I always loved Howard Drossin's work on Spinball, S&K, and Comix Zone. A lot of Sega fans overlook Western composers. Most composers in the 8 and 16-bit era were Japanese so there was a bigger talent pool. I also think Japanese chip-tunes appeal to Western audiences because they sound more exotic and unfamiliar (myself included) Some people love to criticize the US soundtrack for Sonic CD. I prefer the Japanese version overall but the American soundtrack is great and has a more upbeat sound. I think the American soundtrack has a few better tracks (Title Theme / Sonic Boom, PalmTree Panic Present, and the Boss music) *Even Spencer Nilsen said it was a tough act to follow but he's proud of it.* He kind of understood the backlash from critics who had already played the Japanese version. He compared it to replacing the music in Star Wars when people have already grown up listening to the original soundtrack. It's weird Sega thought we needed a separate soundtrack but it worked out for the best since we got two soundtracks instead of one
@@ATeaDaze Not sure if you knew this or not but this track is not by Drossin it’s by Bruce Coburn who barely has any other credits on vgmdb. I’m amazed how even lesser and even barely known composers end up writing dimes for Sonic. This recording is amazing. Like nothing I’ve ever heard.
@@robkilbride9242 You're right-- Brian Coburn made this track and he deserves credit for it. This always was my favorite song from Sonic Spinball. I wish he had more music out there too. Sega Retro only lists him on a few other games
An enhanced remix done properly! The percussion and horns are higher quality but the iconic synth leads are straight from the Genesis. It would have lost a lot of character and edge if they didn't use that dirty FM synthesizer. It's hard to replicate that aggressive/growling sound with a sampler or "equivalent" synth patch
This album was really stupidly conceived. It's meant to be an extended mix of the Sonic CD soundtrack, but then includes Sonic Spinball arrangements. But then it doesn't include all the compositions from Sonic Spinball... Why couldn't they have just created a separate album that was all the music from Spinball rearranged?
Just think. If Sega of America hadn't rejected the Japanese soundtrack to Sonic CD this magnificent recording would have never taken place.

Love how they kept the GEMS twang
This feels like I'm working for Eggman.
Lava Powerhouse: Bad Future

I can't upvote this hard enough.
This is the music of second stage of sonic spinball
mateus1491 except it’s a much much much better version
The original is pretty great too.
Best song
To this day I still think that at the part 0:40 it sounds something like from mortal kombat
We need the options one
That's really the best song on the game
@@brunocoringa455 ikr hella underated
Official Metallic Madness Past - US Version? (Xd). Also this sounds like a level that could be on classic PS1 Crash Bandicoots
No, this is from Sonic Spinball on the Genesis (not to be confused with Sonic Spinball on the Game Gear and Master System)
Damn clucks.
This whole game was clucked up.
Did anyone notice that the machine soundtrack is missing!
Yes and the DR Robotnik theme was also missing.
The Machine is missing too! I forgot to mention that one.
