Alright folks, everyone that has some of these Terrain Crate sets let's hear YOUR review? Love em? Hate em? Good buy? Bad buy? Let the people know!
I bought the big box that first released and felt I got good value for money. The sculpts and plastic are far from perfect but you get so much stuff it’s hard to complain. If your making a competition level diorama you may want to look elsewhere but for the table top they are very passable.
Bento San yup I think the sculpts and castings are solidly in the “pretty good” department. As good or better than most soft plastic miniatures, but not nearly as nice as higher end plastic or metal minis. But the price and variety reflects that.
I bought a small set after your first review. This is the gender of stuff that I use A LOT on my pieces, more on diorama level... adding details really boost your piece!
I've got the Dark Lord's Tower and Wizard's Study sets. I haven't painted any of them but they always add just that perfect little touch especially when combined with other terrain types and resin pieces that i've made or purchased over the years. Phones come out and pictures are taken when i pull out this stuff.
I got the dungeon pack as a surprise for Christmas, and I absolutely was not disappointed. I've found that the GW black spray primer works perfectly on the pieces and that the sculpts once painted and perhaps with the mold lines removed, are really nice - I've painted up some barrels and crates as scatter and the sculpts have plenty good detail.
Even a sponsored video and you give honest opinion I respect that.
I tell every potential sponsor “you are paying for my time, you are not buying a positive review”
That’s a great model to operate by and a lot more people should follow that. People respond better to honesty.
Would love to see you take some the smaller pieces and make something larger with them. I think it would be a awesome build video to go from box , to paint , to finished usable prop. As always awesome video man keep up the craft.
Kickstarted this 1 year ago. I got the town set. Basically everything Jeremy said is true. Lots of details but some are really small and fiddly to use as is if not glued to a bigger piece. Plastic was bent in many pieces and even with hot/cold water bath there are some that just keeps bending back like the brasiers. Paint really stick to it without any primer. Great product for stuff that is impossible or just pain in the but to craft yourself.
I backed these guys on Kickstarter and received several crates and I think they are great. They are nicely detailed and hold paint very very well. I think anyone who purchases a create will be very happy.
I got the kickstarter sets and they are excellent. As you noted, there are a few that are a little thin but overall they are perfect for me. Nice detail and I can toss them around without worrying about breaking them. A good product.
My wife and I bought almost all of them on the Kickstarter, and it has been seeing a lot of use. In particular - I have found that combining the furniture with printed maps looks very, very good. My wife absconded with most of the furniture, and had it painted in a couple of weeks. Our verdict is that th sets are totally worth it. The Town Center is nice - and agreed that the market stalls NEED to be based - but once based they are very nice. And, yeah, we have already pledged for Terrain Crate 2. :P
These things are awesome. Big bits, little bits, highly detailed, and really good quality for the money. I challenge anyone to find a product as detailed for the same cost per piece. I have four different sets which I picked up at a local game shop. Painting was as easy as the one and only B.M.C. pointed out; that being said, I first had tried Vallejo Primer, and it turns out the base material didn't need Primer which allowed the base color to show through, creating a really nice effect. Anyways, I love these things! Spot on Jeremy!
I am a huge fan of the terrain crate stuff. The "core set" is super awesome. My player's love this kind of thing. Easy and fun to paint.
yeah i got terrain in the mantic vanguard kickstarter. i primed them brown (with no problem), put a wash on top and the the things that represent wood are already by that little work looking beautiful . i love them
I got a bunch of this stuff in their Kickstarter and I think it's great. I haven't run a game without using at least a few items since I got them. I can see how basing the stuff could be practical, but I like to use the small stuff as props which can be moved and reoriented so basing wouldn't work in my style. For instance, I like to have the option of overturning a wheelbarrow or kicking over a grinding wheel... so it's cool to have the bits unhindered by a permanent base. That said, I did buy a bunch of extra stuff to use as diorama fodder, so, it works either way.
I've purchase a few of Mantic's sets and I am always impressed with the small pieces that I would have even considered for my games. It adds a nice little bit of realism having these smaller scatter pieces. I have not experience any of the warping issues you have mentioned. I recently got the Game Master's Dungeon Set a few weeks back and holy Toledo Batman! does that set give you everything you need and more to run a game within the dungeon setting. They are a bit on the pricier side of things but you get your monies worth for sure.
