Speaking of Brian's watch, have you guys ever noticed when you looked at your watch that you forgot to set it, you'd been wearing it all day long and didn't even notice?

How about these from a professional pilot for over 45 years (Military, Corporate and Airline), trained Industrial Designer and certified watch geek. I own these watches ...
    - GMT Master 16750, worn since new in '83.
    - Glycine Airman Base 22 version. My daily go to when my GMT was recently apprai$ed! In some ways this is a better GMT than even a GMT Master II (Airman displays three concurrent time zones with a real quick set date), with as much history (1953 versus 1955).
    - Sinn 104 St Sa A.
    - Omega Speedmaster Professional, for when I needed a chronograph, (military low levels). Honorable mention and ones that I love too Breitling 806 (re-issue), Breguet Type XX Aeronavale 3800, Dodane Type 21 and Omega X33.
    - Rolex Sky Dweller. My retirement watch as a B-777 pilot. The watch that is the natural successor to the GMT Master II. Prefect watch for not only the world traveler, but the international airline pilot who flies 350 passengers in a aircraft worth $320m+!
Nothing high horology, I was a working line pilot after all.

Thank you Brian and Tim. Great show. I appreciate you gentlemen giving us flight nerds some flight instruments to dream about. The IWC father watch was the show stopper for me. Keep up the good work and come back to pilot watches every now and then.

I guess that the reason that pilot's watches are so diverse is because manned flight was the original rational for the wristwatch.

The first wrist watch was made in 1505. In the 19th century, they started to be commonly made for women as a kind of visible bracelet/jewelry as men's watches always stayed in the pocket.

My list of the 10 most iconic pilot's watch types of the 20th century. All of these are still available today. Tim, if you read my blog article I sent, you've seen these...
    - Cartier Santos.
    - Zenith 1909 worn by Louis Bleriot.
    - Longines - Lindbergh Hour Angle (Lindbergh-Weems Second-Splitting) watches.
    - German A and B dial Fleiger watches of WW II ( Laco, Stowa, ALS, Wempe and IWC).
    - Breitling Navitimer.
    - Glycine Airman. The underrated 1953 classic.
    - Rolex GMT Master.
    - French Naval Aviation Type XXs (Breguet, Dodane, Auricoste, Vixa, Arian and Mathey Tissot).
    - Omega Speedmaster (although designed for auto racing, it's heritage in military aviation and space elevate it to pilots icon status).
    - Omega X33. Designed in cooperation with NASA the Thunderbirds and the Blue Angels.

      No Omega Spitfire 30T2 ?

    • @cnaarndt
      @cnaarndt 4 роки тому

@@RaftGuidePhil Nope, there were too many from WW II to choose from, USA, British, German and Japanese and I choose the German Fliegers as the most iconic. The Omega watch is a bit too obscure, plus there is no real modern equivalent.

Great show boys. I love pilot watches with their plain, austere, workman like dials and you found some good ones. I found the gold IWC 3711 tempostop veery cool, even better then the ceramic model and that's the best looking GMT Master I recall seeing, just the right amount of gold to pop without being gauche. But once again GO revels real value for the money. I guess they would be my picks.

I have a Rolex GMT2 16718 with Jubilee bracelet. It used to be my travel watch. I really like the GMT function of this watch. However, I stop wearing this watch for travel as it is too eye catching and I do not want to be a target when travelling. I am surprised that this video did not mention World Timers. For world travelers or pilots, a World Timer is more user friendly and could track times across the world at a glance.
After doing some research, I picked up a Breitling Galactic Unitime World Time. It has the same Calibre 35 movement as the Aviator 8 B35 Unitime. What made me choose over the Aviator 8 B35 is the tungsten carbide bezel on the Galactic Unitime. I was seriously considering the IWC Pilot Worldtimer. I sat on my hands as I wanted a bracelet on my travel watch.
I picked up the Breitling Galactic Unitime World Time (Black Dial) with a huge discount. The tungsten carbide bezel is great. Tungsten carbide is very hard and keeps a shine.
I have a 6.5 inches wrist but it is flat not round. I managed to remove 2 links and adjust the buckle to the 2nd tightest setting. It fits but it just looks big on my wrist. However, I have seen people wore Alain Sebastian and Royal Oak Offshore watches with wrists like mine. I guess, this is the style now with BIG watches. The finish on this watch and bracelet is very nice.
The dial is not busy at all. The map sort of disappears and fade into the background when I glanced for the time. The dial is very readable. What surprised me that the seconds hand is luminated. The seconds hand on the Galactic Unitime has a counter balance Breitling Logo which I think looks nice.
One more thing, I really like the simple operation of this one crown adjustment of the movement. I rather not have extra pushers, crowns or recess pusher that requires a tool to adjust time. This Breitling Galactic Unitime World Time has offset marks on locations for DST also. This is really convenient.
It appears the that Breitling Galactic Unitime World Time is no longer in production as I could not locate it on Breitling’s website. Some folks view buying watches as investment. I buy what I like. This Breitling Galactic Unitime is my travel watch now. While my Breitling is COSC certified. It is not holding time as accurate as my other Rolex watches. I probably need to have it serviced and adjusted.
It would be great if you guys could make a video comparing Dual time, GMT, and Word Time watches.

there was actually a story for having the fish-crown on the so-called recent Big Pilot release... it wasn't meant to be a public release. It was a little "project" IWC did with (and for) 14 IWC collectors in Hong Kong. The fish crown wasn't supposed to be there originally (and neither was the big fish engraving on the back). It was... shall I say, a compromise in the end? long story which I probably shouldn't be saying too much in here. Anyway, that I think was a one-off thing.

It's funny, I have big wrists(22cm) and can wear my Big Pilot comfortably with a lot of wrist left over after the lugs, and yet when someone releases a smaller watch like a 38mm I don't feel the need to wander onto the internet and cry like a baby that it's not fair that I can't wear it, I just move on. What is so hard for some to understand that not everything is about them?

Don't blink 'cause this 44 wears like a 42 but is sometimes interpreted as a 43, except on Tuesdays when it definitely looks like a 45 but feels like a 46. Is that a 36? No it's a 38 that smells like a 85.
