Messi's arrival is definitely big for MLS. It's not only bring global eyeballs to MLS but also force the MLS clubs to upgrade their teams in defense , midfield and attack. It will eventually make the leafue more competitive.

I agree but they can’t do that properly until they lift the cap space. This has been the biggest detriment to the growth of the MLS

Slightly disagree, think Messi's signing opens the eyes of Americans about how big football and Messi is around the world, it's almost at religion levels in many countries and not a sport in the normal sense. If you want to make the MLS more competitive then you need to introduce a league system with promotion and relegation. It changes the mentality of players and spectators in that the result of every single game becomes massively important. Increasing the jeopardy so that teams can be relegated and players face salary decreases if they are relegated focuses the mind. Also teams in the top tier will play the best teams every week. Agree get rid of the salary cap and in order to attract the worlds better players in their prime the MLS need to find a way to enter the European Champions League or hope a world club cup becomes more prestigious and valuable than the Euro Champs league.

I’m an American who loves soccer, and I’ve never considered watching the MLS. Now I’ve watched multiple games, including non-inter Miami games, and bought Apple TV just for Messi. I’d say for me alone it’s a success story. I know many friends who always watched the World Cup, but could never get into club soccer because we have no relation to overseas teams. We’re used to having our own successful teams stateside. Maybe this will bridge that gap.

the fact that the inter Miami’s instagram account went from less than 1m to today’s 13.5M should tell you the driving force of Messi and how much influence he has in the sport. Before Messi, I watched literally 1 MLS game. The impact of his influence in the sport won’t be known until we see some of those 6-10 year old kids that go to the stadiums to watch him play become pros and give out interviews saying that Messi was their big influence to become pro football players.

Those Instagram subs could be from anywhere in the world, so it doesn't necessarily reflect how he'll impact the perception of soccer/football in the US. I don't think he'll be that big of an influence. If anything influences soccer's acceptance in the US, it'll just be all the kids of immigrant parents who love soccer and don't care about American football.

American kids who love soccer just got a huge blessing! Back when I was a kid it was so hard to just find a soccer game to play for fun, I’m sure there will be more leagues and teams for kids to join now that Messi is bringing the popularity of the sport to America.
Kids will view soccer in a more positive light now that they see how big a world class soccer player can be. When they see super stars of other sports like LeBron James and Serena Williams come to show their respect to the goat they won’t think basketball or tennis is a superior sport anymore.

Messi being here is huge for American soccer in the short term: Miami tickets are a hot commodity and every team left on their schedule this year that plays in an NFL stadium (Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago) has opened up the whole stadium to sell extra tickets to meet the demand.. The challenge will be retaining the fans that come to games just to see him. And as we saw in Miami's game in the Leagues Cup against Atlanta United (when half the stadium left as soon as Messi was subbed out) that is going to be a challenge. But I think the supercharge to soccer in America will come from a different avenue and that is several straight years of high level soccer tournaments being hosted in the US:
    2024 Copa America
    2025 Club World Cup
    2026 World Cup
    2027 Women's World Cup (maybe)
    2028 Olympic soccer (in LA)
That could be five straight summers of high level soccer tournaments being played in the US (the 2027 Women's World Cup is the only one not confirmed officially, though the US has announced a joint bid with Mexico). If soccer doesn't take off after that, plus having Messi here for three or four years, then it probably never will

The callback to the signing of Pelé has a somewhat ironic implication. Both his team and that entire version of the MLS went bankrupt a short while after he and the other stars of his era left. Of course bringing in Messi has great short term benefits, but what the MLS and American national team really need is a more professional approach to youth development.

The MLS isn't making any money and the ratings have always been poor. Even the finals ratings are mediocre. Talent like Messi might improve ratings for the games he's in and help his club in general, but it's not going to save the league. MLS clubs are massively overpriced and for the simple reason that it's a "fenced league" without promotion-and-relegation. Essentially, the MLS is a giant bubble which could pop at any time, whether that's in 5 years or 15 years.
American soccer can only be taken seriously when it introduces pro-rel. Unlike Canada and Australia which are huge geographic countries with roughly 33 million people, the US is 330 million people and can absolutely accommodate at least 3 levels of pro-rel. They can be divided into regions and conferences, so smaller clubs don't have to waste money on frequent cross-country flights nor be fatigued from frequent medium-distance travel between coasts. MLS should be merged in a direct pyramid with USL Championship and USL League One.

Sadly, Messi will not supercharged professional soccer in the USA. Only the MLS can do it. The MLS needs to find ways to build and retain home grown talent through their youth academies. Messi was in Frisco, TX the home of the Dallas Cowboys to play FC Dallas and the whole city was shut down in Frisco. Fc Dallas has a small stadium downtown Frisco. We have local HS football teams with larger stadiums. They should have moved that game to Cowboy’s Stadium in Arlington to the Cotton Bowl downtown Dallas. I would have paid $1000 a ticket to see that game. MLS could have easily sold out Cowboys Stadium and of course Jerry would have loved it because he would get a piece of the pie.