Ive bought a few terrain crate sets and they're fantastic. Some plastic stuff came bent and I haven't found a good way fix them. There's also some very small things that I haven't found much use for. That being said, I love them. Didn't even bother painting them because they're beautiful
I got most of the Kickstarter stuff apart from the Battlefield set. Walls and fences I can make easily, though i regret not getting the campsite stuff. Despite some issues with bent items I have found the bits very useful; they paint up well and easily and are mostly the sort of terrain I find fiddly to craft. Value is good, especially if the group clubs together to buy it, and we get use out of most of the items on a regular basis.
Crazy Canadian! Your front door is ajar! I hope you have it shut now.
Worst thing that could happen is a fellow Canadian wanders in and apologizes for something.
@@BlackMagicCraftOfficial ha! I'm from the American Midwest. There are remarkable similarities! tbh I was more worried about your heat bill!
That's why a lot of french wants to live in canada and not united states it's for its people not the weather^^.
How can a door be a jar? That`s just silly. lol
I bought the GM starter set, and i really enjoy having it. It is everything i need of scatter terrain right now. The minis in it, is also some great minis. You just have a bit for everything.
One other thing - after painting I did seal them to protect the paint job. I was afraid that it might give the piece too much of a gloss but that was not the case so I did all of them. I painted the tents and sleeping bags and used them in a game. The guys thought they were cool and asked me "Did you make these, Brig?" I was tempted by the dark side but fessed up as to where I got them LOL.
i bought the big dungeon essentials box and its awesome i can create rooms in seconds it has plenty of doors and book cases anything you need and i love the plastic theyre made of
I picked up the Dungeon Depths set on recommendation of BMC and the other guild masters a while ago. I still haven't gotten to painting them (getting a nice set of Vallejo paints for December though - yay!) They're very nice, quality of sculpt and material very similar to Bones minis We have used them as is on the table though the smaller pieces, even like the chests, need some sort of base to be more user friendly.. even just clear plastic with matte varnish so they stay where you want them a bit easier.
Have them and love them. Only wish they came already painted. Wish the price point was lower but will likely see a lot of gameplay at my table.
I’ve always found that prepainted stuff is SO awful, and it makes them more expensive. At least stuff like the prepainted wizkids minis, I can’t bring myself to pay extra for horrible paint jobs. BUT if they were prepainted and the price stayed the same....
I think they are definitely worth the money I paid for the kickstarter set. The town set and the wizard's room set would be VERY useful for specific dungeons and could be used over and over again for different things.
I own both the Wizard Study and the Dungeon Delve scatter terrain sets, and I am quite pleased with how usable they are in game. Only very few pieces were delivered in a bent state, and those are also the pieces I am most inclined to not even bother using that much. Overall, I think I got my money's worth for a fair price.
Hey @Black Magic Craft: What do you think about maybe reviewing this product next? www.gamemat.eu/our-products/terrain/medieval-town/medieval-houses-set/sk/
Hmmmm. That could be a tough one. It's not something I'd be willing to pay for since its EXACTLY the kind of thing I can easily make for next to no cost. That's the appeal about the small items of terrain, those are hard to make. These houses I can (and have) made on the channel from foam easily....and I doubt they'd want to send me review copies since I'd end up just saying these are the type of thing you shouldn't buy!
Oh, at first glance I thought that price was for ONE house, but it's a set which is much more reasonable.....still not the type of thing I'd buy though.
@@BlackMagicCraftOfficial I'm currently considering buying the set, simply because I have plenty of money, but precious little time for crafting and painting. And those come fully painted and assembled, ready-to-play out of the box. Which is a huge appeal to me as a DM with very little time to spare. I also have a huge collection of unpainted miniatures and no time to paint them. If I knew a person that'd do that in reasonable quality for a reasonable fee, I'd outsource that as well ^^
@@blablubb4553 I didn't noticed the came painted as well. The price is actually really great in that case. I totally understand. Time is often so much more valuable than money. I know I often find time to be a much more limited resource than cash which is why I'm often willing to pay for things that speed up my hobby.
