Great video as usual Chief It’s a testament to your leadership that complicated repairs are done in a timely fashion, unlike my auto mechanic who would have my car incapacitated for days and days
Chief there is never a dull moment onboard!if its not one thing its another! but with a good crew and good leadership that can handle it properly, the job gets done right!
You know chief, I look at you, listen to you, I see my late uncle. You don't look like him, you don't sound like him. But I see a lot of him in you. He was a chief engineer on merchant vessels for many years. I read so many of his books about electrical topics and learned much from those books. My uncle was very skilled. Electrical, HVAC, you name it. He had lots of stories. Many trips to Viet Nam during the 60's and 70's. It's like the ghost of my uncle on UA-cam and you are nothing alike personally but almost like a twin professionally. Best regards and good fortunes on your travels. 😎😎
@@ChiefMAKOi You have a confident and relaxed manner. You clearly explain what you do, why and what happens for someone with some mechanical affinity. Matter of fact but with compassion.
As a brand new deckhand in 70's I was on-boarded in Anacortes Washington onto Overseas Alice, an oil tanker bound for Alaska. The burly bosun ordered the crew to the forecastle for a meet & greet. There he lambasted us with "You son-of-bit*&*& better not f*&*-around, If you plan on not following orders, lets have it out here and now. I'll whip your ass up and down the floor. etc-etc.......Anyone? Anyone? Good, go stow your gear." Later on watch he encouraged me on the great life the SIU (Seafarer International Union) provided him; a new Ford Thunderbird, a couple of houses for him and his wonderful wife. But the tone had been set. And topped with the rollingest voyage I never could have imagined. The good part? The Alaska coast line was unreal.
Each ship you work on is always so neat and well attended to you see videos some ships the engine room looks like a oil spill and the crew don't give a dam, your guys seem to take pride in there ship and job and it really shows!!
The last time i was inside a ship's engine room, i was probably 12 years old. Was a Greek tanker with a 7 cylinder main engine. I wish i had taken that career path, i never got married nor had children so i think seafaring could have been a good fit. I still love ships, especially the engine room. I'm a machinist by trade but have always loved n been fascinated by mechanical creations, currently busy making a five journal high pressure water blasting pump crankshaft n it's journal journal layout makes me think of a ship's main engine crank.
Great hands on video, Chief. The panks and sabotage is not right, and should be prosecuted. "Quickly and safely." I think you met safely and quickly...
That actually happens sometimes. Although they sometimes allow when the ship is at anchor. But if totally necessary, as a last option, we could stop the ship in the open sea and carry out maintenance while drifting.
Great vlog as always chief! I agree. This is soul southing. I watch Big jets tv, were airplane land and take off. Keep up the good work! Be safe! Btw. Grey hair is a blessing, just ask a balled guy!
Lubricants, o-rings, specialized parts of every kind. I would guess there's a Planned Inventory System that's part of, or parallel to, the Planned Maintenance System. If you've already done a video on this, I'm sorry to have missed it. Do you think you'll be teaching again at PNMA when you go ashore to your farm?
The right amount of rest? I'd held back a story. In 87 USN there was an E5 Messman 2nd class. He scrubbed an oven in the Wardroom galley (kitchen). He left a cotton bar-mop towel in the oven on self-cleaning cycle. Then he fell asleep. Under an hour later it burst into flame. The O2 level, officers country, filled with smoke. NO ONE DIED. Very well could have been disastrous. When you're supposed to sleep.... sleep.
You are correct, there is not a whole lot to see, or, if there is, I never saw it, in Port Said. I wonder what the name of the jack-up is that you passed by as your ship was entering port. We had a small supply base there when we were working for BP north of Port Said, and I got to see a lot of the shipping entering/leaving the Suez Canal.
OH I have a request for a future video: A lot of us found you as a result of the situation in the Suez Canal with the Ever Given. Do you have any updates on that ship and situation?
what happened to your head? i'm happy you're once again uploading content.. there are a couple channels i look forward to seeing, yours is one. i envy you.
Great video. How often do you recognize new crewmembers you had met previously? I suppose it is a relatively small pool of people skilled enough to do this work (& who work for your company). & what percentage of the ones you recognize were from your pmma-teaching as opposed to just meeting on previous ship contracts?
Chief, quick question. @9:10 I see a compression fitting I think. Those are allowed on ships? In the automotive world we were told we needed to make flare fittings to make the repair properly.
You may have covered this in another video, but is there someone with medical experience on board? Do they have things like antibiotics if someone has an infection or pain killers if someone breaks their arm? What can the crew expect for serious issues like an appendix rupture, etc.
We have a ships hospital on board full of all kinds of drugs and equipment, only a 20 man crew on a bulk carrier but the captian and the chief officer have completed a 'doctor in a week' course as we call it. Although we are all trained in advanced first aid. We have antibiotics, and even things like morphine, just so we can control the pain until we can get an emergency evac or until we get to the next port.
When my Pinay wife saw you she burst out "he's gotten fat". Of course as one man to another I have your back so I immediately responded "he's been ashore for quite some time enjoying lechon". 😋 Now I as a permanent landlubber will enjoy some chocolate cake and fresh strawberries. Yep, I know exactly where those delicious calories come from... 😇

Hi Chief I have a question, do you as chief eng, write a performance evaluation for each crew in the eng deparment as week or month duty? sorry for my english.
Your English is very good, not perfect but easily understood by this original (!!) English speaker! The only thing I'd correct is: "...for each crew member on a weekly or monthly basis" ;-))

I was diagnosed with Incomplete Right Bundle Branch Block (IRBBB) that became my ground for disqualification. I hope to be given an explanation because, it is hard to accept my disqualification knowing that there is a situation worse than mine but got admitted inside. If the Harbormaster had denied repairs, when would they have been carried out? The next port. What if that HM denies them also.
