There's a big difference between "Castillo is being shopped" and "Mariners are listening on Castillo." Ms aren't looking to take the best possible trade, they're looking to be blown away for an offer for Castillo.
since all the pitchers in FA this year are signing monster deals and only Barnes and Snell are piers we are going to get an elite bat for him if he lets us trade him he's got a no-trade clause he could use if he doesn't like the city we trade to JMO
I'm beginning to think that the Mariners aren't going to make any major moves this season. Sign a bunch of jamborinis and be good with that. It's time to call for a change in ownership because, honestly, it's the same story year after year.
I'll be shocked if they trade Luis Castillo before Rōki Sasaki decides where he's going. I think they aren't willing to risk 'only' having a four-man rotation with Gilbert, Miller, Woo and Kirby. However, we're goddamn desperate for hitters right now. If we can save money, ditch an injury risk, and get one or two serious hitters in return? 100% we should be doing that regardless of what happens with Sasaki. Yes, the rotation matters, but hitters play far more often and the rest of the rotation can compensate for a sub-par fifth starter.
The fact that Castillo's no-trade clause lasts until 2026 tells me that Jerry had scoped things out with Castillo on board this year a long time ago. You're right and I'm hoping something gets figured out but Jerry seems to be drawing himself into a tighter corner with each passing day.
Sasaki Roki will require an MLB team with a minimum 6-man rotation if he wishes to be a starter. In NPB it's usually a 6-day rest for starting pitchers. Seattle is an ideal city for someone like Sasaki Roki, especially since he grew up in coastal Tohoku region. Proximity to Japan, direct fligts, previous successful Japanese players, similar climate, delicious sea food, and many Japanese supermarkets and schools...is probably the best in terms of lifestyle. But if the Mariners are expecting Sasaki to be part of a 5-man rotation from the beginning, they won't have a chance in signing Sasaki. Of the 3 seasons he pitched in Japan, the most he pitched was 120 plus innings because he's still developing as a pitcher. He needs a team that understands his journey, and ease him into MLB schedule, culture, game plan etc. Even for experienced Japanese pitchers, it usually takes one or two seasons to get adjusted to the US. Which is also why he didn't wait until 25 years old. He sees the next 2 seasons as an adjustment period. So far it seems only a few teams that have been following his development for years seem to understand him.
@@yo2trader539I hear the 6 man rotation but it only needs to get him to the 18 to 20 start mark this years. I think the best case is tucker is traded to the cubs and that gives the cubs the push to get pitching and Nico horner and a little more for Castillo. Well the roki and Hancock would be fine as a six like they did with woo sitting him here and there and getting Hancock 10 starts plus and trading him in the off-season if he keeps developing. Ppl say roki is a stretch but the history of young pitchers with the Ms is not normal hopefully enough to swing in there direction
@@yo2trader539 That's been the case for NPB pitchers for decades though, and they've all had to adapt to MLB standards. While he would definitely benefit from a 6-man rotation, I don't think a man who's only stated goal is to be "the best player in the world" is going to give a hard "no" to any team that wants him in a 5-man rotation.
@@yo2trader539 if that’s genuinely the case and nothing will ever convince him, they need to forget about him. We don’t need a sixth starter. We don’t have an infield. We have half a first baseman, a 2B with the defensive prowess of beached whale, a shortstop coming off a down year, and literally nothing at 3B. We don’t need Rōki Sasaki to win ballgames but we do need to write something on the lineup card every day.