Hello nice video. I back the kickstarter. I think they worth the price it's important to paint directly on it (after wash it with soap) and no varnish spray (you will have to use a pencil and a bottle varnish) . The pieces are very details and it will be cool fir RPG and and skimirsh game. I like the plate and the very small pieces to give live to scenery but yes it 's not mandatory. If you don't have time to do it yourself and want something detail this will be great. And i think the price are OK some set are may be a little bit to expensive but it depend if you will use the small piece. It's my little opinion. Sorry if you find some weird turn sentences i am french so my english is far from perfect. Happy hollidays
You said you had a bad reaction to primer, what do you do when that happens, i have a few terrain pieces i tried to put a base coat on and now they are super shiny and i can't get paint to stick on them :/ I own several of their products and love them btw :)
I've preordered their GM's Starter Set. Great value and looks like it's got all you need for a good supply of dungeon decor
Oooh! The library set for Call of Cthulhu RPG. Drool!
Great impartial review thanks for sharing. I like that they come unpainted so you can add to your other themes items
Yeh these sets are super. Great bookcases for frostgrave. I love the little details add so much to your games.
They must be really good , l drove 50 miles to a hobby shop to buy them , while we were at another store shopping someone broke into my car and grabbed both of them ,they weren't the ones you showed .
That was short and sweet. I wish they would do a monthly box set. I would jump on that but it would have to be $40 or less total after shipping. Maybe we would get less items. Oh wait there over seas, damn it. They would still would be expensive. Is there someone in the state that makes something like that?
Hope you see the edited text
Yup. It would be cool if there was something like that. Not sure there is any company stateside doing this sort of stuff.
Well there should be, darn it. Damn I wish I had a 3D Printer and time.
This was a really helpful video.
I'd love to see you check out the DMs started crate they have
Ever since you first talked about these in your last video i've been meaning to get one of these crates... Maybe I'll make it my Xmas gift to my self ☺️
I do not have any of the Mantic Terrain stuff. Ironically I was looking hard at them (and other stuff) on the website just yesterday! I do love the look of the Mantic lines, and plan on getting lots of it in the future. You can tell them to send me some of their Kings of War sets, and Terran Creates to review for myself, they can PM me for my shipping addy. ;)
Thx for the Vid/Review!
This does look pretty useful. I was thinking of scratchbuilding a lot of this stuff but I might just pick this up.
Great review love the town set.And is that a Machinehead shirt I spyed?
Love the video. I might head out to the local games store and see if they have any of these. I'm a diorama type of guy and I wonder if they would work with the scale I model.
These are 28mm scale, works well with heroic scale. Hope that helps.
@@BlackMagicCraftOfficial It does a little bit, I do 1/64th scale antique tractor dioramas. The terrain crate lines might be some good filler for them. When I do go to the game store, I'll take a couple tractors and minis with me to see how they size up.
@@DigsOutdoors You'll probably like the included hay bales :)
I could spend a lot of money on all the different types. I could find a lot of uses for most of the terrain outside of what the set name might suggest.
Dude your frontdoor isn't fully closed!
I think that might have been his back door.
Unrelated to the video but figured this was easier than trying to find an email address for you. I need some poster tack to adhere minis to pill bottles for painting. Got any recommendations and an amazon affiliate link? I didn't see any on your store.
This will do! amzn.to/2rGg91S
Close the dang door all the way!
Your shirt looks awesome! Also, ty for the helpful vid.
it would have been nice if you showed it all off a bit more maybe take the smaller stuff and craft up some of those bases you were talking about.
I'm glad I watched this, I assumed it was a subscription (which I'm opposed to) based on the name. Seems cool, but for most of these things I think I would rather the challenge of making it.
*Really nice review! Good job!*
Will you make a video making the bases for some of the small pieces?
I was actually just thinking about that. It’s something I might do in the future but not quite sure how I want to approach it yet. There’s so much in the sets it’s a bit overwhelming to be honest.
From your video and the products on their website I would be too. Well I cant wait to see how it'll turn out once you figure it out.
