I dont musky fish but i do alot of saltwater fishing on the west coast and one of my favorite reels is the penn squal 400 low profile and id bet it would make a great budget musky reel
I went for the Tackle Industries 9’ telescopic XH slips down to 8’ …line rating … 60/130 lb. Comes w/ pistol grip Paired w/ Daiwa Lexa HD 400… well I definitely went past the $500 mark… oh well… it’s still a sweet setup 👍😎🤙
Couldn't agree more, started with a tranx 400hg and MOJO 8" just upgraded to the shock and awe 9"6 and tranx 500pg, you definitely feel the difference.
For me personally 8 ft is perfect. I probably wouldn't go any longer than 8'6". It can get tough from shore with longer rods, especially if you're covering ground to get to spots, going through brush, etc. You also sometimes find yourself casting in tight/crowded areas lol so again, that can be tough with longer rods. In a boat, I love my 9+ ft rods, but on shore I usually prefer shorter (7'6" up to 8'6") 🤷♂️👍
What’s funny is I came up with this combo on my own a few weeks ago because of my the price point, and the good reviews on both products. Glad I’m not alone in my decision making 😂
Excellent video sir! I have the Komodo as well, but the lefty paddle version. Absolutely love it! Would I rather have a Lexa or Tranx? The quality is pretty comparable actually. I just think this reel is not exactly apples-to-apples. The non-disengaging pawl and the added clicker can make this reel more desirable depending on the type of fishing you want to do. So I put this reel on a Chaos Tackle 20/20 telescopic 8'6" Assault Stick. I got a great deal on both, and got the combo for $500.00 and change. Also, your daughter is the absolute cutest, and I can tell you are a great dad! I miss those days with my kids so much. Even though my girls are getting old enough to move out, the silver lining is that I will have more time for fishing soon! Woot!
So true about kids growing up! But I'm trying to soak up every second while I can! Being their dad is the pinnacle of my life! So thankful to have my wife and kids! And thank you for such a kind comment! But yes, the Komodos are solid! Very hard to beat for the price. The only other reel I'd recommend giving a look is the 400 from Piscifun. They are legit and at a great price! Thanks again and God bless! 🙏👍
im looking at musky rods to use in a saltwater environment. It seems like they check all the requirements im looking for BUT some are really heavy in weight. Any idea who makes really light musky rods?
Usually the lighter you go the more you can expect to pay, so just a heads up. If u go to Okumas website they actually have some decent saltwater options. If you're looking specifically for light musky rods, I'd say check out St Croix Rods or Chaos Tackle. They've got some very light rods that can definitely handle bigger fish. Good luck and thanks for watching! 🤙
one of the best reels for the money is a tatula 300/400 from like 230 shipped up to 275-300 for the 400. Great tranx quality reels for a little less. also tranx 400 are around 300 now. Not too bad. But the tatula have hyperdrive which is diawas version micro module gearing, they also have a stainless steel pinion gear instead of brass like 90% of others . They also have the dual pinion bearing support which lexas never had, Amazing reels for a good price.
@@justkeepcasting I do own a Evx though, it was my entry level so to speak, I still use it for jigging.. it has a lews super duty 300 on it with a Winn power handle
To clarify, I live on st Clair, so sometimes jigging in the channels of the river for musky is a pattern.. I know it’s pretty foreign territory for most musky guys.. planet Clair right?? Lol you’ve been here 😂
@@justkeepcasting Yeah I agree, especially if the weather dictates.. like if there’s a flat calm day in the dog days of summer, go find current and jig, or even just high water temps period, the river is much cooler coming from Lake Huron
@@jeffyount3559 yeah, I also only have 2 setups. Been that way for years. It gets the job done, I can fish all the baits I want to, and I catch fish 🤷♂️ I did these musky fishing on a budget vids cuz I felt like a lot of guys were getting pushed away from the sport due to this "have to spend thousands of dollars on gear or you're not hardcore" mentality lol. I respectfully disagree. It's tough tho, cuz the market and overpricing keeps jacking up the prices at a rapid rate. Don't know how much longer I'll even be in the game 🤦♂️
IMO musky gear is the last place you want to cheap out on,more or less the reel and some terminal tackle. You need quality bc you will end up hooking into a monster fish with semi shoddy equipment and you'll be kicking yourself in the ass. Cry once as they say

I got the same rod telescopic with a Diawa Lexa HD for about $400. My 1st setup was a sojourn 8’6 with a abu Garcia can reel for $275.
Nice!!

Exact same current setup and my first combo was same only Daiwa tatula 300 instead of abu Garcia can

Yup that's what happens 🤷♂️ lol
I have the same rod in the 8.6 with the picifun alijoz musky reel dont judge me i know its a 100$ reel but it works well for me
Hey, I used a $50 reel for a couple years and caught a lot of muskies on it - no judgment here! Lol 🤙
Have the same reel and it works wonders
What length rod would you recommend for bank musky fishing?

Yes they are! Great deal 👍👍
I fish a 400 squall on an Evx carbon for snook
@@Florida.40cal I like Penn too. They're kinda like a abu but I dislike abu a lot and idk how people like their big baitcasters
Great vid
Thanks for watching 🙏👍
i like Ebay....got a new "T.I. XH for $90 and the abu toro s 61 for $90
Good review and tips! More screen time from your assistants would have improved the video even more but I’m just nitpicking now.
🤣👌
Assault stick for 200 and a tranx for 250
That's a GREAT combo 👏 use to have one myself lol

Go to the Musky Shop it is wayyyy cheaper!
These guys act like everyone has 500 bucks laying around to buy A fishing rod and reel. Then they say you need twenty different setups. Crazy.
I definitely don't have that kinda money laying around lol 👍
Exactly my point

A SWEET old style Garcia mitchell 300 works just fine for any fresh water fish. And you can pick them up for around 50 bucks or so.