Peter Gammons said the Mariners don’t want Casa because how he is protected to hit in TMobile Park. Thank God. I been commenting this topic under so many videos
We needed to try and trade Castillio for Tucker but, Houston won't trade him to us we offered Woo last year and Colt for him but, they thought they might make another run and didn't want to send the championship lefty bat to us assholes LMAO😁🤣🤣

Castillo for Casas, Payton Tolle, and Nelly Taylor. Canzone, Locklear and Bliss for Arraez and Kash Mayfield Emerson Hancock for Maikel Garcia 1st, 2nd, and 3rd taken care of and you should have plenty to sign Santana to DH and make a run at Sasaki and possibly a 6th starter on a short term deal. They add some more young arms for when they lose some in free agency. Get some club control at the corners and a guy that doesn't strike out and can flat out hit 1. Robles RF 2. Arraez 2B 3. The big move won't happen until after the 15th of January. At that point the M's will know if they have Sasaki or not. If they do, the trade front really opens up. Right now, Castillo is the "bird in the hand". With regard to moving pitchers, I haven't heard anything about the status of Juan Mercedes and Logan Evans. Those two guys really intrigue me because I feel that they provide a lot of depth behind the starting 5. I really want to hear about where they sit in the pecking order. Is one or both of them better than Hancock? What are their strengths and weaknesses. Inquiring minds want to know...
Imagine them doing it but being forced to postpone it by one day because Castillo's like "I'm invoking my no-trade clause until after my b-day party you jerks!" ☹
I'm glad you said this. I think too often people think we can't replace Castillo with Hancock. What they're forgetting is that we don't need to replace Luis Castillo...we would need a 5th starter. And Emerson Hancock is the definition of a 5th starter.

Cubs arent doing Hoerner for Castillo 1 for 1. Nico is a better player, much cheaper, with 2 years of control vs at least 3 years of control of Castillo. Feel like most talks coming out of fans is overvaluing what Castillo provides in the future. Nathan Eovaldi over the last 3 years is pretty comparable to Luis Castillo. Yes he's older and doesnt eat as many innings, but performance wise when they are both on the mound the results are pretty close to equal. So maybe Castillo gets slightly more, but at the same time Max Fried just got $27M/yr. Castillo isn't the ace he was in the past any more. Teams aren't looking at what Castillo offered in 2019. They are looking what he offers in the future and he's more like a solid #3 that's going to pitch 170+ innings and not lose you games. He's on a 2 year downward slide. His HR rate, hard hit rate, ground ball rate, strikeout rate, pitch movement, and velocity are all going the wrong direction and he's in a very pitcher friendly park. I wouldn't at all be surprised if all these talks around Castillo are fizzling out so quickly because the Mariners are valuing him in that same, "Hey this guy is still a legitimate #1 pitcher so we want your #1 guy in return on top of taking on Castillo's entire contract." Teams aren't paying those kinds of players for a guy who's maybe saving you $2M/yr vs the market.
Nailed it. They should pin this comment. Jerry wants teams to take Castillo (and his contract), but Hoyer explicitly asked for Woo, Dombrowski for Kirby or Gilbert, and Breslow for Woo or Miller, then _all of a sudden_ the rumored trades immediately die.
@teko1020 Totally agree. I think a Cubs trade would be more like Castillo and well-regarded catcher prospect Harry Ford (blocked by Raleigh) for Hoerner and a depth starter like Jordan Wicks or Javier Assad - either are upgrades over Hancock and can slot in as 5th starter behind Kirby, Gilbert, Miller, and Woo. (If I was the Mariners, I would prefer Wicks in this scenario for some LHP variance with the rest of their all-RHP rotation). Cubs can replace Hoerner internally with Shaw, Triantos, or even Busch, only take on $12M AAV in deal after trading Hoerner's $12M for Castillo's $24M, and Ford becomes much better long-term catcher plan in Chicago over Amaya or even Ballesteros, who is probably better suited for DH/1B.
When you're thinking of trading Castillo & his team friendly deal; it's not about winning a Championship. They're only creating more holes. This Ownership is wasting a Golden opportunity. They'd be better off running it back with Turner or adding Santana & 1 more bat by trading prospects. So I'm with Colton on no 1 for 1 with Casas. Also for the M's to be banking on Roki is a poor way to run an organization. It's extremely unlikely and wastes time when you could be focusing on other acquisitions.
Hoerner would be a great addition if we can get him without giving our starting pitching and trading for Bichette shouldn't take too big of a package to obtain
They should go after Luis Arraez and Xander Bogarts. You get an on base guy and some a guy with some pop sign Santana and Sasaki call it good. Draft Xavier Neyens
This ownership is cheap, plain and simple. If we had more money to play with we might actually be able to fill more than one hole in our lineup next year and become a better team