Love your t-shirt! Where'd you get it, if I may ask?

@@BlackMagicCraftOfficial thanks!
Nice review! These look very usable and a good deal to me.
They look great! Thanks for the honest review.
Love the sworn in shirt
Nope. Incorrect. Try again 😂
Nice review!
Send me some for Christmas Santa!
I love your reviews, they help me know if things are worth trying or not
So, whatcha think? These worth trying?
Personally it's a no as I have use of a 3D printer so I can get a lot of similar items fairly easily, but a year ago I definitely would use something like this
Yea, I think that if you have a 3D printer (or good access to one) these really don’t offer nearly as much value as they do for people without a 3D printer. Much of the appeal are the too hard to craft bits. That’s irrelevant with a 3D printer.
smooth intro 😎
Holy Crap Black Magic Craft is that a Plague and Pestilence shirt?
No
Alright! It's marx battlefield in a box!!! Where's the exploding bunkers and fort Apache
its look in to see as you post good holday
just my opinion just saw this video love BMC I checked out the web site imo all of it looks amazing but I say most of it is far too overpriced good pricing on the forge and a few other kits the rest I say not off about ten to twenty buck
NICE
Nice
70 bucks, jeebus.
lol you have vivint
Mmmmm...plastic terrain. Don't own any of it...just doesn't seem practical for all those gritty gamer fingers. Like you mentioned, may have to glue down on bases to be practical on the table. Oh, BTW, like your shirt, where can I get one? Thanks.
Redbubble.com
@@BlackMagicCraftOfficial Thanks...I think I ordered from them before.
they are so expensive wtf
Direct from Mantic is (converted) $75 USD for the large sets, so just over $1 per piece in the 69 piece set. I personally think that’s fair.
At the time I posted this the sets were $57 USD on amazon so $0.80ish a piece. I think that a great price.
Of course “expensive” is relative, but compared to average prices for plastic minis, this pricing is below most. A single reaper bones mini is often $3ish.
Stores and retailers can price at whatever they want, so you may encounter far higher pricing which obviously changes things.
@@BlackMagicCraftOfficial well yeah when you say it like that its a fair price so i dont have anything to say,for me its expensive maybe thats why i had this reaction. Also can you make some more simple tutorials for people like me that have only x acto knife and dow foam nothing else.Cause except the dungeon tiles i cant do anything else unfortunately
I mean if you put enough cheaply priced items into a set the total cost can easily become too expensive for some. I get that, but logically the pricing is fair. They also have smaller sets available that are like $12 for people not wanting to invest in a ton of items.
As for projects, I have many videos that just use foam and knife. I also have some that I use other tools but you CAN do with simpler tools. Just look through my vids. Stone golem comes to mind. Bookshelves were foamcore and blade. I have a bunch.
Please do not follow that path of shameless advertising, for to the dark side it leads!
Greed will lead to hate, hate will lead to violence and violence will lead to suffering!
Seriously:
I think that the price of US-$ 95.99 for some plastic pieces ist simply ridiculous!
You could get better stuff from WizKids, Reaper, Grendel, Tinyfurniture and many others at a third of the price!
3d-printing is another option.
Last, but not least, making the stuff yourself is cheaper by far and will get you better results
The price for these large direct from Mantic is $75USD, what third party retailers increase that price to is it's own issue. I think the pricing is fair at the direct pricing. It's about $1 per item. You can not get better stuff for that pricing from Wizkids or Reaper (I don't know much about the others listed).
3D printing is a great option, if you have a printer. These really aren't for people that have a printer (which is most people).
Making stuff yourself can sometimes be cheaper (but not always), and is for sure more satisfying, but for these types of items you'd be hard pressed to get better results at scale. I know I can't, and I think I'm a pretty decent sculptor. If you can, then AWESOME! Do it!
And in the end, I've presented you with a product so you can make your own decision on it. If you feel they are not a good value and don't want to buy them, then that's great, this video has helped you come to that conclusion, that's the whole point.
PS. I find no shame in promoting products or companies that I like, I use, and are on theme to my contetnt. Especially when it helps keep a roof over my family. If you start seeing me advertise mattresses then give me hell.