Messi can 100% boost football to make it compete against NBA and gain massive following & viewrship for this sports. However, bringing Messi is only the first Step. Now it depends how the management team and even the Government handle the next phase. They have to make some heavey investments to make MLS a big competetitive league to attrack more players. Lastly, they need to add new things so it can stand out from the rest of the leagues. Invite celebrities in most crucial games, Use Hollywood to make football more popular. Let audience know watching football makes them cool. All these things will 100% help. In 30 years time, they could be in top 5 best leaguses. Nothing is impossible with the right plans and investments.
Edit: Regaring NBA comparisons, The whole world knows football is 100 times better than basketball but NBA is still number 1 sports in America & as Major League Soccer must overthrow NBA from Top. Otherwise, its impossible for MLS to compete with La Liga or premier league. They need to make football No.1 sports in America first and later to the rest of the world.

One of the main reasons Soccer (Football) has been stifled in the U.S. is because advertisers hate it.
45 minutes with no ads and only a slotted amount of time at half-time to run ads is problematic for the companies that pay the bills.
Think about it... almost 30% of all American Football games are just advertisements. That could never happen in Soccer.
The sport needs to be re-structured for the mass audience. This is a great first step.

Well, MLS needs to bridge the salary gap between MLS, NHL, NFL and NBA. The salary cap will force players to choose another game than soccer. There's also a huge discrepancy on MLS vs European clubs salary. Less talented players will play in MLS as they will earn more if they'll go to Europe. At the end of the day, players will just want to earn money like other normal people.

Messi is hitting 40, he still has some magic left, but most of it has already been used. Beckham was only famous for being a spice boy, by the time he went to MLS he was a bench warmer at Real Madrid. If you want MLS to grow start hiring young talented players, world class players, look at the last WC and hire everyone under 30 from the best 8 teams, that will increase MLS competitiveness, bringing players in their old age will not.

When MLS starts playing in Football Stadiums, it will have been supercharged. Problem is, only a player of Messi's caliber can sell them out in America right now. If you open up Inter Miami games in Cowboys Stadium or any 50,000+ seating arena, you will really begin to drive popularity into the sport.

There are five US teams in MLS that play in football stadiums and three of them average very well: Atlanta United has been drawing 45,000 people per game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium (also home to the Falcons) since joining the league in 2017, Charlotte FC averages 36,000 people per game at Bank of America Stadium (also home to the Panthers) since they started in 2021 and the Seattle Sounders have drawn 40,000 people per game at Lumen Field (also home to the Seahawks) since their entry into MLS way back in like 2009. The other two are the Chicago Fire playing at Soldier Field (also home to the Bears) and the New England Revolution (also home to the Patriots). They don't draw particularly well.

The appletv deal was the best thing that happened to MLS, because MLS and NBA, are the team leagues that have the most international appeal from US and someone from Greece, China or Brazil has a great chance of buying the package, and we still continue with games on FOX, FS1 and TSN locally, and Univison in the Leagues Cup.

What would've been ideal is Apple TV+ getting the global rights to all the games (i.e. non-US and Canada) and blacking out the local games and having local cable companies broadcast the games in the US and Canada. Live sports is the one thing people still watch on TV and having a cable deal (with regional blackouts) is still the best way for leagues to make money on the TV side. The fact they had to settle for Apple TV+ getting to broadcast all the games without blackouts shows that the MLS is losing money on their TV deal lol

Messi is simply orders of magnitude better than anyone else in the league and by far the best the league has ever seen. Period. Even at this point in his career he is one of the top 5 players in the world and his touch, skill, sophistication and vision is on another plane. He's instantly made Inter Miami not only credible but one of the top teams in the league just by himself. Add in Busquets and Jordi Alba along with a renewed Josef Martinez and an emerging Robert Taylor and they have talent and an attack the likes of which the league has never seen before. They legitimately have a chance to climb out of the cellar, snag a playoff spot and perhaps take the title, even with the worst record in the league right now. They're THAT dangerous.

Lionel Messi's arrival at Major League Soccer Club Inter Miami has caused a stir in the United States, with the soccer star's global appeal introducing the league to a brand new audience. Messi will play for Miami through the 2025 season, earning nearly $60 million, plus an ownership stake in Inter Miami and a signing bonus. Apple's streaming service has also benefited from Messi's arrival, with the soccer star helping to increase Apple TV+ subscribers. As the U.S. gears up to co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup with Mexico and Canada, Major League Soccer is trying to capitalize on Messi's arrival. The combined value of all MLS teams is $16.2 billion, a far cry from every other major professional sport in America. Messi's arrival is expected to help drive the league's fan base, but his appeal to those who don't follow the sport could help introduce Major League Soccer to a brand new audience. Messi's arrival is being compared to Pele's arrival in the United States, which introduced the sport to many Americans, and David Beckham's arrival in the early days of Major League Soccer, which gave the league credibility as it was growing.

Messi is a big step, but America’s challenges with soccer (football) is more of a systematic issue. Like the US women’s team just faced after decades of being at the top, European countries recruit kids into professional systems. In America, you have to go through youth “clubs”, then college, and THEN get drafted. By then, European players have been playing with professionals since childhood. The US men’s team have been struggling with this issue, and now the US woman’s team is since they had a head start over Europe since they didn’t take woman’s soccer seriously, but now they do and have caught up.
