Terry Callier ... simply the greatest. One of the very few singers who make you well up when you listen. The epitome of a "soulful" voice, the rich, deep, creamy textures he weaves into songs is truly magical. Sadly, sadly, sadly missed. Always one of the 1st people I say "go listen to", when asked "so who do you recommend?".
Today, I heard this great voice and heart for the first time. It seemed to match my mood and felt gracious and deep in the tears that ease-fully flowed, as Cotton Eyed Joe came up on a playlist. I thought it was Nina Simone for a brief moment. Now I will never forget this name, this voice, this soul. It has profoundly moved something in me on this day. Coming across a visual on him here, and this beautiful song....soul gifts, soul medicine. So much love to everyone. Let us sing each other home.
Smashing, thanks for leaving your comments, that's great to hear. There's plenty of Terry's work out there to lose yourself in. My first experience was a compilation I chanced upon in a shop 20 years or so ago, The Essential Terry Callier. I have listened to that so many times and other of his original albums too, but somehow haven't done so for a while- I'll put that right today at your prompting!
Gone 3 years Oct 27, 2105...love him and his music! This song has a special place for me. Terry Callier himself showed me how to play the song on guitar! We were sitting on my couch and and I asked him to show me some of my favorite songs of his! Jim Mullen-great solo!!
Amazing! Which other songs did he show you and how did it come about that he was visiting at your place? When and where did that happen please just curious? Lucky you :)
+John Arundell Well he's my Father in-law! He was living with us and I had been trying to figure some out on my own...he showed me Lazarus man, Satin doll, Keep your heart right...I think that was it. He didn't play too much at home here.
Brian Dullum Lazarus Man is my favourite. I'm in Australia and when I searched whether he ever performed here I found a dedication to Terry from a man who wrote a book about losing his son to cancer, 'Can I Take My Panda Daddy'. Apparently he toured Australia for Bluesfest 2003 which is held every Easter in beautiful Byron Bay where the author, Greg Crooks, attended and wrote the following postscript in his book a couple of years later. "And finally, for being guiding lights through these difficult times, I want to thank the late Eva Cassidy for her singing and Terry Callier (thank you Terry for the personal contact during Byron Bay's 2003 Bluesfest) for his songs and voice." I thought you might like to know that. Also when I looked him up a bio stated Jules Holland regards Terry as the greatest soul singer ever. You must be very proud :)
What a great song! What a great guy was Terry Callier! He was one of us, you know, an "Ordinary Joe", except that... well, you can see and hear for yourselves!
im just so glad that he is in my mind finally getting recognition for his great soul that poured and splashed out musically and lyrically.he oozed peace..and may he rest in peace..xx
I love Mr Callier’s music. KTSU 90.9 here in Houston turned me and a whole lot of others onto him. Every time I would hear him while going to work got me in a good mood. Did not know that he transitioned to his angelic self until seeing the posts. RIP and thank you for contributions to this side of your journey.
Magical song up there with Where a Lark Is Singing 3 years gone the most under rated singer songwriter of his time. So many fantastic songs that don't sound the same when covered.
Thankfully, I listen to David Johansen's Mansion of Fun every week. He introduced me to this genius as well as many other lesser known bits of brilliance. The cliche goes "better late than never." With Mr Callier, it is more than accurate.
How the years rush by, seems like only a few years ago I was sitting in Camden, probably the Opposite Lock listening to him with my brother. And as Jools hints at there, more loved here in the Uk for some reason. I clearly remember seeing an album of his in 1993 on the wall of King Bee records in Manchester for £500, gone by the saturday. When I was in San Francisco in 2003, I filled all the gaps in my Callier vinyl collection for about $5 each.
So underrated and unsung but I'm so thankful for his wonderful unique sound
Miss you so much

one of the greatest song writers ever lived in my opinion
An incredible voice. I have ALL his albums with 'Timepiece' being one of my favourites.
EXCEPTIONAL song, artist and performance. Really GREAT stuff.
A beautiful, meaningful musical prayer with the message boldly in its title

I often say to myself ...keep your heart right and try to follow this
Three things will last forever--faith, hope, and love--and the greatest of these is love.
...so true!
I'll keep my heart right
...hearing him, is loving him

What color is love is my favorite followed by the jazzy, spiritual vibe of this one. Bravo
Fantastic song I first heard in the '90s.
Great technique here: 3:30. Never seen anyone play like that before.
J'ADORE,je le passe "en boucle":m'en lasse pas!....et j'aime les mots, aussi:"garde ton coeur droit"...oui...R.I.P.,Terry! et merci....
Terry Callier was (is) amazing.
That's not a mc, that's Jools Holland, a great musician himself who happens to have a great music show on British tv.
J'aime ses chansons depuis si longtemps, quel homme formidable.
pure genius gone far to soon x
