types of pics about the same as ACR. Without this video I would not have bothered with Cap 1 at all as the workflow would have been too tiresome.

Thanks for this! I've been experimenting with Capture One every since switching to Fuji recently and I love it's raw engine and the ability to make adjustments with layers. Your tutorial helps me to make the transition smoother. Well done!

Looking into it too... isn’t there a XMP sidecar problem here? I mean, you have written to it when you’re in LR. Then when you edit in CO, it will write his changes to the same XMP, because there can only be one i(pun intended) so it’ll be overwritten with something LR does not understand...next time you open LR and sync the metadata...boom! I tried and it prompted me to delete the raw and reimport it, and of course any changes I made in LR prior to export were gone...a bit confusing but worth looking into...

    Thanks Thomas.
Ingenious - but I would recommend just ripping the band-aid off. :-)

Quick question, why not just use a session and browse the RAW location from filebrowser? When done editing then just export a JPEG to RAW files location by using a token. No hassle with importing files in to another catalog. If you enable FULL SYNC in C1 preferences then EXIF will sync back to LR as-well. Bonus with session: You save the edit in to the file structure of the RAW file and not in to a catalog file you might delete by accident later on.

As I said in the video there are lots of ways of doing this and this is my preferred method. Most people who are new to Capture one may not even be aware of the sessions feature and so I would have had to explain all about sessions on top of this. I chose this method as I believe it’s easy to follow for anyone who is new to Capture One, but of course other methods are just as useable.

I do all my C1 edits using a session pointing to a finder folder. How to get the result back to LR is something I need to play around with jpeg vs TIFF - perhaps that depends if you want the TIFF anyway.

Thank you very much Thomas, exactly the solution I was looking for, excellent video!!

Thanks for the video. Because of tethering probs with LR, I created a session in C1 and shot away. I then imported the capture folder into LR and did my culling there. I'm not seeing my star rating in C1. Looks like it's not reading the xmp from LR. Is there a way to get it to sync the xmp?

can you also do the same the opposite way around - rating in capture one and editing in lightroom ?

Thomas, thanks for the video. Question, say you’re going to do a new import of images you just shot. Would it benefit to just import firstly into C1, process them accordingly then export them to LR for cataloging/PS purposes?

This was in answer to a specific question from a reader.

Personally I would import into LR first and do the usual rating keywords etc and so keep the workflow identical - and after all the images (to put it simply) are destined for LR so will need to go there at some point.

I use Bridge for my asset management and CaptureOne for editing. The problem I have is when I want to re-visit an image that was already imported in C1. The same issue can be observed when starting from Windows Explorer (and I assume Lightroom). When C1 is launched from Bridge or Explorer using a RAW file that was already imported, C1 correctly identifies that it was already imported - but it refuses to take the next logical step and offer a way to navigate to that image for further editing. Instead I have to search for it in C1 by filename or some other criteria. Is there any workaround for this? I'm using C1 12.1.3. I would upgrade if this case was handled in version 13 but I don't believe it has.

Thanks for a useful video Thomas. As someone who uses Fuji X cameras, in order to avoid the “worming effect” particularly at high ISOs, should I still import to Lightroom, adjust and then transfer to Capture 1 as you suggest, or should I import directly to Capture 1?

    • @thomasfitzgerald
      @thomasfitzgerald  4 роки тому

It really depends on which workflow you prefer. Ideally, go straight to capture One as it saves you some work

thomas fitzgerald Thank you. I’m used to using Lightroom and only just installed Capture 1 so I’ll probably try the workflow you suggested in the video, first then do a comparison.

Thomas. You dragged a folder from Finder over the Capture One icon in the dock to import the contents of the folder into capture one. That does not work for me. I must instead select all the images in the folder (cmd-A) and drag the selected images over the icon. Am I missing a configuration option? I'd really like that to work.
I used roughly the same workflow you show for a while before deciding to go all in on Capture One. I survived going from Aperture to Lightroom. I'll survive this change, too.

    • @thomasfitzgerald

That’s weird. Dragging the folder has always just worked for me.

@@thomasfitzgerald I had trouble with this at first too. Found C1 is touchy where you actually try to drop the folder.

Of course the advantage to using actual layers rather than the adjustment LR adjustment brushes is that the layers can be named and each adjustment put on a separate layer maybe with identical masks. This gives far greater flexibility than the “all or nothing” adjustment brushes and re-creation of what is essentially the mask. This is why I said “almost” the same thing.

This not a workflow, it's just exporting and importing. Lightroom and Capture One have mostly the same color tools, but Capture One just does everything with less clicks
