David is the most passionate graceful male skater I've ever seen. How tragic he's unable to perform the jumps required to compete. His use of ballet in his skating is just astounding. The world is worse off for the ever increasing demands for crazier & crazier jumps. Gone are the wonderful days where beauty, grace & emotion were paramount.
He is absolute beauty on ice. His grace , balletic moves , body placement and flexibility. Completely unmatched. Such a shame skating has become about jumps. This man's skating is what skating is about. He and Jason Brown understand ❤
Figure skating has lost its beauty of motion with all the ungodly jumps required in its performance now days. This young man is truly the epitome of beautiful and graceful figure skating. ❤
This is the story of David Shapiro who had all the potential to become a great competitive figure skater, blessed with rare artistic talent as well as extraordinary flexibility. But fate decided his future in a different way, and as a result of injuries he had to undergo surgery from which he could not fully recover, at least as far as jumping was concerned. However, thanks to his passion for figure skating and ballet, he became a kind of ballet figure skater, occasionally performing spectacular performances in which he expressed intense emotions with his entire body (including his face) incredibly supple and loose. .It is a feast for the eyes and the soul. So if you like David, share and like this video, not to help my channel, but to help David be known and recognized as the great ice skater artist that he is. Thanks for him.
@@aquastar7990 I agree. FS is more of an art than a sport, and current developments are not going in a favorable direction for this discipline. For example, I have seen among the juniors and some seniors skaters who do the jumps correctly and other basic elements like the camel spin horribly executed, some even fall while doing the spins or lose their balance, the step sequences are sluggish and unconvincing, stiff arms and rigid upper body... these are the consequences of giving priority to jumps, and juniors who have less endurance have difficulty holding on until the end because there are 10 jumps in a free program, It's too much and the poor people in the end lose points because they almost can't do it anymore.
This was artistically STUNNING. It is almost a forgotten element among most of the quad-jumping studs today. Jason Brown has had a good idea on executing an artistic program that scored every bit as much as the physical program. David, in my opinion, has Brown beat in this category. I hope he can get his jumps back because with this creativity on ice, he could become almost unbeatable. Good luck, David...I am a fan.
It certainly was. I'm not sure if the jump-fest that is figure skating today actually deserves this kind of artistry - maybe it needs its own genre? How sad for this young man, and for all of us too, to have a wonderful future ended before it ever really got started - and I have no doubt it would have been truly wonderful.
I applaud you, David. You skate not just with your body but with your soul. As a former professional ballet dancer and a pre-gold icedance I appreciate your intensity, passion and artistic quality on the ice. 🙏
Thank you for telling about David. I would've never met his talent in my view without your caring. My heart's been always drown to the love itself that a skater has for the skating and how sad it is to see how many of the popular and famous ones are loosing it in everlasting challenges of this sport and everything else what comes from that. David's passion will outstand in years and years to come for it is truth. And what is true that stays unbroken in some shape or form for the starving souls to find it under covers of the world and to love it as deerly as the heart is capable in its entire richness.
Thank you for your nice comment. A talent like this young man and his sad story moved my heart, but as you say the truth and authenticity of his gift will triumph, I wish him so with all my heart.
Amazing talent! What an artist on ice he is. The ballet training is obvious. I think someone should try to steer David Shapiro into practicing figures so he can compete in the World Figure and Fancy Skating championships, held every year in the Fall, in Lake Placid! Blade skills and artistry are at the forefront at that competition, not jumps!
I did not know about this competition. Thank you!! I am so tired of quads and lack of artistry seen in many figure skaters today. I’m old school - he is like a male Sasha Cohen.
