“Crypto-Catholicism manifested itself in more or less an outward formula, not of the essence, but just to allay the pressures of sectarian levies, disturbances, violence, etc. Those who switched to Crypto-Catholicism, they still subscribed to Church stipulations, they attended liturgy, but out of sight. They couldn’t show it publicly.”

The majority of people from the mountainous parts of Kosovo belong to an underground community known as Crypto-Catholics. The Kosovan Albanians call them “ljaramani” or chameleonic. This phenomenon in the Balkans dates back to the 15th century, when this area fell to the Ottoman Empire. Unable to resist the pressure and terror imposed by the Turks, the majority of Kosovan Albanians publicly converted to Islam. However, some of them in the remote mountain villages, in the privacy of their homes, continued to practice the Catholic faith. They never lost hope that one day they would be able to once again publicly cross the Church threshold without fear of reprisals. This is their story.

Despite complaints, even by Party of Labour of Albania members, churches, tekkes, monasteries, and other religious institutions were either closed down or converted into warehouses, gymnasiums, or workshops by the end of 1967. (Not forgetting the Ottoman campaigns of centuries before) People who say there was no religious persecution in Albania should start studying history!

I personally, as a borderline Agnostic/Atheist, and living amongst radical Christians of all sects, truly know and understand how much of a lie Christianity is to these peoples. First and foremost, Christianity is just as foreign to Albanian Culture as is Islam, but Islam did not destroy a culture or great sciences and arts like Christianity did, it rivaled and replaced something so much inferior to it, it replaced Christianity. Islam is the religion of sciences and the arts, and its revival is awaiting. Many Christians think that to be Christian is to be European, that is absolutely incorrect. If Religion is culture and Christianity is your only culture, then you are nothing else than middle eastern.
As an Albanian I'm proud that we don't care too much about religion . mostly i would say, being Albanian is religious enough. (we know we've been christianized and islamized, but our true belief system goes purely to our family. That is our Religion as Albanians FAMILJA SHQIPTARE

I descend from Roman Catholic Albanians in fact my grandmother was born into a Roman Catholic Albanian family in Montenegro. Today however we are Muslims. Whilst I have respect for Church institutions the teachings of Paul is not something I subscribe to. Paul diverted from the disciples and it is for this reason why today I choose to keep the Islamic faith. However the face coverings that some women choose to adopt is not something I subscribe to and that includes Catholics. With all due respect to all Albanian Catholics. You are still my kin.
No serious historian of antiquity claims that St. Paul invented Christian theology. The Gospels are written in the first and second century, meanwhile Islam’s doctrine (due all respect) is based on Gnostic apocryphal Gospels which were written centuries after the orthodox ones.
Nice documentary but wrong choice of background music. The music used is Albanian but it is south Albanian or Toske Albanian music, which does not esiat among North Albanians or Gegs that Kosovo Albanians belong to. Instead they should use the Gege Albanian music in the background.

Seems like a pretty sensationalist documentary. I don't think Islam is to blame. I don't think Eastern Orthodox churches are to blame, either. Albania is a very tolerant country. People seem to, however, be more tied to nationality than religion. However, that carries issues of its own...

Most catholics forbid having an Albanian name. So much so that when mother Teresa became a nun for the Indian gypsies and abandoned her people, she changed her beautiful Albanian name to an Italian one, Teresa.