@@lydwinaofschiedam2685 If you think you're "old school" in comparing him to Sasha Cohen, then I am "ancient academy" since he reminds me of Toller Cranston and John Curry from the 1970s. John Curry was noted for combining ballet and modern dance influences into his skating. As an amateur competitor, Curry was noted for his ballet-like posture and extension, and his superb body control. Following the 1976 World Championships, Curry turned professional and founded a touring skating company along the same lines as a traditional dance company. Besides choreographing routines for the company, Curry commissioned works from such noted dance choreographers as Sir Kenneth MacMillan, Peter Martins and Twyla Tharp. Along with Canadian skater Toller Cranston, Curry was responsible for bringing the artistic and presentation aspects of men's figure skating to a new level. When Toller Cranston was 13, he developed Osgood-Schlatter disease and was initially told that he would never skate again. After eight weeks in a cast, he resumed training, and won the 1964 Canadian Junior Championship the next month. Cranston often came in first in his free skating programs, but his low placements in compulsory figures limited his overall scores and placements. He quickly gained a reputation as the most innovative and exciting artistic skater of his time, one of the first to emphasize use of the whole body to express the music as well as to execute skating moves in best form, to lie down while sliding down the ice and to wear elaborate costumes. Even during his competitive career, Cranston had talked about his goal in skating being to create what he called "theatre on ice", or skating as a form of dance expression, rather than winning medals. He explained that the purpose of perfecting the technical aspects of the sport was to allow the body to express the music or emotion. Unlike David Shapiro, Cranston and Curry executed their jumps very well during the heights of their careers. It is understandable why Shapiro cannot perform the multi-revolution jumps. This should not hold back recognition and celebration of the artistry of his ice skating.
@@luminiferous1960 I'll join your "ancient academy". He reminded me immediately of John Curry and, also, because of his height and elegance, Robin Cousins whose professional performances are so much more beautiful than his amateur ones. Sad to say, although I remember Toller Cranston I can't recall his performances, so will have to look him up on here.
Thank you so much for this wonderful video 👏👏👏 I absolutely love his skating, his passion for skating and his ability to feel the music and perform with his whole body, like you mentioned, also with his face. To the person who posted this. There is nothing tragic about David's skating. He is one of the most beautiful skaters alive. He is well known among skating fans. I have posted a couple of his performances on my X page.
You´re lucky to know him, but amoung a lot of skating fans following me he is unknown, just read the comments and you´ll see, that´s why I wanted my suscribers in YT and others platform and anyone else to know him. That´s great if you published some video of David too.
I have watched thousands of hours of figure skating but have rarely seen anything this awesome. Thank you for making David Shapiro known. I fervently hope he can somehow come to the fame he deserves.
Thank you so much for sharing this video. A real dancer on ice. Passion, sensuality, he is amazing. This dance is not about showing off figures and then skating in-between them. This is fantastic.
Wow this guy is the most graceful skater I have ever seen. The mere fact that he is as flexible as he is makes his skating poetry in motion, talented young man for sure. Hope he gets the recognition he deserves.
This reminds me of seeing Toller Cranston's spiral for the first time when I was a child in the 70s. Such open hips and a strong back. I met him many times in NYC and he was always such fun, so witty, kind, and always with great stories. I had to stop skating due to fibromyalgia and chronic pain. I love this sport, it's a beautiful dragon: you get so close to study the scales and see the gold, but sometimes we get burned by the fire. It's scars that last, but oh, for the moment! It's everything. Thanks for posting.
Yes, you need iron health to continue this magnificent sport as long as you want, I love it so much that I wish to reincarnate as a skater in another life, now I am too old with back and joint problems, but I admire all skaters, from the smallest to the largest. Thank you for your comment.
Yes jhon curry comes to mind ! We need to see this more ! Not another "quad" ! This kind off skating is gracefully touches c the heart and is just so beautiful! ! Artistry on ice !
My first thought was also John Curry who wanted to do ballet but I believe his father wouldn't allow it so he did ballet but on ice which was acceptable! It is true, I think, that young dancers are now expected to pull off feats in the air that older dancers would have regarded as undesirable, dangerous and not balletic. This boy has such grace and presence that he will be a joy to watch without these tricks "en l'air ".
Wow, that was just beautiful to behold. I am a fan of Yuzuru Hanyu and David is another ethereal performer like him but is clearly even more flexible than the phenomenal force that is Yuzuru. I hope that Yuzuru is aware of David and that they collaborate in his ice shows which would be the perfect platform to showcase David's incredible talent and skills....sick of the ISU's never-ending changes to the requirements and their quest for skaters to perform nothing but big jumps...this is much more pleasing to watch than someone just doing massive jumps one after another.
Well, Daisuke Takahashi did discover David on UA-cam, was so impressed with the beautiful style that he invited the totally unknown skater to his shows this year. Even skated a program in duo. David is kinda famous among Japanese skating fans!😀

He is a beautiful skater. The world of figure skating needs more skaters like him. I hope he continues and finds an avenue for him to show us the beauty of figure skating. I wish the sport didn't rely on doing quad jumps which often take away from a performance in my opinion. I'd be happy to watch someone with very few or no jumps if they skate beautifully to the music and put on a great show.
I had heard of him several times, and was very curious about him. But now I think he has a talent that goes beyond the fate of competitors ( and I am a fan of a group of skaters currently in competition). This guy was born to be an artist. This is simply unbelievable, too good to be real. Thank you for posting. You have gifted me with a true privilege.
My goodness! I could watch skate him for days! What an incredible talented athlete. Sometimes out the ashes rises something unique, beautiful and new. So maybe no jumps, but we don’t know the potential impact of this BEAUTIFUL skater. Out of his own lack (no jumps), he could possibly forge a new path in the skating world. It doesn’t matter what David can’t do, because everything he does do is extraordinary and still better that most well known skaters.
What a wonderful skater ! And yes flowing from one movement into the other ! Beautiful! Why have we not seen him on the world stage? He should be there !
Very, very beautiful balletic dancing. Ballet dancing is hard enough but to do it on ice just as movingly is astonishing. A lovely tribute and many wishes to him.
David's style is so Beautiful and Graceful. His fluidity of movement is incredible!!! I can empathize with him for not being able to realize his dream. I have learned in my life that adapting and finding new ways of seeing a situation helps the healing process greatly! You have to believe that things happen for a reason even if we don't understand it at that moment. He has his own unique style, unlike anyone else. Who says you have to make all kinds of dangerous jumps to be a Beautiful skater like he is? If he can see past his disappointment and skate for the immense Joy he obviously feels it will show in his performances and the audiences will be in total awe of his ability! Many Blessings, Light and Love ⭐💖🙏
BRAVO David! What exquisite aesthetic lines, technical polish, musicality and artistry! For me, enjoying figure skating is NOTabout waiting around for the jumps, but the essence of expression and mood conveyed through movement dynamics, drama and lines... His exceptional achievements in classical ballet training shine through..Truly poetry in motion!
Turn up the sound and watch this dramatic, graceful, talented male skater. David Shapiro this brought tears to my eyes to know you did not skate pass juniors due to an injury. You would have been a Gold Medalist.
David, you are absolutely amazing. Despite your injuries, I feel you could still touch peoples souls like you touched mine watching your videos. Please don’t ever give up and keep trying your amazing and your talent is God blessed. 3:50
So wonderful, so awesome, so beautiful! Thank you so much for your art on the ice! I enjoy your performance, David, thank you again from Canada!
It is so admirable, his passion for skating. Not letting his injuries keep him from doing what he loves, but embracing his limitations and embarking on a different and exciting way to express himself while still skating. It takes courage to continue on as he has. I hope that if put in a similar situation I would have that same courage and determination.
David is poetry in motion. I found him through Dai Takahashi, who discovered him on social media and invited him to perform in his self-produced show Ice Explosion in May this year. He was part of the group number What a wonderful world, including a duet with Dai, and got to perform solo as well. There’s a short rehearsal clip and interview with David on the Ice Explosion ig account (youtube doesn’t let me post the link). I heard many Japanese fans attending the shows fell in love with him. I think up until that point, David was pretty well known in US figure skating circles, but not internationally. It's wonderful of Dai to give such high profile opportunities to lesser known skaters. I hope David receives more overseas show invitations as he absolutely deserves to be seen by as many people as possible.
@@artisticskatingpassion7425 Yes, it's a real shame that only the show in Yokohama with a different cast was filmed in its entirety for tv. The only official film material from Fukuoka is part of the documentary Daisuke Takahashi Last Dance of Age 37, but there’s only very little rehearsal footage of the duet. You can find the documentary on daily motion, if you’re interested.
What a superb and magnificent skater is David. This is TRUE ice skating and BALLET ON ICE. Forget all of those jumps that wreck joints etc. All the very best to you David in your future. I hope you are keeping well and safe. God Bless You Always.
I see someone said that David competes in solo dance for U of Delaware? That's wonderful, as solo dance is becoming more popular and visible. Maybe it has a chance to be added to the Olympics. If not, at least, there are apparently plans to bring solo dance more to the forefront. And as I, and someone else have said in the comments, competing in figure and fancy skating is another option for David, especially because there is no age limit for figure and fancy skating competitive athletes.
There are solo ice dance competitions held by US figure skating, and by a few other federations. These competitions are held separately from Nationals events. Check The Skating Lesson for their interviews with solo ice dance competitors. There is a movement toward starting a World championship for solo ice dance. Getting this discipline to the Olympics is not impossible, but may prove to be more challenging.
I hope that solo dance can one day become an Olympic sport too. The elegant skaters who may not have the ability to jump quads would thrive there while the ex-gymnasts with limited skating skills can continue to be rewarded by the ISU.
This is absolutely lovely. I wish this ballet skating was part of the Olympics. I miss the beauty and graceful moments in skating from the past. I have loved this sport for 70 years. I know it takes a lot to make the big jumps. Sadly I just don't enjoy watching men's figure skating. It lacks so many of the other skills in skating. David, you deserve a gold metal. Thank you for sharing your outstanding talent.

Wow! He could get me interested in watching skating again! I don’t really care about the jumps. Modern skating just seems like routine skating connecting the jumps together. This is art!
World Figure and Fancy Skating Competition is what David would be perfect for. It just finished. But he should look into it for next year. He's the most artistic skater not named "Jason Brown."
I care about this balletic skating much more than how many damn jumps you can do! The skating, here, with all of the analogies, was BREATHTAKING! I would watch skaters like this, even with zero jumps, in a heartbeat ! ❤ ❤ ❤
so so gracious and beauty-full. Ive never seen a more elegant skateman moving on ice. I would say to him that sometimes life has other plans for us and we will be stopped on our path so we can shift into what was truly designed for us. Maybe this adjustment will lead him onto a more rewarding career that his soul wanted to explore through him.
I completely agree! The beauty of skating has been lost to the need for way too may jumps. This kind of artistic talent is so beautiful to watch without having to watch so many painful falls and for what reasons? I truly believe those of us who have loved watching figure skating over the past many years, the skills portion of the competition used to center the first set of scores on a specific set of patterns traced on the ice by the skater’s blades. perfect 10’s would have been given to this God gifted young man! For David, skating for an appreciative audience is where the best reward will be for sure!

Rhythmic is called Artistic gym (plus Acrobatics and Aesthetic). As a ballet dancer, it makes total sense to consider FS, RG and SS as *ART* manifested in a sportive discipline 🧛🏻♀️🖤
He should have a Christmas Special❤
I had heard of him several times, and was very curious about him. But now I think he has a talent that goes beyond the fate of competitors ( and I am a fan of a group of skaters currently in competition). This guy was born to be an artist. This is simply unbelievable, too good to be real. Thank you for posting. You have gifted me with a true privilege.
Thanks for your answer, yes I like competitions too but this skater is something else, a kind of balletic ice dancer, so so beautifull...
He's truly in a class by himself. I will pray for him. Such sensitivity and beauty comes from God alone 🙏🏾
Yes @@tanyadixon3479
One of the most beautiful Ina Bauers I have ever seen.
He retired from compet before starting senior
Such deep, clean edges. Fundamentals that you really don't see anymore.
What a brilliant skater, jumps be damned…
Very, very beautiful balletic dancing. Ballet dancing is hard enough but to do it on ice just as movingly is astonishing. A lovely tribute and many wishes to him.
This artist is in a category of his own❤😊
So beautiful
I agree 100 per 100.
This is why we need Solo Ice Dance discipline
I agree 100%
Turn up the sound and watch this dramatic, graceful, talented male skater. David Shapiro this brought tears to my eyes to know you did not skate pass juniors due to an injury. You would have been a Gold Medalist.
Wow he is so graceful, my heart goes out to him, I hope we get to see more of this amazing young man.
Magnificent!❤
David is a work of art in human form. A gift.
So moving. A beautiful skater and dancer. He deserves recognition fir such an amazing talent
David, you are absolutely amazing. Despite your injuries, I feel you could still touch peoples souls like you touched mine watching your videos. Please don’t ever give up and keep trying your amazing and your talent is God blessed. 3:50
Yes, he is blessed by God, and he will find his way to touch as many souls as possible...
¡Qué belleza! Realmente es ballet sobre hielo. ¡Qué importa si no hace el triple salto! Otros lo hacen y no logran transmitir ni una mínima parte de la belleza y emoción que transmite David. Espero que consiga todo lo que se proponga.
So stunningly graceful. Despite not being able to compete, I hope @davidshapiro has a long and successful career doing what he clearly loves ❤
Меня ошеломило катание Дэвида - это было потрясающе!!! So wonderful, so awesome, so beautiful! Thank you so much for your art on the ice! I enjoy your performance, David, thank you again from Canada!
Beautiful style! No jumps, what a release.
It is so admirable, his passion for skating. Not letting his injuries keep him from doing what he loves, but embracing his limitations and embarking on a different and exciting way to express himself while still skating. It takes courage to continue on as he has. I hope that if put in a similar situation I would have that same courage and determination.
No one skates like Him ❤
He really is unique
I have always wondered what ballet would look like if it were truly fluid. Thank you for showing us such beauty.
OMG He is the most beautiful figure skater I have ever seen. His grace and passion are astounding. He is simply beautiful to watch.
Beautiful skater! And although I understand triples and quads are important competition elements, THIS is what figure skating is about (for me)
Yes, for me too
David is poetry in motion.
I´ve been looking for David performing with Takahashi on social media and I never found anything, what a pity.
Wonderful skater!
His artistry is Amazing, made me cry. A quite Beautiful skater. When the artist makes you feel this deeply, you don’t need the jumps.
Without a doubt, the most beautiful skating from a man I've ever seen. I could watch him all day.
I hope one day there´ll be solo ice dance competitions
There are solo ice dance competitions held by US figure skating, and by a few other federations. These competitions are held separately from Nationals events. Check The Skating Lesson for their interviews with solo ice dance competitors. There is a movement toward starting a World championship for solo ice dance. Getting this discipline to the Olympics is not impossible, but may prove to be more challenging.
I hope that solo dance can one day become an Olympic sport too. The elegant skaters who may not have the ability to jump quads would thrive there while the ex-gymnasts with limited skating skills can continue to be rewarded by the ISU.
What a beautiful skater ❤. Thank you for sharing David's story. Bless you David and best of luck and success in the future
I wish he would go into ice dancing we could see amazing things from him
Absolutely Stunning!!! Bravo!
WOW! This is outstanding! Never seen a talented skater like David! Hope he will have his dream come true! The world deserve to see him perform and he deserve to be seen by the world!
This is some of the most beautiful men's figure skating I have ever seen. Thank you for sharing.
AS a life-long Dancer/Choreographer myself...I've always had a passion for figure skating. This young Artist (!) is beyond stunning. This video is the most exquisite skating I've ever seen...and there were some fabulous male skaters over time...but David is truly unique! I'd like to see him in Ballet class : ) Bet he'a a stunner there too! BRAVO!!!!!
People, this is the real true beauty of figure skating.
What a beautiful skater the edges the lines sheer perfection.
So emotional brought tears to my eyes..
Get rid of the jumps and spins and bring back the Art and Ballet to figure skating.
This is all in this video..loved it thank you..❤❤
He is the virtuoso of ballet on ice....outstanding in every detail. [congratulations on a very fine testimony of his extraordinary talent!]
So graceful and artistic!
David's skating is so beautiful, so stunning. I've never seen anyone like him.
Wow! He could get me interested in watching skating again! I don’t really care about the jumps. Modern skating just seems like routine skating connecting the jumps together. This is art!
Amazing talent. Never seen anything better than this.
Thank you, he is as graceful as etheral truly bringing ballet into figure skating.
Wonderful video - and thank you for highlighting this incredible skater. A fan of figure skating for many years here.
thank you, me too, I´m a huge fan.
He is phenomenal!
He is an amazing skater and so passionate about his sport. Very skilled. Wish him all best in future
So beautiful to watch. Thank you
David, you are a passionate artistic skater. Poetry in motion. ❤
I have never seen anything like this. So fluid and magical! 💛
Bravo !
Continue with your passion!
What a beautifully expressive skater David is...amazing to watch...thank you...❤
His dance is so wonderful to watch. He should be known all over the world.
He is simply wonderful! ❤️
What an extraordinary talent. Its breathtaking.
so so gracious and beauty-full.
He's a true performer. I would love to attend a showcase with him on the ticket.
Love his artistic performance.❤
